The Item Merge process is being simplified to a single weekly report called the Item Merge Report. Beginning July 10th, this report will be found on Workbench and include pre-populated backroom locations, removing the need for a separate worksheet. It will also show the completion percentage from the previous week. Stores must process the item merges listed on the report to maintain inventory accuracy and avoid potential losses of over $13 million seen in 2011 due to unprocessed merges.

In November 2011, Ellender Memorial Library at Nicholls State University began reclassifying its stack collection from Dewey Decimal to Library of Congress. This presentation examines the intervening years' progress from technological, cataloging, and circulation perspectives, with an emphasis on how those viewpoints changed with personnel and resources. As capacity increased in Technical Services, how did Access Services respond? What preliminary legwork had to be completed? What logistics demanded discussion to preserve patron satisfaction while undergoing this massive project? How was the reclassification originally envisioned; what were unexpected issues? How did the different units respond?
This presentation will address these questions and generate dialogue about how other universities have undertaken this project. Through dissecting our own process, we can receive input as to pitfalls and guidance as we go forward.

Ben Robson completed a summer internship in the Finished Goods department at Virginia Tech where he fulfilled replenishment orders, restocked parts, organized the stockroom, performed cycle counts, and suggested improvements. Some of his projects included labeling shelves to indicate sterile storage areas, labeling bins with lot numbers to reduce picking time, and installing signage to indicate sections in the stockroom. Ben helped shift inventory in the stockroom to grow areas for forward picking and less frequently used parts while shrinking finished goods storage. He also helped implement automatic printing of orders to free up time for other tasks. In his feedback, Ben suggested improvements to tray storage and implementing barcodes on trays for faster cycle counts.

Driven by an immediate pressing need to reduce footprint of physical collections in the library, in fall of 2014 a massive project commenced to prepare approximately one million volumes for transfer to an off-site high-density storage facility. The project was carried out in two large phases that involved coordination of work and schedules between renovation committees, vendors and multiple library teams, including Collections Preparation team that was responsible for ensuring that all items moving off-site had accurate catalog records and were barcoded.
This presentation will provide background information on putting the project together and the criteria used to select items for transfer. It will describe how the work to prepare titles for transfer was organized and completed under a very short deadline. Additionally, this talk will highlight the various challenges and obstacles encountered during the collections preparation process and the associated solutions and workarounds that contributed to its eventual success. Presenters will discuss ongoing catalog maintenance activities that originated after the project’s completion and describe the continuous work that routinely takes place in Serials, Holdings and Discovery Quality unit now that Hesburgh Libraries have an off-site storage facility.
