2. What is Jal Jeevan Mission?
• The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is an initiative launched by the
Government of India aimed at providing safe and adequate
drinking water through individual household tap connections to all
households in rural India by 2024.
• This mission is a critical step towards ensuring water security
• JJM was launched on 15th August 2019 and It comes under the
Ministry of Jal Shakti
7. Objective of Jal Jeevan Mission
• Safe Drinking Water: To provide every rural household with a tap
connection that supplies potable water adhering to quality standards set by
the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
• Sustainability: To create a sustainable system for the management of water
sources, and to recharge and reuse through greywater management,
rainwater harvesting, and other sustainable practices
• Community Engagement: To involve local communities in the planning,
implementation, operation, and maintenance of the systems, thereby
ensuring long-term sustainability and effective management.
9. • Significant progress has been made in the country since the launch of Jal Jeevan
Mission, towards enhancing access to tap water to rural households.
• At the start of Jal Jeevan Mission in August 2019, only 3.23 Crore (16.8%) rural
households were reported to have tap water connections.
• In the media release by JJM on 30.01.2024, more than 10.98 Crore additional rural
households have been provided with tap water connections under JJM. Thus, as on
30.01.2024, out of 19.27 Crore rural households in the country, more than 14.21
Crore (73.76%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes.

10. • The Jal Jeevan Mission represents a holistic approach to solving the
water crisis in rural India.
• It not only focuses on providing access to drinking water but also
ensures the sustainability of water resources, community
engagement, and the use of technology for efficient management.
• Achieving the mission's goals will require concerted efforts from all
stakeholders, including the government, communities, and
individuals.
