Close Quarter Battle - A (Thankfully) Changing ParadigmCQB TEAM
Ever thought all those courses you took in Close Quarter Battle just got you hurt? They didn't quite make sense? Buttonhook and hope? Here's a better way.

The Sniper Team at Xero is a small group of 5 developers and 1 part-time designer that works to quickly fix bugs, add small features, and investigate and resolve customer problems. Formed 3 years ago, the team handles tickets from other departments about issues customers and partners experience, as well as issues identified internally. They prioritize work, develop fixes, and work with QA to release changes. Common ticket types include reconciliation errors, missing journals, timeouts, and problems with deleted data.
The document proposes using modified M113A4 armored vehicles to vertically transport infantry squads over rubble and debris in urban areas. It notes the vehicles provide combat-proven mobility with applique armor protection and a boom arm to deliver troops to unexpected locations on buildings. The document advocates for this approach to overcome predictable top-down or bottom-up urban assault tactics that expose infantry to enemy fire. It suggests using smoke and situational awareness to mask vertical assaults from the enemy.
Urban operations involve combat conducted in towns and cities, where the complexity of terrain from buildings can limit fields of view and fire while providing enhanced cover for defenders, and below ground infrastructure and placements of booby traps and snipers become easier due to the urban environment.
The document summarizes the results of an extreme dust test of various 5.56mm carbine designs, including the M4, XM8, HK416, and MK16. The test subjected weapons to severe dust conditions and minimal maintenance over 6,000 rounds each to evaluate reliability. All weapons performed well, with failure rates below 1% of total rounds fired. However, all weapons exhibited significant wear and exceeded their headspace limit, becoming unsafe to fire. While the test provides insight, it subjected weapons to extreme conditions not representative of typical operational use and its results may not be repeatable. The data could inform potential future requirements but does not evaluate other performance aspects.
This document provides a critique of common arguments made regarding close quarters battle techniques. It examines phrases such as "there's more than one way to do it," "there is no right way," "never," "always," and "it works." For each phrase, the document explains why the argument is problematic or incomplete. It argues that while there may be flexibility and no absolute right answers, some techniques are better than others based on factors like survivability, speed, and effectiveness against different threats. The document advocates for thinking critically about techniques rather than relying on dogmatic or generalized claims.
The summary provides the key details of the short story "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty in 3 sentences:
An IRA sniper posts himself on a rooftop in Dublin during the Irish Civil War and kills an enemy turret gunner and an old woman, but is then shot in the arm by an opposing sniper across the way. Using a plan to trick the other sniper, he fakes his death and shoots his enemy when he lets his guard down, only to discover that the other sniper was actually his brother.
The 300 AAC Blackout Low Visibility CarbineHassan Sakha
The document describes a low visibility carbine that uses 300 AAC Blackout ammunition. It was designed as a replacement for submachine guns like the MP5 and MP7 that offers greater range of up to 300 meters while maintaining similar sound suppression abilities. The 300 Blackout was chosen over other cartridges like 7.62x39mm because it maintains full magazine capacity in AR magazines and has a wide selection of bullet options that allow it to function reliably with both subsonic and supersonic ammunition without an adjustable gas system. Prototypes of the low visibility carbine have proven accurate and competitive in shooting competitions while offering ballistic performance superior to an MP5 or MP7 out to 100 meters.

The document provides guidance on close quarters combat (CQC) techniques for military units operating in urban environments. It discusses organizing soldiers into fire teams of 2-4 individuals and clearing buildings in a systematic manner by first moving tactically outside and entering buildings quickly. Key elements of CQC addressed include controlling weapons, clearing hallways, intersections, stairwells, and rooms while maintaining overlapping fields of fire and sectors of responsibility. The document emphasizes speed, violence of action, and surprise to gain control of rooms and eliminate threats during clearing operations.
The document provides information on the 710th ASMC training plan concept and references for small arms training. It details the training that will be conducted on the M16/M4 rifle and M9 pistol, including classroom instruction, hands-on tasks, and live-fire ranges. The training will cover weapon components, maintenance, firing fundamentals, and qualification with assigned weapons.
The document discusses the operational requirements and missions of a Brigade Combat Team (BCT) that can operate effectively in the 21st century environment. A BCT must be able to rapidly deploy by air, conduct lethal combat or stability operations immediately upon arrival, and win initial engagements with minimal casualties. It also needs tactical mobility, sustainment capabilities, and protection against artillery and small arms. The document explores how a medium-weight BCT could fulfill these needs.

The USMC has used snipers since its formation, though the role has evolved over time. This document profiles several famous Marine Corps snipers, including Carlos Hathcock, considered the most successful sniper in history. Hathcock had over 93 confirmed kills during two tours in Vietnam between 1967-1969. He was known for feats like shooting an enemy sniper through his scope at long range. Marine snipers undergo extensive training to develop precision shooting skills and are critical assets in combat operations.
Getting in the habit of locating your target (the rim) earlier will improve your shooting percentage. Why? Locating the rim just a split second earlier gives your brain more time to subconsciously calculate distance and focus on your objective. Your eyes should be on the rim as early as possible. To make this little trick work, you need to develop this habit in practice, which carries over into games.
This document provides 19 tips to improve basketball shooting skills and effective ball handling techniques. It begins by outlining tips for improving one's shot, such as locating the rim earlier, holding the follow through, and using a return device or shot machine to practice. It then discusses effective ball handling and provides links to products to aid practice. The document encourages repetition and practicing game-like movements to improve skills. It closes by emphasizing that dedication to principles can make one an unstoppable player.

1) The article discusses different techniques for leading a moving target when shooting, including the CPSA Method, Swing Through, Churchill Method, Maintained Lead, and Interception.
2) It emphasizes the importance of focusing solely on the target and not shifting one's focus between the target and the gun barrels. Maintaining concentration on the target allows for a smooth, controlled swing of the gun.
3) Different techniques suit different shooters and situations. While several techniques are discussed, the author recommends starting with and building upon the CPSA Method. Consistency is key and comes from practicing a single, refined technique.
The document provides tips for improving one's mental game and managing emotions in golf. It discusses the importance of developing solid pre-shot and post-shot routines to focus on the target and minimize reactions. Specific tips include rehearsing the intended swing, holding one's finish without reacting to the result, understanding what went wrong after a poor shot, considering risk versus reward on difficult shots, and developing a pre-round routine to warm up and focus the mind. Bouncing back from a bad hole is key, and the article provides strategies for shifting focus to the next shot and relaxing tension.
The document provides instruction on the fundamental skills and drills in volleyball. It identifies the six fundamental skills as serving, passing, setting, hitting, digging, and blocking. The purpose is to introduce students to the basic skills and have them develop proficiency through active participation and practice.
One of the most common mistakes amateurs make is improper alignment. Some think they should align their feet at the target, others try to get their shoulders parallel to it. Hey, some golfers try to align everything at the target! They're all wrong. by Jerry P Sager
The document discusses the importance of proper gun mounting technique for clay shooting. It states that a correct gun mount is the foundation for good shooting skills. It provides detailed instructions for how to practice the gun mount, emphasizing using both arms simultaneously to bring the gun smoothly to the eye before settling it on the shoulder. With regular practice of 2,500 repetitions, the gun mount can become an automatic muscle memory movement. Only through perfect practice of basic techniques like the gun mount can a shooter achieve consistency and reach their full potential.

The document also suggests exercises to help judges improve their reaction time and ability to count reps quickly and accurately.
The document provides several tips for improving golf skills:
1) Focus on proper stance, which is important for accurate hits but varies between individuals - finding the right stance can greatly improve your game.
2) Use your whole body for swings rather than just arms for more power.
3) Wiggling toes can help assess if your stance provides good posture.
4) For long putts, aim at a target beside the hole rather than the hole itself to avoid over- or undershooting.
The document provides tips and strategies for playing the video game Far Cry 3. It discusses that the game involves rescuing friends from pirates on a stranded island, with optional adventurous and dangerous side missions. It notes there are stealth and direct combat approaches to missions. The document then states it will provide tips to help amateur gamers avoid mistakes, such as using stealth tactics like releasing caged animals or sniping enemies from a distance.
This document discusses the importance of proper gun fit and eye dominance for shooting. It outlines several key points:
1) Eye dominance can change over time and should be checked regularly, as shooting with the non-dominant eye can cause missed shots. The author provides a simple test to determine eye dominance.
2) Having a dominant eye that is opposite one's shooting hand requires closing that eye during the mounting process to ensure proper aim. Solutions like eye patches are recommended.
3) Proper gun fit, including correct stock length, comb height, and cast is crucial for accurate shooting but adjusting one dimension affects the others. Stock length especially impacts eye placement, comfort, and ability to swing smoothly.
Proper body positioning is key to avoiding mistakes in hockey. Players should never turn their back to the play and should position themselves to see both the puck and their defensive assignment. When breaking out of the defensive zone, players should scan the ice to assess their options of skating the puck out themselves, passing to the center, or passing back to the defenseman. The blue lines are areas where the game can quickly transition from offense to defense, so players should avoid high-risk plays like blind backward passes or unnecessary dekes when crossing the blue line.

The document provides tennis tactics for singles play. It discusses the importance of being the offensive player by hitting the ball early from inside the baseline. It also emphasizes knowing your opponent's weaknesses and strengths, being mentally prepared to win, using surprise tactics like feigning one shot direction and hitting another, being aggressive on an opponent's second serve, adjusting your game plan based on your opponent's strengths and weaknesses, countering an opponent's topspin with backspin or taking the ball early, and effectively executing drop shots. It cautions against getting impatient with defensive players or playing against yourself instead of your opponent.
This document discusses coaching science versus myths and conventional wisdom in baseball coaching. It highlights how the human eye can only see 32 frames per second, while critical pitching movements occur much faster, and how technology now allows us to better analyze pitching mechanics. It also discusses establishing standards and routines for pitchers to focus on the present moment and stay mentally tough, such as focusing on things they can control, committing to a pitch plan before each throw, and trusting their abilities.

Covey says most people look for quick fixes. They see a big success and want to know how he did it, believing (and hoping) they can do the same following a quick bullet list.
But real change, the author says, comes not from the outside in, but from the inside out. And the most fundamental way of changing yourself is through a paradigm shift.
That paradigm shift is a new way of looking at the world. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People presents an approach to effectiveness based on character and principles.
The first three habits indeed deal with yourself because it all starts with you. The first three habits move you from dependence from the world to the independence of making your own world.
Habits 4, 5 and 6 are about people and relationships. The will move you from independence to interdependence. Such, cooperating to achieve more than you could have by yourself.
The last habit, habit number 7, focuses on continuous growth and improvement.

2. Note from Eric: I found this guide as means of helping our team train for a CQB environment. This is a popular guide found online for CQC airsoft situations that we can use to our advantage. I recommend you all read, I can guarantee it will it LEAST be required reading for my squad.
3. Introduction Ah, CQB, nothing but shooting, screaming, and seeing how other people react when put in a room where they engage opponents at close range. Think you can take it? Let's see.As a former paintball player, CQB takes me back to tournaments and games gone by. Nothing is sweeter than getting that angle on your opponent and drilling him with a stream of BBs.But it isn't all glory. Learning how to succeed in CQB takes time and a lot of effort on the player's part. This can take months, maybe years. But lucky for you I'm here to offer advice. ;) This is Part One of a two part series about CQB, written by me, Irishman. Part One will give some good basic tactics for beginners and Part Two will contain tactics for more experienced players.
4. Now, let’s get started… Let's start with what you know about CQB, shall we? As we all know CQB stands for CloseQuartersBattle. When someone mentions the word, images of SWAT teams or military Special Forces repelling down buildings and throwing flashbangs come to mind. Movies like Navy SEALs and video games such as Rainbow Six also appear in your head. But airsoft CQB is another thing entirely. For the most part, airsoft players are not professionals and many have never served in the military. Airsoft is a simulation of battle and few players know much about military tactics. Airsoft players who play CQB are out to have a fun time. While having fun is the most important thing, winning is another. Many players are content just playing on weekends to lay off some steam. Both their are other players that play to win. This guide is for the latter.
5. Common Problems Many airsoft players who decide to play CQB for the first time often make at least one of three mistakes. Mistakes like:Tunnel Vision That is focusing one one single target and allowing opponents to flank you or move when your aren't looking.Poor Communication. If you don't work with players on your team you might walk right into another player, make codes to signal when to move and where. And three, Poor Individual CQB Skill. When I say Poor Individual Skill I don't mean that the player is bad, just that they are inexperienced and making mistakes that should be avoided.I hope that this guide will help you become a better airsoft player and limit your mistakes. This guide will not make you a perfect player, nothing will. We will still make mistakes. Believe it or not, I do to (ie: running into an M203.).But I will help you.
6. SECTION ONE: Tunnel Vision Now I'll adress the first mistake new players to CQB make, Tunnel Vision. What is Tunnel Vision you ask? As I explained above, tunnel vision is spending too much time focusing on one particualar player, this would cause you to ignore other players and give them an advantage.A big mistake indeed.
7. Here's a scenario. You are sitting in your bunker and see another player in a bunker across the field. You begin shooting at him. While you are focused on this player you don't notice the other opponent moving on your position. As you move out of cover for another shot you are hit by another player you didn't notice. How can this be prevented?Pay attention to your surroundings. After shooting at an opponent for the first time, poke outside your bunker and scan the field for other threats you didn't notice. Now think.Do you need backup on eliminating this player or can you do this yourself? Before you concentrate on taking out the opponent, call for a teammate to watch your blind spots, that is angles and in front of your bunker, places you couldn't see.
8. Next comes a series of procedures.Shooting your weapon isn't the only thing you can do to help eliminate the player. After you shoot, ask your teammate how he is doing. Is he running low on BBs? Is he waiting to move? Is he pinned down? Help him out if he needs it.Always pay attention to the status of your team.If your teammate doesn't appear to be doing anything at the moment ask him if you are clear to move to a new bunker to get a better view of your opponent. If he says your clear, have him pin down the enemy player so he doesn't see your movement and sprint to another bunker.
9. When you run, make sure you are in a low position, keep a low profile to make sure you aren't hit by another threat you didn't see before. Think before you move.Another important thing when your run, keep your eyes open and scanning for enemies. You may see some players you didn't see before when your moving. Don't be so focused on making it to that bunker that you don't notice the opponent behind it!Once you arrive at your bunker, signal to your teammate that you made it in okay and are looking for new targets. Now look around the sides of your bunker on that player you were shooting at earlier. In your new position, you have a good shot on the player. Take a deep breath, line up your shot, and nail him. After you've taken him out look around for other players. Check your ammunition, still have enough BBs? Be sure to pay attention to whats going on when you move, don't run into an ambush!Still alive? Good. This brings me to my next point.
10. SECTION TWO: Teamwork and Communication Team Work and Communication might be the two most important skills in airsoft, both in CQB and Woods Play. You simply can't win without it.Very few players can manage to win games without working with players on their team. Don't be one of those players. Help your team, don't play for yourself. Now that I got that out of the way, I'll bring up an important issue that applies to any team.
11. Codes Any team that wants to win NEEDS codes. If you are playing and scream out "I'M OUT OF GAS, DOES ANYBODY HAVE SOME?!" this might create problems. In the heat of battle, words are distorted and long sentences may be misinterpreted. Or if your really unlucky a player on another team might hear you and prepare to make his move.Instead of yelling out a long phrase wouldn't it be a lot easier to just use a code word? It would wouldn't it?When making codes, be imaginative, use any theme from Disney, Animals, Movies, to Fast Food. Make sure that they aren't easily recognized, you don't need them to be identified by the enemy!
12. Radios You might want to invest in radios. If you do decide to use radios, I would recommend only a few players having them. Although many teams don't believe in ranks it might be a good idea to designate a few players as radio operators. This would prevent clutter and confusion on the airwaves. After you have established an effective way of communication, move on to team tactics.I don't have much advice for how to work as a team, this is something that takes time. Only through experience and practice can a team learn to work together. Practice as often as you can.Get to know the people on your team and note how they play. Tell them areas where they can make improvement. Be polite and never disrespect another player.
13. Move as a team, don't try and do things by yourself.Another important piece of victory in CQB fields is good individual skill.
14. SECTION THREE: Tips to improve your CQB game To be a good player on a small field, you need to spend a lot of time on the field. It takes time to learn tactics that work for you but I'll tell you some tactics that work for me.In paintball, one of the most important skills was the ability to snap shoot. That is quickly exposing yourself from your bunker and taking a few quick shots. This technique can allow you to keep the guy shooting at you down and give you an advantage. For example, if you are being pinned down by an AEG you don't have to sit there and pray he finds a new target, do something about it.
15. Make a mental picture of where this player is.Listen to where his shots are coming from, if you can, lay prone on your stomach and peer out the bottom corner of your cover. See him?Once you get a good idea where the guy is roll out and fire, this should take less than a second. It will catch your opponent off guard and give you an advantage. An important thing in snap shooting is to never establish a routine, meaning don't pop out of the right side of the bunker every time. After shooting out of the right side with your right hand, switch to your left hand and shoot out of the left side.
16. Learning how to shoot with both hands is a critical skill for individual success.Different people have different methods of snap shooting. One of my favorite techniques while pinned down is to sit on my knees and make as small of a target I can. To snap shoot, I use my upper body to quickly come out of cover and fire, then move back in before they have a chance to fire back.
17. Make sure you have a snapshooting technique that works for you.Remember, always be unpredictable!
18. Be sure to always shoot around the sides of your bunker, don't show more of yourself than needed.A mistake I often see and cringe at is when a new player shoots over the top of his bunker and is taken out easily. Most of the time, shooting over the top of your cover isn't a good idea as you expose more of yourself than you need. While shooting, you want to keep as small of a profile as possible.Be sure to always shoot around the SIDES, of your bunker, don't give the other player an open shot when you come over the top!
19. Above all, be smart when you play.If you practice the techniques I give you, you will find success in the CQB arena. Don't limit yourself to reading one article on tactics.Use Google whenever you can, it's your friend. Check out other forums for articles about airsoft tactics and write some if you have the time.Remember, the most important part of CQB and airsoft in general is having fun. If the game ever loses that important aspect winning will no longer become important. Don't burn yourself out, play to win, but more importantly, play to have fun.I hope this helps,Irishman.
