Karaoke originated in Japan in the 1970s when Daisuke Inoue created the first karaoke machine after realizing there was a market for an interactive machine that allowed amateur singers to sing popular songs without the main vocals. The original karaoke machine only cost 100 yen to use, about the price of two lunches at the time. Karaoke involves singing along to song recordings while the main vocals are removed. It grew in popularity internationally in the 1990s and has since expanded to formats like cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, video games, cell phones, computers, the internet, and cars. A popular venue for karaoke is a private karaoke box, common in Asia.
