Iran is a predominantly Persian country with a Shiite Muslim theocracy. Tehran is the capital and Qom is the religious capital, home to important seminaries. Most Iranians are Persian, with Azeri and Kurdish minorities. Islam is the official religion, led by a Supreme Leader and president. Iran's economy relies heavily on oil exports, and other key exports include pistachios, carpets, and fruits. Iran has a long imperial history and was ruled by the Pahlavi dynasty until the 1979 Islamic Revolution established the current theocratic government led by Ayatollah Khomeini.
