This document summarizes proceedings from a validation workshop held in September 2012 regarding a project to enhance financial services in the Eastern Caribbean through consolidating synergies among indigenous banks. The workshop brought together representatives from indigenous banks in the region to consider options identified in a diagnostic study. Case studies were presented, including on the German Savings Banks Group, seen as particularly relevant due to its decentralized structure and experience consolidating IT systems. Ten recommendations were made regarding areas for potential collaboration between indigenous banks, such as joint risk management, procurement, and developing a shared IT infrastructure and electronic transaction framework.
The document discusses reducing transaction costs associated with trade through facilitating compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements. It outlines how SPS measures can increase transaction costs for producers and consumers if they are not standardized or scientifically justified. The document recommends ways for countries and firms to analyze SPS requirements, comply with trading partners' regulations to minimize trade losses, and pursue long-term solutions like international standards and agreements.
The EPA preserves preferences for agricultural products from Cotonou and provides additional market access for products not previously duty free, like sugar, rice, meat, and fruits/vegetables. Sensitive agricultural products from the EC are protected and subject to liberalization over 10+ years. The EPA allows for safeguard measures, development assistance, and enhanced rules of origin. It acknowledges challenges to CARIFORUM agricultural sectors but allows for appropriate measures if issues arise from implementing the agreement.
Reducing transaction costs associated with sanitary and phytosanitary requirements is important for facilitating agricultural trade. The SPS Agreement aims to reduce non-tariff barriers related to food safety standards. However, complex requirements for risk assessments and private standards add to transaction costs. Trade facilitation through streamlining procedures, infrastructure development, and coordination across agencies can help lower these costs. Actions are needed at the firm, industry association, national and regional levels to address sanitary barriers and better enable countries to trade to their full potential.

Over 600,000 accidents occur each year in the United States due to lane changes, with more than 200 deaths. Drivers often say they did not see the other vehicle, with 60% of accidents caused this way. Rear view mirrors alone are not enough, as they do not allow visibility of vehicles to the right and left sides except when very close. Adjusting side mirrors to a 90 degree angle rather than facing the side of the vehicle increases visibility of blind spots and the road, reducing accidents. Good visibility through proper mirror positioning can help prevent accidents when changing lanes.
