This syllabus outlines an integrated seminar course called "The Monsters We Make" that will explore concepts of monstrosity through literature, film, and art. Students will examine how monsters are created and developed across different works and time periods. The course learning outcomes include developing critical thinking skills, applying disciplinary methodologies, effective communication, and understanding diverse perspectives. Students will read Beowulf, Grendel, and I Am Legend, and complete projects on creative representation, analyzing a monster, a Grendel criminal case study, and a monsterpedia. Class participation, assignments, and major projects will be graded on a points system with letter grades assigned at the end.
