Year 11 GCSEEnglish Reference for Isabella Hucksteppe
I have known Isabella for four years, initially as her form tutor when she first joined the school in
Year 7 and then later on as her English teacher for three years. I have always found Isabella to be a
remarkably intelligent and enigmatic student. She is popular amongst her peers and demonstrates
creativity in all that she does. Isabella emits an infectious good humour and zest for life and seizes
every opportunity that comes her way. She is clearly inspired by sport and is committed to achieving
in these pursuits amongst her other many talents. Isabella is a well-grounded student who has clear
values and a gracious moral perspective. She is kind and generous to other students, often helping
those who are less confident and able than her. Always keen to engage and encourage others,
Isabella's influence in her year group, sports teams and classroom has been most positive.
As a student of English, Isabella has gone from strength to strength. With an inquiring mind and an
ability to read quickly and absorb large amounts of information over a short period oftime, Isabella's
breadth of exposure to Literature is wide. She always takes on extension tasks such as wider reading
- for example of other nineteenth century writers, such as Jane Austen and has done so every year I
have taught her. Once again, her inquiring mind, ability to empathise with other cultures and
traditions and sheer enthusiasm to absorb as much knowledge as she can, drives her to pursue a
healthy reading scope.
As a result of being so well-read, Isabella's vocabulary is highly sophisticated. Whilst she has worked
hard on the structure of her essays, arguments and conscious crafting of sentences and language
devices, Isabella's final piece of coursework on 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' was
awarded full marks. The coursework criteria demanded a critical appreciation of social and historical
context as well as a thorough understanding ofthe Gothic genre.
I would highly recommend that Isabella enrols on the Highest Level of academia available to her. She
responds well to intellectual challenge and will, I am certain, gain an excellent set of final results. I
am sure that Isabella's university career will be prosperous and I wish her all the very best of luck in
whatever course she chooses to follow. Her positive energy and vivacity will be missed by teachers
and students alike here at Tanglin.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information for Isabella.
Yours sincerely,
~
