WHY DO I NEED TO ENLIVEN ACADEMIC
               MATERIALS?

Ll’s can interact in meaningful practice
 that helps foster language acquisition
 and motivation (Chartrand, 2012)

   Multimedia resources can contribute to
    an increase in students motivation (Woo,
    Herrington, Agostinho, & Reeves, 2007)

 Lots of pre-lesson prep for the teacher

 More teacher intensive outside of the
  classroom

 Limited access to technology for Ss outside
  of classroom

 Ss not doing the work outside of class

Materials: Video. Gooogle Forms.

Delivery: Grammar discovery, informal research
and analyses

Ss read an article and watched a video on content, then used
grammar discovery to construct meaning, create a survey, analyze
information, and write an essay.
SUMMER’S CHOICE

Content: Netiquette

Materials: Video and handouts

Method: Flipped Lesson

 Students watched the video at home and
 answered the questions.
 In class-students worked in groups to prepare
 a top 5 list, then voted on a class top 5.

  • 3. SESSION GOALS • Identify and demonstrate ways to use Web 2.0 to rejuvenate content based academic materials • Empower and equip teachers with resources, examples, and models • Share techniques for blending technology and pedagogy responsibly
  • 4. WHY DO I NEED TO ENLIVEN ACADEMIC MATERIALS? Ll’s can interact in meaningful practice that helps foster language acquisition and motivation (Chartrand, 2012)  Multimedia resources can contribute to an increase in students motivation (Woo, Herrington, Agostinho, & Reeves, 2007)
  • 5. NOW WHAT? Ok, so we know these tools are useful….now what?
  • 6. BENEFITS Engaged learning Constructing meaning in the classroom through activities and tasks Teacher focuses more on individualized attention (group work, tasks, activities)
  • 7. BENEFITS  Ss can engage in collaborative learning  Higher levels of motivation for students  Promotes constructivist theory  Allows for developing critical thinking skills in the classroom
  • 8. DRAWBACKS  Lots of pre-lesson prep for the teacher  More teacher intensive outside of the classroom  Limited access to technology for Ss outside of classroom  Ss not doing the work outside of class
  • 9. WHAT IS WEB 2.0? A simple definition…  Web 2.0 tools are tools that allow users to create, collaborate, and share user- generate materials on-line.

  • 11. KATIE’S CHOICE Content: Teaching/Learning in the 21st Century Materials: Video. Gooogle Forms. Delivery: Grammar discovery, informal research and analyses Ss read an article and watched a video on content, then used grammar discovery to construct meaning, create a survey, analyze information, and write an essay.
  • 12. SUMMER’S CHOICE Content: Netiquette Materials: Video and handouts Method: Flipped Lesson Students watched the video at home and answered the questions. In class-students worked in groups to prepare a top 5 list, then voted on a class top 5.
  • 13. WHAT IS A FLIPPED CLASSROOM?
  • 14. PRACTICE SESSION Think about a lesson that you’ve taught recently. How can you kick it up a notch to make in more engaging AND flow with TESOL Tech Standards. In pairs, use the model to idealize your lesson. We’d like you to leave here with a plan.
