Isolators are switching devices used to disconnect parts of power systems for maintenance and repair. They are normally operated with no load and have no current breaking or making capacity. Isolators are typically located on the supply side of circuit breakers and automatic switching is preferred. Isolators simultaneously switch all three poles to ensure disconnection and can also be used to isolate equipment, sectionalize and bypass buses, and transfer loads.
