IVF or in vitro fertilisation is a set of
numerous procedures to facilitate a
couple to conceive and move ahead
in their parenthood journey. Through
it, couples get rid of or bypass their
fertility issues to conceive a child and
become parents.
IVF Process
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) involves numerous steps
to help a couple in their family expansion plan. The
treatment starts with initial consultation with a
respective doctor. However, the primary and
valuable steps are as follows:
• Ovary stimulation
• Egg retrieval
• Sperm extraction
• Egg fertilisation
• Embryo transfer
• Pregnancy test
Ovary stimulation
This process involves the prescription
and administration of fertility drugs to
stimulate the ovaries of a female for
the production of multiple eggs at a
time. Usually, a female’s ovaries
release one egg in a menstrual cycle.
Ovary stimulation
For ovary stimulation, doctors ask the patients to
take:
• Injectable hormones containing FSH and LH for
multiple egg production
• Medicines containing HCG hormone for egg
maturation after 8-14 days
• Medications to prevent premature ovulation
and prepare the uterine lining for implantation
Egg retrieval
After 34-36 hours of the final
injection or before ovulation, the
doctor retrieves eggs from a
female’s ovaries through the
catheter. Before the process
starts, the doctor will advise you
to take pain killers.
Egg retrieval
Egg retrieval The doctor uses the following
tricks/steps to retrieve eggs:
• Transvaginal ultrasound aspiration
• A fine needle, catheter
• Abdominal ultrasound if the transvaginal
ultrasound does not guide and offer the
requisite help during egg retrieval process
• Egg removal happens within 20 minutes
• Classification of eggs and placement of
mature eggs in a nutritive liquid
Sperm extraction
To move ahead for egg fertilisation, the
doctor needs sperm that you can get
from your male partner. If your male
partner’s sperm is not healthy, the
doctor advises you to opt for a sperm
donor program. For sperm extraction,
the following steps can be taken:
• Masterbation
• Testicular aspiration
Egg fertilisation
After the collection of eggs and sperm,
the doctor will move ahead for the
fertilisation process. To fertilise your
egg with your male partner’s or a
donor’s sperm, the doctor can use two
common methods - conventional
insemination or ICSI (intracytoplasmic
sperm injection).
Egg fertilisation
In certain cases, your doctor may
recommend you for the
following procedures before
transferring the eggs into your
uterus:
• Assisted hatching
• PGT (preimplantation genetic
testing)
Embryo transfer
At the clinic or hospital, the doctor
performs embryo transfer after tw-5 days
of egg retrieval. The embryo transfer
process includes the following steps:
• Administration of sedative
• Insertion of the catheter into your
vagina through the cervix and into the
uterus
• The syringe attached with the catheter
contains fluid and embryo/s
Your doctor will conduct a urine or
blood test to detect the presence of
HCG (human chorionic
gonadotropin) that indicates the
occurrence of a conception. This
pregnancy test is done usually after
two weeks of embryo transfer. The
doctor can advise and conduct
another test if the first one produces
a negative result.
