Ivan Scobrev was born in Harovsk, Vologda region on February 8th. He began skating at age 12 and was trained by his father. Scobrev studied at a sports school in St. Petersburg and competed for SK "Severstal". In 2010, Scobrev won his first Olympic medal for Russia in speed skating, breaking their medal drought in the sport since 1994. At the 2010 Olympics in Canada, Scobrev's time of 6:18.05 earned him the bronze medal in an event won by Sven Kramer who set an Olympic record.
