CAREER HIGHLIGHTS HEALTH PHYSICIS T – NUCLEAR POWER
As a professional health physicist at nuclear power stations:
 Developed a regulatory compliance processes to reduce reliance on tribal knowledge by building complex, methodical
excel spreadsheets based on sampling plant waste streams for isotopic mixture. The spreadsheets calculate various
instrument efficiencies, verify portal monitor alarm set points, calculate internal radiation dose such as Limiting
Internal Dose Condition for both Committed Effective Dose Equivalent (CEDE) and Committed Dose Equivalent
(CDE) using both inhalation and ingestion pathways using Federal Report #11:
 Calculated the detectable Co-60 to non-detectable nuclide dose ratio (Co-60 internal dose multiplied by the non-
detectable dose factor would equal total internal dose from all waste stream nuclides. This simplifies assigning
internal dose based on easily detectable Co-60 and eliminates numerous complexities of whole body counting).
 Verified the radiation protection program assumptions provided positive dose margins for radiation instrumentation
 Verified that hard-to-detect nuclides were <10% of total dose
 Verified DAC airborne posting levels and provided technical basis for adjustments, if necessary to the DAC posting
level or changing the assumed RM-14 frisker efficiency.
 Wrote technical and administrative position papers, performed health physics calculations, wrote applied health physics
procedures for compliance with 10 CFR 20, using NRC, INPO, ANSI, NCRP documents and reports as references.
 Managed the radiation instrument calibration lab, staff performance coaching, evaluated radiation instrumentation
including authoring a beta correction factor paper on the RO-2 ion chamber, PM-7 portal monitors for internal dose at the
alarm set point.

 Performed in-field radiation, airborne and contamination surveys as necessary to analyze and evaluate radiological
workplace hazards against expected scope of work on the RWP/ALARA plan, briefed workers on radiological workplace
hazards and pre-approved RWP/ALARA plan limits, and methods to maintain ALARA. Wrote radiation work permits
(RWPs) from field surveys. Created radiological records as required.
 Took mitigating field actions to maintain radiological safety and control of radiological hazards during job coverage such
as posting areas, source term removal, shielding, area decontamination, radiological containments, worker precautions
(anti-Cs, respirators, etc.) preventing the spread of contamination by observing work in progress, worker coaching, and

EP Software Development-Achieved Exelon corporate technical changes by employing situational leadership including
modifying existing and creating new software processes, attention to detail, and implement changes through training while
overcoming political, technical, budgetary and cultural obstacles to achieve success. Working independently created and met
project milestones and deliverables as follows:
 Took over a failed off-site dose calculation software development project at EP managements’ request without prior
experience in either software development or off-site dose models. Became a self-taught subject matter expert in dose
assessment while learning IT hardware, software, interfaces issues while providing project staff oversight.
 Prioritized and made the following decisions to correct technical issues and keep the project on track.
 Kept the existing standardized MS Access graphical user interface (GUI) forms and calculated reports.
 Authorized the MS Access software code to be rewritten to professional standards and consistent conventions.
 Re-wrote incorrect math functions and operations for release of radioactive material.
 Due to the complexity of math operations, block modularized the math operations into 5 subtotals for ease of error
identification and software validation, created lookup math constants in database tables versus multiple hardcoded
values, saving significant time with final software validation.
 Customized the environmental release pathways to fit each nuclear power plant design IAW plant UFSAR and
Technical Specifications documents.
 Due to budgetary constraints, reduced staff to bare essentials to complete the project.
 Performed software validation testing, user manual documentation, created and taught lesson plans, practical factor sign-
offs, created end user emergency preparedness (EP) training qualifications, developed 60 EP training drill scenarios and
evaluated staff performance for position qualification.
 Overcame cultural barriers with training by identifying past outdated technical basis used in dose assessment and
supported new positions with updated industry and current government technical standards.
 Identified improper change management of key vested nuclear site stakeholders impeding project success to upper

Project Manager/Change Management-Assisted in increasing group performance at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station
during a corporate merger between ComEd and PECO, involving administrative and cultural changes, using situational
leadership by creating and developing new processes as necessary and implementing changes through training. Once new
processes were operational, transitioned authority and responsibility to an administrative assistant. Working independently
created, developed, met project milestones and deliverables to complete the project. Highlights include:
 Self-taught new corporate structure from corporate administrative, governance and oversight documents.
 Created, developed, and taught lesson plans and presentations to teach new corporate structure and departments based on
corporate Governance, Oversight, Support and Performance (GOSP) model to Exelon Mid-Atlantic site workers,
professional staff and managers.
 Collaborated with co-workers about their observations and their performance needs dealing with new corporate structure
and new procedure revision process about to be implemented at Peach Bottom and Mid-Atlantic Region.
 Empowered the workforce to cope with large scale procedure change by a combination of developing new processes and

Accomplishment: Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station was able to participate in procedure development and process 1,000
