1.
2. “Comfort, oh comfort my people,”
says your God.
“Speak softly and tenderly to Jerusalem,
but also make it very clear
That she has served her sentence,
that her sin is taken care of—forgiven!
She’s been punished enough and more than
enough,
and now it’s over and done with.” Isaiah 40:1-2
3. What brings you comfort in this
season of busyness?
Or how can we pray for you to
receive God’s comfort and peace in
this moment?
4. We celebrate advent to keep that active waiting alive, to
continue to spread the Good News that God has
reconciled Himself with man, that all are welcome to
experience the divine freedom which is found in a
relationship with God. Our sins will be forgiven, we
will be strengthened in times of trial, we will be
comforted in our sadness.
5. What is the best Christmas gift you can give this year?
6. What is the best Christmas gift you can give this year?
You can share the hope that you have found in Christ.
7. A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of
the LORD,
make straight in the desert a highway for
our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level, and
the rough places a plain. Then the glory of
the Lord shall be revealed, and all people
shall see it together, for the mouth of the
Lord has spoken. Isaiah 40:3-5
8. And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
Luke 1:46-55
9. During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,
the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in
the wilderness. He went into all the region around
the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of
the words of the prophet Isaiah,
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth;
and all people shall see the salvation of God.’”
Luke 3:2-6
10. So, back to the question? What is the greatest present
you can give this season?
and all people will see the salvation sent from God…
We have an opportunity to be Christ’s love in other’s
lives. This is a hope that we do not have to wait on, we
can be that hope now.
11. The first step in walking in this truth is to remind yourself
that God is working in our lives today. That God’s glory
conquered death and all sin, and we are free to walk in
the light that is Christ.
12. This can be a
challenging first
step. Take a tip
from
Deuteronomy,
place God’s
hope and love
on your
doorposts. Get
sticky notes and
place hope and
love on the
doorways of all
the rooms in
your house.
13. The next step is speaking God’s hope into the lives of those who
you encounter.
Bless those who God places in front of you. Take time to look
people in the eye, be a reminder that our God is the God who sees,
acknowledge their presence and bless them.
14. A voice said, “Shout!”
I asked, “What should I shout?”
“Shout that people are like the grass.
Their beauty fades as quickly
as the flowers in a field.
The grass withers and the flowers fade
beneath the breath of the LORD.
And so it is with people.
The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands forever.”
O Zion, messenger of good news,
shout from the mountaintops!
Shout it louder, O Jerusalem.[b]
Shout, and do not be afraid.
Tell the towns of Judah,
“Your God is coming!”
Yes, the Sovereign LORD is coming
in power.
He will rule with a powerful arm.
See, he brings his reward with him
as he comes.
He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will carry the lambs in his arms,
holding them close to his heart.
He will gently lead the mother
sheep with their young.
Isaiah 40: 7-11
15. So, who in your life can you speak God’s hope into?
Who is God placing in your heart to speak God’s hope into?
16. Look up into the heavens.
Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
calling each by its name.
Because of his great power and incomparable
strength,
not a single one is missing.
27 O Jacob, how can you say the LORD does not see
your troubles?
O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?
28 Have you never heard?
Have you never understood?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his
understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and
tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
31 But those who trust in the LORD will
find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like
eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40: 25-31
Editor's Notes
This advent season we have been looking into the prophetical writings of the prophet Isaiah, we have been connecting our modern lives with the Israelites who have experienced oppression, exile, disconnection from their identity as God’s chosen people due to their circumstances and their own personal sin.
We understand what it is like to not be in control, and we also understand what it is like to be in a pit that we have dug for ourselves.
We still need the Good News that Isaiah speaks in chapter 40, here the writer reveals that God is ready to reconcile, comfort, and give strength to the weary. We know that He does this, because Isaiah is pointing to our savior Jesus Christ. We are living life on the other side of the first coming, awaiting the second coming. We celebrate advent to keep that active waiting alive, to continue to spread the Good News that God has reconciled Himself with man, that all are welcome to experience the divine freedom which is found in a relationship with God. Our sins will be forgiven, we will be strengthened in times of trial, we will be comforted in our sadness.
Isaiah and Advent are tied together like a perfect present. John, who reveals that the prophesy has come to pass is the same baby that leaps for joy in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when Mary comes to visit while pregnant with Jesus.
Even if we are not in a season of hope in our lives, the Glory of God is greater than our feelings. When we offer ourselves up as Mary did, to be the vessel of God, blessings will fill us up and we can pour them out on others.
Salvation is not just some future experience that we have to look forward to. We can be a part of God’s salvation here on earth right now.
Do we understand that we are made for more than the hope of heaven?
The first step in walking in this truth is to remind yourself that God is working in our lives today. That God’s glory conquered death and all sin, and we are free to walk in the light that is Christ.
So however you feel as you approach an entry way or an exit, you can remember God’s love for you and all those in your home. Even if you do not feel it right then, even if you are not in the mood to accept it right then, say it out loud, and God will speak it back to you when you’re ready to receive it
Bless those who God places in front of you. Take time to look people in the eye, be a reminder that our God is the God who sees, acknowledge their presence and bless them.
Do not hold in the hope of Christ, do not just wait for Christ to come. Speak, shout into the lives of those whom God places in front of you and to whom God places in your heart, and tell them that there is a shepherd who will hold them in their arms, close to His heart. And then embrace them.
