Delta Air Lines, commonly referred to as Delta, is a major American airline headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is one of the world's largest and most well-known airlines, providing both domestic and international flights. Here is some general information about Delta Air Lines:

Strategy Innovation
Yearly, the airline industry makes lucrative, financial decisions as they pertain to collecting profitable assets for the business. As of 1930, more than 30 airlines have exercised the option of merging with another; some have succeeded, some have failed, particularly on a financial aspect. Running a business requires time, money, and of course the knowledge of running a business. Some people start off small; presenting a business in which focuses on a one area at a time. Eventually, that business can expand by globalizing its brand from state-to-state, country-to-country, or wherever their product will sell.
Assessing the situation:
One airline in particular is American Airlines; once known as American Airways, “now American Airlines”, was founded in 1930. With an operating income of more than 300 million dollars, and total revenue of 22 billion, they are the United States number one operating airline. Although final mergers pertaining to complete destination routes, and plane makeovers, American Airlines, and US Airways will create a monstrous foundation to keep the number one spot atop the airline rankings.
Assessing the situation, an unlimited amount of information is available, and discussion amongst the two airlines merging is viewable via the company’s web site, or via an Internet source. As a strategist, assessing any given situation can be tricky; mainly because of the pros and cons presented to the business. American Airlines and US Airways operated under different methods of intelligence. These methods pertain to the airlines focusing on demographics; demographics are quantifiable statistics of a given population. As both airlines initially serviced multiple countries, unwanted problems can arise at any time. These unwanted problems are usually not seen by the innovators because an innovator cannot be everywhere at the same time.
Identifying of the problem and opportunity:
Identifying unwanted situations can only upgrade the opportunities for the airline as a whole. Merging US Airways with American Airlines will bring the fleet size up to more than 800 aircrafts. Some people may take notice of the 800 aircrafts as a positive statement to the business, whereas others who travel for a living may beg to differ; this is mentioned because of air traffic. A fact in which some people may not know is; the owners of an airline company is not guaranteed air slots or space, all proposals must be discussed and brought to the attention the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Conjoining two airlines and clogging the friendly skies with airplanes is sufficiently unsafe. A good aspect and opportunity of the merger is the notion of the airline having what I like to call, “cap space”. In my own definition, cap space will allow the airline to have a certain amount of aircrafts on standby incase of mechanical or passenger overbooked situations.
Creative concept development:

Part I. Two Opening Vignettes
1.) WhatsApp, an instant messaging app for smartphones, allows users to send text messages, documents, images, videos, user location data, and other data over the internet to other WhatsApp users, using standard cellular mobile numbers. In the past, WhatsApp has been a strong defender of its users’ privacy, employing end-to-end encryption for all messages sent through its service and regularly resisting requests from authorities for data access. As a result, WhatsApp has been the instant messaging app of choice for users who wish to keep their conversations private, including individuals working to expose corruption within organizations and those reporting on the activities of totalitarian governments.
Facebook purchased WhatsApp for $22 billion in 2014. After the sale to Facebook was announced, WhatsApp CEO and cofounder Jan Koum declared that nothing would change with the company’s privacy practices. Indeed, Koum posted that ‘If partnering with Facebook meant that we had to change our values, we wouldn’t have done it.’ This statement has come back to haunt him.
In the fall of 2016, WhatsApp announced atht it would begin providing user data—including phone numbers, usage data, and information on devices and operating systems being used---to Facebook and the ‘Facebook family of companies.’ According to the company, this information allows Facebook to make better friend suggestions and display more relevant ads to users while also allowing businesses to send messages to users, including appointment reminders, delivery and shipping notifications, and marketing pitches. The policy shift is intended to help WhatsApp generate more revenue and makes economic sense; however, the change has raised concerns over the privacy of users’ conversations and identities and has upset users drawn to the app by the company’s previous strong stance on privacy.
Is this policy shift by WhatsApp morally justified? Answer yes or no and explain your answer:
2.) Airlines use a variety of information systems to support daily operations such as flight dispatching, flight-path planning (which must take into account multiple facets, including aircraft weight and performance data, en route winds, weather and turbulence forecasts, airspace restrictions, and airport conditions), crew scheduling, passenger check-in, and preflight passenger and baggage weight balancing. Complex software systems also support the airlines’ ground-to-cockpit communications, ticket sales, and frequent-flier program administration. As crucial as all of these systems are to the daily operations of the airlines, however the underlying software is often surprisingly buggy and subject to failure. In the six-month time period from August 2016 to February 2017, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United Continental, and Virgin America, in total, experienced a dozen system failures, r.

Air Travel News
….. More about American Airlines: They filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in
November & recently announced flight changes, including the cancellation of Chicago O’Hare to
New Delhi, India service. The last flight to leave Chicago for India will be Feb 28, 2012, while
the last return flight from India to Chicago will be March 1, 2012. AA & LAN Ecuador have
announced a codeshare agreement, with AA’s code appearing on LAN’s flights from New York
JFK to Guayaquil & on LAN routes from Miami to Guayaquil & to Quito.
….. United has launched a new web site called UnitedHub to keep customers informed about
the latest steps being taken in its merger with Continental. The site includes an FAQ area, along
with updates on the airlines’ frequent flyer programs, news on mobile & digital services for
passengers, updates on aircraft changes & a report on how the company’s main website and the
airport experience will change as the two carriers are brought together. Learn more here.
….. As the AirTran/Southwest merger moves forward, look for changes to service
configurations once the required government operating certificate is issued---estimated to happen
the first quarter of 2012. According to the merger website FAQ’s, there have been no changes to
the Customer Experience so far, but they point out that “Southwest does not assign seats.
AirTran offers assigned seats. Southwest has one class of service and AirTran offers two classes
of seating. Upon full integration, it is our intent to have a consistent product with open seating
and a single class of service.” On the upside, bags will fly free.
….. The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) was effective January 1, and
it’s already impacting fares to/from anywhere within EU countries. What’s ETS? On January 1,
airlines flying EU routes became financially liable for carbon dioxide emissions above capped
allocations specified in the ETS law, in spite of strong objections filed by 43 countries that called
the ETS a breach of international law. Some US airlines; United-Continental, Delta and US

2. Airways have added $3 each-way surcharges on affected flights, without acknowledgement that
the increases are directly related to the ETS ruling. Other industries in the EU have been paying
to combat global climate change for some time. Now that airlines have been added to the mix,
there will be more news about what it all means to business travelers. Watch this space.
….. US Airways has followed its competitors creating first-class cabins for 110 of its regional
aircraft. The regional carriers with a new look are PSA Airlines, Mesa Airlines & Republic.
…..Though the phrase “airline food” generally evokes memories of days gone by, an annual
survey of several North American airlines reveals that what IS offered up there has become
somewhat healthier compared to last year. Using a zero to five scale, airlines rated as follows:
Air Canada and Virgin America, 4 stars; United and Continental, 3 and 1/4 stars; US Airways, 2
and 3/4 stars; American Airlines, 2 and 1/2 stars; Delta, 2 and 1/4 stars…and beyond that….we
suggest you bring your own food.
….. Add this to the annoyance of airline fees: co-pay for an upgrade or reward ticket. The
co-pay scheme is not new, but it is spreading. US Airways, for example is restructuring upgrades
rewards in its Dividend Miles program, and beginning in February, co-pays of $25 to $150 on
domestic flights. They also charge as much as $300 one way as a co-pay on its international
upgrades awards. In another twist, redeem your United miles for a free ticket 21 days or less
before departure, and you’ll pay a “close-in fee” of $75, unless you have elite status. If you want
to share your angst about this creeping trend, join the crowd at FrequentFlier.com
….. In case you haven’t noticed, airlines are stepping up surveillance on the size of that carry-
on you’re taking to the Jetway. When a flight is full & overhead space is at a premium, they’ll
tag it at the gate & put it into the hold with heavier larger bags. Consider packing valuables in a
smaller bag within your carry-on so you can grab it and keep it with you on the flight.
….. If you’re heading to Italy this month, expect strikes in the transportation sector.
Airlines and airport workers have been striking off and on since the first of this month, and
several other strikes will affect the transportation sector during the rest of January. Truck drivers
will be on strike between January 23 and 27, which may result in some shortages in stores. A 24-
hour nationwide strike affecting the aviation sector, trains and ferry services is scheduled to
begin at 9:00 pm local time on Thursday, January 26.
