2018 CELEBRATION EDITION
3
PrefaceOn the cover:
W
ith great pride we present to you the 2018 edition of our annual
magazine, which has been restyled. It has a new look and feel, because we
will celebrate our 30th anniversary.
An anniversary calls for some retrospect. We do this together with our founders,
Leo Oostendorp and Theo Wanders, who met in the Dredging Museum at an interview.
Last summer, many of our iPS staff met at our headquarters. The objective of the meeting
was to network and share knowledge, but of course there was also time for fun. This is
shown on the cover of this edition!
The mission, vision and services of iPS are described in this magazine. We also provide an
overview of the various market segments in which we operate worldwide.
We highlight some of the projects we are proud of and give our clients, staff and project
managers the opportunity to share their experiences.
Our core business is recruitment and cross-border payrolling. In several articles of this
magazine you will read that we’re good at what we do.The positions we mediate are of a
very diverse nature. One of our consultants tells us how the mediation process works.
Crossing borders:At iPS we know all about it.How does it feel to work in a foreign
country for a long time? What do you miss and what can“be missed like a toothache”,
as we say in the Netherlands? Four of our stars abroad tell their story.
Quality development, compliance and privacy are paramount to iPS.Our staff members
know everything about these. They tell us about how they manage them from
day to day.
During a walk through the port of Rotterdam on a sunny, windy day we discussed how
we as a Directors team manage iPS and what we think is important in this regard.
This, and much more, can be read and viewed in this magazine. The idea behind this:
‘Together we make iPS!’ That’s why we would like to thank all our clients again this
year for their confidence, and our employees and suppliers for their commitment and
dedication during 2017.
We wish you pleasant reading.
iPS Directors,
Rob Kooijmans and Hans van Burk
In this anniversary magazine we
want to take a moment to present
the Powerful People of iPS to you. On
the cover you will find some of our
international staff, who came together
last summer to meet and share
knowledge. Of course, there was also
time for fun, which shows on the cover
of this special edition!

The market
Thirty years ago,iPS became known especially
for permanent staffing services for ships.Soon
afterwards,iPS became a major player in the
maritime world. There are still clients who see
iPS as a crewing specialist for dredgers.
Fact is that we are now also filling permanent
management positions for companies in va-
rious segments.
In recent years, the market has changed
enormously due to increasing digitisation,
specialised technology and the development
of a knowledge-based economy.The market in
which iPS operates is growing rapidly, leading
to an increasing need for specialised and highly
trained personnel. For example,iPS is active in
the niche market of tunnelling, having a large
pool of specialists and with knowledge of
unique solutions.
iPS has grown into a company that offers full
peace of mind to clients in the field of recruit-
ment and specialises in cross-border payrolling:
providing the best people around the world
under the most favourable conditions for both
clients and candidates. This process is facilita-
ted with offices all over the world. It’s precisely
because of our flexibility, speed and our large
network that we are able to meet these custo-
mer needs in an effective way.
Wherever we operate we highly value good
relationships with both candidates and clients,
in a humane, transparent and professional man-
ner.Our motto is:an agreement is an agree-
ment, say what you do and do what you say.
The candidates
We mediate positions at every level of a
company or project, from blue collar to
white collar. We think it is very
important that the candidate
feels that he or she is not employed ‘through
iPS’, but rather ‘by iPS’. Candidates are willing to
commit themselves to us because iPS actively
anticipates career perspectives and takes the
needs of candidates into consideration.
In addition, our payroll candidates are always
paid on time, regardless of whether or not a
customer pays on time. In doing so, we create
a privileged relationship with our candidates.
iPS Academy
It’s our candidates who play a major part in iPS’
success.We therefore attach great importance
to developing knowledge,skills and talent.
This is nice for the candidate, but especially
interesting for our clients. With our personal
approach,we constantly assess the needs of
the candidates so we can offer the right
training courses and challenging
positions.
iPS - POWERFUL PEOPLE
The iPS consultants are always keen on delivering the
best professionals. You can find our‘Powerful People’all
over the world, operating on projects in over 50 coun-
tries. We understand the demands of our clients and we
care about the needs of our candidates. With our vast
pool of international candidates, worldwide connec-
tions and in-depth knowledge of the industries, we are
committed to facilitate the perfect match for both client
and candidate.

‘When I first joined Sapura

Electrical Foreman position
for one trip only, but based
on my knowledge, experi-
ence and development I was
promoted to become an ETO
(Electro Technical Officer) and finally I became
a Sr. ETO. The job was a challenge because we
were different nationalities working together.
This makes things a bit complicated at times
due to issues with language barriers and dif-
ferent way of doing things. But once we got to
know each other we became a very strong team
capable of handling any task given to us.
I found lots of challenges throughout this
project as we needed to be on top of things to
avoid downtimes due to equipment failures.
We often received several calls during our shift,
especially during projects to fix breakdowns
and to avoid them, in order to maintain the ves-
sel properly and meet the planned production
times. I did enjoy the rush of having to trouble-
shoot equipment and was very pleased with the
outcome of our team efforts.’

Guido works in a region where a lot will happen in the
coming years.After 80 years,the state-owned Pemex
monopoly has come to an end,and oil and gas fields have
been released in turns since 2014.Currently there are
66 new operators that have bought units. However, the
infrastructure will also be required, which will offer great
opportunities for iPS.Expectations are that 200,000 new
jobs will be created in the next 10 years.Guido: ‘We are
working hard to prepare ourselves for the future.’
Guido is proud of his team of twenty staff members: ‘We
are doing very well. Our turnover has doubled in four
years, and more and more projects coming in.The way
we approached the Sapura Energy project is a textbook
example for us.The client, the client’s client as well as the
staff who worked for us are satisfied. We have been able
to maintain 120 families for six months. That’s great, isn’t
it?’
It was a mammoth task providing staff for the
Malaysian company Sapura Energy. From his
office in Mexico, Guido van der Zwet, Manager
Americas at iPS, talks with pride about a
successful partnership.
At an onboard station, the 18-kilometre long pipeline was
welded and subsequently lowered to 300 metres below
sea level. The job took six months to complete.
Guido: ‘For a job like this we recruit staff,we conduct the
interviews and we check their credentials. Many of the
staff had previously worked for us which saved us time.
Before boarding they are subjected to a practical exam,to
ensure we provide the client with qualified personnel. We
then provide‘door-to-door’service:we pick up the staff,
arrange a hotel for them in the city where they will stay
and we arrange their transport to the port. From there, the
client takes over.We changed 40 crews simultaneously.
You need to think and act fast.We worked very closely
with our offices in Mexico City,Ciudad del Carmen and
the Middle East. The office in the Middle East took care of
all contracts.’
As a Dutch company in Mexico it is unusual to work with
a ship sailing under the flag of Panama for a Malaysian
client.Guido: ‘Panama is affiliated with the Maritime La-
bour Convention (MLC),a treaty that stipulates the quality

Guido: ‘The ship has left the port, the job has been com-

The Sapura Energy 3500 was used to lay an offshore pipe-
line between a production platform and an oil extraction

Joost van Aardenne works for BP
in Mexico as Retail Asset Manage-
ment Director. As a result of the
opening up of the fuels market,
his task, clearly put, is to develop
a retail network strategy for BP in
Mexico and to lead its implemen-
tation.
Joost:‘Our goal
is to achieve a
nationwide net-
work of approx-
imately 1,500
service stations
in 5 years time
and to achieve
a market share of more than 15%.
To achieve this, we are opening ten
petrol stations a week. We perma-
nently employ between 100 and 120
people to negotiate contracts with
owners and dealers and to change
petrol stations from the Pemex
brand to BP. We also explore the
construction of new service stations
in good locations.
We have been warmly welcomed
by Mexican clients. Why? BP is the
first international oil company to
open a service station in more than
80 years. This has generated a huge
amount of positive publicity. In addi-
tion to the BP brand, the determin-
ing factors are the prime locations of
the stations, the service, delivering
the right amount of purchased fuel
as well as the quality of the fuel. We
are also helping to protect our
clients engines. Our fuel scientists
have come up with a new and
unique gasoline for Mexico – that
you can only buy at our stations.
BP gasoline with ACTIVE tech-
nology protects the engine from
building-up of harmful deposits.
We have an active presence in
social media, and get lots of great
feedback on the performance of
our product and on the fact that we
give complete litres.’
iPS has found and appointed the
first Project Management Officer
for BP. This is a key role for provid-
ing support to the rapid growth
plans for the Retail business and
to manage it in a process-oriented
manner. Joost: ‘Perhaps more staff
will be recruited in the future, such
as project engineers, architects and
contract negotiators. In addition
to retail, BP is also active in other
areas in Mexico. The“Upstream”
division, for example, was awarded
two deepwater exploration blocks.
We sell Castrol lubricants and we are
active in the supply of aviation fuels
to our clients at the most important
Mexican airports.’
Doing business in Mexico is special,
says Joost.‘It’s great to work in a
country with such a rich history
and culture. The liberalisation of
the market offers a huge amount of
energy and business opportunities.
Is it a thrill to participate in this pro-
ject? Absolutely! We sometimes say
to each other here: we are making
history. Currently, there is no other
country where BP is growing as fast
as in Mexico. For BP, the current de-
velopment in Mexico serves an ex-
emplary role, which we also want to
realize in the future in other growth
markets such as China, Indonesia
and India.’

In Mexico, iPS has entered into a partnership
with British Petroleum (BP). Whereas until
recently all petrol stations were owned by the
Mexican state-owned company Pemex, more
and more foreign companies are taking over the
petrol stations, including BP.
which is the contact between the petrol stations being
converted and BP’s management team. The project is a
great success.
Guido van der Zwet, Manager Americas: ‘BP is the first
company besides the state-owned company to open a
petrol station. It was exciting to see how the Mexicans
would react to this foreign company, but the petrol sta-
tion in Mexico City has more than doubled its revenue.
Because of this, it even has one of the largest sales per
pump in the world.
The Mexicans are happy for several reasons. The sale
of petrol is transparent: you get what you pay for.The
service is important: there is a shop, your windows
are washed and the tyre pressure is checked. There is
always a line of twenty cars, non-stop, 24 hours a day.
We provided BP the first PMO (Project Manager Officer),
the person who internally coordinates the rebuilding
of the stations. Christopher Elizelde, senior recruiter iPS
and contact person for the management of BP, mediat-
ed this PMO.The complex issue was that the position
Joost van Aardenne, Retail Asset Management Director of BP

did not yet exist. In this case, it was mainly a matter of
knowing exactly what the client needed and looking
for the right person in comparable industries. Eventual-
ly Christopher quickly found the right person, with the
right experience. The expectation is that we will recruit
and mediate more of these PMOs.
For BP and others, we are a company that knows well
how to operate in Mexico; we have knowledge of the
industry. We are the experts, we give advice and share
our knowledge. When these companies are successful,
they often also need staff. That is a win-win situation.
BP’s plans are ambitious, yet the market is big enough.
In Mexico City alone, there are 8 million cars. The coun-
try is 47 times larger than the Netherlands. There is
almost no rail traffic, all transportation is done by car or
truck. By January 1, 2018, petrol prices will be released
and by 2019 anyone will be allowed to import petrol.
We are proud of our first collaboration with BP, and of
course we hope that we can also help them with other
projects and that this will lead to more business.’
A beautiful picture of a newly built BP gas station.
The plans are ambitious: BP recently opened its first
petrol station, and in the next five years another 1500
petrol stations will be opened in Mexico. BP’s aim is not
so much to open new stations as to rebrand existing
ones.

Port Said
The TBM is over 13.5 m in ø and
weighs over 1,000 tonnes and
has a length of 180 m.
Bore ø of tunnels: 13.05 m
Internal ø: 11.40 m
Road tunnels: 2,800 m each
Length of project: March 2016
till March 2018
Total workers: Up to 4,500
Material: two Slurry System
TBMs, each with a cutter head
power of 3,500 kW.
The purpose of the tunnels is to allow greater transit
capacity between the highly populated districts of the
Nile Delta to the Sinai Peninsula. At present traffic flow is
restricted:many people have to use the system of ferries
that operate out of Port Said.
Stephan: ‘From a technical standpoint, the tunnels will
each be 2.8 km long with an internal diameter of 11.40
metres allowing for two lanes of traffic per tunnel. They
will be excavated using two Slurry System TBMs,each
with a cutter head power of 3,500 kW.This type of TBM
transports spoil to the surface in a bentonite solution
through pipes attached to the TBM by a telescopic pipe
system. On reaching the surface all the bentonite slurry
is run through a separation plant to extract the spoil,
thereby making the bentonite solution reusable, reducing
wastage and helping the environment.
The tunnel is lined with concrete segments each weigh-
ing close to 13 tons, which are assembled into a ring
behind the TBM as it progresses steadily towards its
destination. These rings provide safety to users and
facilitate the installation of the road deck. All the
concrete segments used on this project were cast
onsite using specially imported precision molds, and
reinforced steel cages are also manufactured onsite
by our own trained personnel.
Due to the project worksite being on the Sinai
Peninsula,logistics of transporting materials and
people has taken a lot of careful planning. The remote
location also makes it a new experience for the 4,500
people presently employed. The internet provides the
important contact between workers and their loved
ones.The workforce is multinational,which necessi-
tates catering of different cuisines each day.
We agreed a contract to work together with iPS
of The Netherlands to provide specialist personnel
highly experienced in TBM tunnel
production to assist us with meeting our personnel
needs.’
An inside view of the Port Said site

a lovely sunny morning.
Palle: ‘I started on the Port
Said project last January in
the position of Tunnel Boring
Machine Pilot. In this position I
am responsible for controlling
the operating parameters of the
entire machine, including the
steering, to meet the guidance
targets. Our tolerances for steering are measured in
millimeters and in general we keep the TBM within
5 millimeters of the desired position, which is a
very small measurement compared to the size of
the TBM. As we advance the TBM through mainly
limestone and sand, geology segments are installed
to prevent collapse and water ingress.
Being part of such a prestigious project makes me
feel proud, helping create these tunnels for the ben-
efit of the hard-working Egyptian people. Knowing
that I am helping to create something that will last
for hundreds of years gives me immense satisfac-
tion at the end of each day.
When I’m not working it’s incredible to watch the
very large vessels which use the Suez Canal, steam
majestically along as though they are floating on
the desert sands, quite a sight to behold.’

Dmitrij Korolev, living in Kalinin-
grad in Russia, works for iPS for al-
most 10 years now. His history with
iPS started more than a decade ago
in February 2006. At that time, he
had never heard about iPS, but he
was looking for a good job and the
company was highly recommended
by Boskalis.
Dmitrij:‘The day
after my applica-
tion I was called
by a consultant
of the iPS Mari-
time department
asking me if I
was interested in
starting a job on the Heavy Lift Ves-
sel Svanen, and I promptly agreed.
At that moment I could not possibly
have guessed that my cooperation
with iPS would last so long.
I started on board the Svanen as an
Able Seaman, and rose over time to
become the deck Bosun, proceeding
to 3rd Officer. At this current mo-
ment I’m 2nd Officer onboard and
I am sure this is will not be the final
step in my iPS Offshore career.
The last 10 years my working life has
been orientated around working in
the European Offshore windfarm
industry, which for me is a very
interesting sector to work in. My first
project with the HLV Svanen was at
the windfarm near Egmond aan Zee,
in the Netherlands. After finishing
this project, we moved with the ves-
sel on towards the Walney II project,
Sheringham Shoal, Belwind, Anholt,
London Array, Arumbank and other
windfarm projects around the UK
and Europe.
One notable occurrence was in 2011,
when there was a mistake with my
visa to work in the UK sector, but to-
gether with iPS I was able to find an
option for me to join another vessel
at short notice. I was pleased to keep
working Offshore via iPS so I worked
hard and portrayed a positive indi-
cation to iPS. After this job a lot of
different iPS crew would proceed me
to go work onboard this cable lay
vessel, which continues until today.
Despite the nice work onboard the
other cable lay vessel, I was glad to
return to the HLV Svanen and with
great pleasure I still enjoy working
with my colleague seafarers on-
board.’

crew employed by Van Oord,I also took care of a flexible
workforce.At times,Van Oord works with Baltic crew.The
fact that iPS has an agency in Lithuania is very convenient.
The agency recruits staff on the spot and does a lot of
preparatory work.’
Projects of this kind require qualified crew, because
placing wind turbines is precise work, says Christian.‘The
staff must be able to do the right thing at the right time.
Experience is at least as important as good qualifications.
On this type of project, time pressure is high, often there is
no time to work with inexperienced colleagues.Pro-activi-
ty and safe working practices are paramount. For example,
when hoisting equipment is moved, everyone on board
must know;this requires experience.’
Meanwhile, the job has been completed, and the Svanen
has already sailed on for work on the German Arkona
Becken Südost offshore wind farm.Christian is back in
his office at iPS,looking back on a wonderful time: ‘It was
very pleasant and instructive to work on these projects in
my opinion.’
Christian: ‘A staff change in Van Oord’s crewing depart-
ment caused a lack of personnel. The department had so
much work to do and it urgently needed someone who
understood the requirements that the on-board crew
had to meet. That’s how I got started there. As a crewing
officer at Van Oord I was involved in the project and my
job went beyond my Maritime Consultant position at iPS.I
gained a lot of knowledge, which is very useful to provide
iPS services even more efficiently. In close consultation
with the captain,I scheduled the crew and made sure
they were on board at the right time.Sometimes a crew
member had to leave the ship at a moment’s notice
because of,for example,urgent family reasons.That’s a
stressful moment because it requires a replacement to be
arranged quickly.‘
Svanen works within the Offshore Wind Pool,as do the
ships Aeolus and Nexus, for which Christian has also
recruited and planned personnel.Svanen was purchased
by Van Oord and converted in 2014,making it suitable for
driving the piles for the foundation of wind turbines. The
Aeolus is also used for the transition of pieces and the
construction of the wind turbines themselves. The Nexus
is used for laying the cables on the seabed between wind
turbines.

MAC Offshore
Project: Marine Assets
Corporation (MAC)
Vessels: MAC Phoenix,
MAC Griffin, MAC Kestrel,
MAC Falcon, MAC Pegasus
Number of persons
per vessel: 15
Active for: offshore in Abu
Dhabi and Saudi Arabia
In Dubai,iPS is doing business with MAC Offshore (Marine
Assets Corporation),a shipbuilder/shipping company
owning six ships, which in recent years has increased its
focus on facilitating offshore projects in the Middle East.
Boudewijn Blatter,iPS Manager Middle East, directs the
office in Dubai and tells us how a small assignment grew
bigger.
Boudewijn: ‘For MAC,we provide complete crew manage-
ment:we supply the entire HR track, from crew recruit-
ment and payrolling to coordinating the logistics of the
crew.MAC contracted us because it wanted to organise
the crewing more professionally and according to Euro-
pean standards. It started with a few crew members on
one ship but now we are responsible for organising this
for all six ships. At iPS,we have an advanced IT system that
gives all colleagues around the world access to the same
candidates and enables us to act quickly.
There are always about fifteen men on board of each
ship.For MAC,we were looking for engineers,captains,
deck staff and sailors. The variety of positions was and is
great. The officers are mainly from Eastern Europe and the
ratings from Asia, which brings a mix of cultures on board.
The pressure to get everyone on board in time, with the
right experience and papers,is often great’,says Boude-
wijn.The ships have a‘minimum safe manning’to ensure
safe working conditions.Boudewijn: ‘MAC specialises
in offshore projects. They sail with DP2 Platform Supply
Vessels, for a variety of clients in the United Arab Emirates
and Saudi Arabia.MAC offers technical support for drilling
and diving operations,as well as logistical support when it
comes to supplying drilling rigs.’
Boudewijn tells us how business in the Middle East differs
from the European market and that it’s very price-driven.
‘It is up to you as a supplier to decide how far you want to
go.Then it turns out that we’re not the cheapest.
However,if a company wants to go for quality and
transparent payrolling, they will come to us.We are rather
stubborn, and stick to our vision of good employment
practices and European values. Many companies inquire
and go for the cheapest supplier. We do things in a differ-
ent way,we act as partner. We want to help companies
by focussing on the issue instead of just delivering. We
investigate the problem a company faces and we offer
possible solutions based on that. That’s why we keep a
close eye on how the market develops,so we can deliver
the right people quickly.‘

Marisa Suijker is one of the longest serving
employees of iPS.Last summer was her 17½
year anniversary with the company.Starting
as a commercial service employee,Marisa
continued to develop within the organization
and became an HR manager. Marisa is appreci-
ated by many colleagues for her reliability and
her ability to take on a lot of work behind the
scenes.
Summer Event
iPS’annual tradition:the iPS Summer Event.It
includes an afternoon full of joy, cheers and
sports.Organized by the founders of our Staff
Association,employees come together for
fun day activities and an entertaining evening
schedule.
The event was hosted at a Sports Club, where
a tennis and volleyball tournament were held
in the afternoon. In the evening our colleagues
could relax while enjoying a tasty barbeque
and enjoying some refreshing and well de-
served drinks. We were very lucky the sun was
shining,as it sure wasn’t forecasted.
Up to the next one!
Opportunities for women!
iPS is doing well when it comes to gender
distribution within the organization. At all our
offices worldwide,the percentages are 58%
men and 42% women.Compared with the
global average,we are well represented with
female colleagues.

Being successful for thirty years, in a constantly changing market, with new challenges
coming up again and again: how do you do it? Today, the iPS’ Directors team consists of
Rob Kooijmans and Hans van Burk. They lead the company with great passion. A candid
conversation about the power of iPS.
Both men spend time abroad regularly,
visiting iPS branches worldwide, but also
shaping partnerships with current and new
clients. At the company headquarters in
Capelle aan den IJssel, there is time for an
encounter and a stroll.
To get straight to the point:
what makes iPS so successful?
‘As a company, we work in an intermediary
sector, serving both clients and profession-
als, so our mission and vision is focused
on both parties. That process must be well
balanced. As far as the client is concerned,
we are not just suppliers, but above all;
partners. You have to understand what the
client’s challenge is: what is the reason he
needs staff, what is the issue? You become
a partner by working with the client in a
solution-oriented way. In other words: we
focus on troubleshooting rather than shift-
ing around people. We’re constantly look-
ing in the market for players to work with,
and subsequently become their exclusive
preferred supplier. In this process we are a
sparring partner, and that’s our strength.’
Why do clients choose to work
with iPS?
‘Clients select us exclusively, in part
because of the specialist experience of
the professionals we recruit, the exten-
sive possibilities for payrolling we offer,
but also because of our compliance: we
operate internationally in accordance with
applicable laws and regulations. We know
which possibilities there are and we’re able
to apply them quickly and put them into
effect. And iPS is also appreciated for its
transparency regarding our fees. It’s crystal
clear how wage costs, insurances and fees
are calculated; there are no misunderstand-
ings about this.’
Why do professionals like to
work for iPS?
Our professionals are experienced and have
the required professional knowledge. We
like to give them the opportunity to add to
their careers by participating in prestigious
projects, in an often interesting geograph-
ical area. It’s usually a great opportunity
to live and work abroad for a while. iPS is
known for being a company that practices
‘iPS is known as
a company that
practices what
it preaches’
what it preaches in terms of compensation
and we provide good employee benefits:
wherever you’re employed, you’re paid on
time and you’re well insured. The trick is to
retain staff, even at times when no work is
available. We actively exchange ideas about
career prospects and invest in training and
education.
Our staff in the office needs to have a cer-
tain eagerness, it needs to know how to get
things done, have a commercial spirit, but
it also must be meticulous. As far as recruit-
ment and selection is concerned, we always
need to work from two perspectives: one is
to recruit a good candidate, and the other
one is the client: he must be interested in
that person as well. If one of them needs
time to reconsider, you’re two steps back in
the process.’
That iPS feeling, can you
describe it?
‘iPS People like to jump onto the custom-
er’s problem, act quickly, and enter into a
partnership with the client. We are really
very proud of our consultants. They want
to act to relieve clients of their worries, to
solve problems. Clients keep coming back
to us for that. If a customer has a problem,
we immediately call on the people who
can solve it. We analyze and investigate as
to what can be done better. We are truly a
self-learning organization. This mentality
can be found to the same extent in our
back office, who prepares all the necessary
documents in time, with exactly the same
drive.’
As members of the board you fly
all across the globe. Are you in
charge 24/7?
‘We visit the various entities and offices,
provide support to our people, and we
visit clients, trade fairs, governments and
networks. It is good to show your face regu-
larly and look each other in the eyes; that’s
the best way to safeguard our iPS company
culture.
Rob is primarily a sparring partner for all
back office managers. There are two dimen-
sions to this: we are well informed about
what is happening and they have someone
peering over their shoulders. Hans focuses
primarily on business relationships. Sure,
we’re working long weeks. But we are also
free to do what we do. Work hard, play
hard. If you start feeling that you have to
work hard and work many hours you will
become unhappy. So we are always aware
of finding the right balance.’
Has the market changed
compared to some years ago?
‘The financial crisis has led us to expand
into other markets. Some of our traditional
markets declined, and it seemed it would
take some time for those markets to recov-

er. We have started serving a wider market
and expanded geographically, and we were
able to deploy our professionals to several
new locations.
Our clients also went looking for neighbor-
ing markets. It is important to follow what
they do and engage in dialogue, to engage
in the process at an early stage. There are
many developments around the world that
we critically monitor. When oil or gas is be-
ing searched for in a particular region and
no ports exist in that region, you know that
at some stage partners will be sought to
help build them. We can organize that. An-
other example is the oil market in Mexico,
which has become more privately owned.
The first employees will be needed there in
2019, and we are already working on that.
When the price of oil recently plummet-
ed, we noticed that plenty of work was
available on the downstream side, because
refineries continue to operate. We have
developed a turnaround concept, which
now we’re also offering to the international
market. We offer comprehensive project
teams that are well attuned to each other.
The way we offer cross-border payrolling
is unique, as a result of which we’re able
to provide an interesting offer to highly
educated professionals. They like to work
for iPS and increasingly do so.’
What are you planning for the
future?
‘We continue to look for segments that bor-
der on what we already do, to ensure that
our people are broadly and flexibly employ-
able. Take the example of the turnaround
concept. Those working in the upstream oil
and gas segment can do the same thing in
the process industry and engineering mar-
ket. We critically monitor whether or not
we’re present on the right locations.
We anticipate developments at an early
stage. For example: more and more ships
are sailing on LPG. So you need people who
can deal with that. We will soon have those
people. We are anticipating this imminent
scarcity.
As far as the segments are concerned,
many things are about to happen. We have
mapped all wind energy projects until
2023. We know who the players are. But
competition is fierce.
There is also a lot to do in the civil-engi-
neering market worldwide, especially in
tunnelling. There are fewer players in that
market, and we are known for our exper-
tise and problem-solving approach.’
What are you really proud of?
‘We’ve come up with a lot of ideas that
work out well. That really gives us a thrill.
It’s so much fun when a concept generates
drive and enthusiasm among our people.
Of course, we are also proud of the industry
and the projects we work at. Knowing that
one hundred and fifty of us are participat-
ing, for example, in the Suez Canal project,
in the London metro tunnel or the
Westerschelde tunnel projects make us
proud. These projects are items in the news
and in documentaries, producing beautiful
images that speak for themselves.’

44.2 million people are working in Germa-
ny at this moment. It has never been more.
But according to the Basel based research
institute Prognos already in 2030 there will
be a need of 3 million qualified personnel.
In 2040 this will even increase to 3.3 million
professionals.
We see this bottleneck already today. Our
clients are mostly positive in regards to the next
year(s) but see a challenge in finding the suita-

Patrick Mans is Commercial Operations
Manager at iPS and responsible for bring-
ing strategy into practice. One of the ways
in which he does this is by giving guidance
to the managers who, together with their
staff, receive and address requests from
clients and the Sales department.
‘My main role is to guide the Processes’,
says Patrick.
Patrick:‘I stimulate proactivity and I make sure
that our success ranking is as high as possible.
We get many ad hoc questions which should
preferably be resolved that day. It will be too
late to start looking for the right people at
the end of the day so we focus on creating
pools to be able to provide a shortlist of
suitable candidates at the right time and at
the appropriate pace.To do that right, the iPS
spirit is very useful:We observe closely and
react rapidly. And, if necessary, with a little bit
of aggression. Knowing that sometimes half an
hour can make the difference.’
Patrick studied Tax and Business Economics and
got in touch with iPS more than six years ago.
‘To me,it was a completely new industry,which
turned out to be extremely dynamic, and iPS is
a very good employer. The expertise needed in
cross-border payrolling was highly appealing to
me.The owners of iPS had already put this con-

Exclusive supplier
iPS will increasingly operate on long-term
customer contracts, not only focused on pro-
viding staff, but above all, acting as a partner
to jointly solve the issues covered by the
agreement. Of course, clients can also work
with other companies, but iPS strives to be
their exclusive supplier.
White collar
iPS will continue to supply all common crew
positions, but it will increasingly focus on
the white-collar staff, who are preferably
transferred from one project to another and
hence committed to iPS.With its focus on
white-collar positions, iPS also wants to focus
increasingly on filling permanent positions
with our clients.
Wind energy
Wind energy is an internationally booming
business. There is a strong need for technical
personnel in the wind industry. Now,and in the
years to come.
Decommissioning
Over the next thirty or forty years there will be
many offshore platforms and other installations
that need to be dismantled, also known as
decommissioning. It is expected that iPS will
provide staff for this specialized kind of work.
Total peace of mind
For many companies,cross-border payrolling is

Powerful People
working at its
offices around
the globe. We celebrate our multicultural DNA. We introduce four
of our consultants who live and work in different countries than
the country in which they were born. What made them go there?
What are the differences they experience? Read their stories.
In March 2018 General Crewing marks
four years of cooperation with iPS. Those
4 years of cooperation lead to steady inte-
gration with iPS, growing our businesses
together towards one iPS, and becoming
iPS Baltics.
Since the very beginning in 2014 we expanded
our database and our capabilities to find the
right people for the job.Currently our database
expands to more than fifteen thousand candi-
dates that come from all over the world, but the
core is in our base, the Baltic states.
In addition to the growing database we have
expanded our services bit by bit, providing not
only crewing,but also document management
training and payroll, but also becoming the only
Marlins training center in Lithuania.iPS Baltics is
one of the few IMIST approved by OPITO invig-
ilation centers in the Baltics. Our biggest dedica-
tion, however, during those years was to create
a service that would cover all of these parts. We
achieved this by providing the service to our
main partner,iPS,and that laid the framework to
provide it to other businesses.
During the years we have provided people to
Maritime,Oil and Gas and Wind Energy sectors,
but we are not stopping there. We are always
seeking rapidly expanding markets and we
offer solutions that will support their growth.
In September 2017 we made the first firm step
into the Cruise industry by participating in the
Seatrade Europe Exhibition where we present-
ed the full range of services of iPS powerful
people. This spring will be a new beginning:
then our people will start working on cruise
vessels. All of this has been achieved by Gen-
eral Crewing;iPS’Baltics team. The day at the
office may starts quietly and calm, but this qui-
etness may change into a busy day of client’s
requests at any moment, and that is where our
team strives the most.
By providing the best service, pushing ourselves
further for all our clients, paying attention to our
candidates,listening to both sides,becoming a
part of and having the support of the global iPS
family we can expand and grow with dedica-
tion and integrity. This will allow us to achieve
not only growth but also brand knowledge. We
will have the satisfaction of knowing that the
clients trust us to provide the people that they
need at the crucial moment.

Position: Tunnelling & Civil
	Consultant
Origin:	Denmark
1 How long have you been working
	 in the Netherlands?
I came to the Netherlands in 2003 for my
Dutch husband, who I met as a travel guide in
Greece. After we met we travelled around the
world. An unforgettable experience! In 2010 I
returned to the Netherlands and I have been
working at iPS since 2011.
2 What do you do for iPS?
I’m a Tunnelling Consultant, and I am special-
ized in providing the right people for large
projects around the world. I have a lot of
contact with our clients. As a result, I know
even better what kind of people they need at
every stage of a project. My son, however, de-
scribed it in the best possible way at school
the other day:‘My mom builds tunnels with
powerful people.’I think that is a nice way to
say it.
3 What are the biggest differences
	 between Denmark and the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is truly a multicultural coun-
try. I like that, because it works very well.
Haha, another big difference is the way you
eat herring. In both countries we eat it a lot,
but you do it in a bit of a strange way.
4 What do you miss most from
	Denmark?
My family and friends, but also our many
traditions! For example, during Christmas we
walk around the Christmas tree singing and
in the whole country we eat the same dessert
(risalamande). I also miss my country’s space
and tranquillity. In Denmark, life is slower
and we spend a lot of time outside the house.
Prams are parked outside with sleeping
babies in them, even in shopping streets. You
cannot imagine that happening here, but in
Denmark it’s very common.
5 Was it hard to integrate
	 (into Dutch society)?
More difficult than I expected. I will never
stop integrating. Except during King’s Day,
then we are all orange!
6 Tell us something about the clothes
	 you wear.
My Danish father turned 60 and for the party
I bought this dress with a typical Dutch pat-
tern. Of course, they had to laugh a lot when
they saw me.
Name: Melike Durmaz
Location: Dubai, United Arab
	Emirates
Position: Business Manager
	 Middle East
Origin: The Netherlands
1. How long have you been working
		 in Dubai?
I have been in Dubai for six months
now. I have been a global traveller
since my childhood. I love my
freedom and working here is a
great opportunity.
2. What do you do for iPS?
I always call myself a ‘professional
coffee drinker’ haha, but officially
I’m Business Manager, Middle
East. I am responsible for business
development throughout the Middle
East.
3. What are the biggest differences
		 between Dubai and the
		 Netherlands?
Everything is possible in Dubai! You
can ski in a shopping mall in the hot
desert, which is a bizarre idea of
course. Just imagine something and
it’s here in Dubai, and if not, it will
definitely be here soon. In business,
Dutch people draw rather hasty
conclusions, while the Emirati takes a
friendly detour. Politeness and trust
are extremely important.
Another interesting difference is the
fact that here we work from Sunday
‘til Thursday, as opposed to Monday
‘til Friday in the Netherlands.
4. What do you miss the most about
		 the Netherlands?
Drinking water from the tap.
However, I have lived here only for
a short time, too short to really miss
anything about the Netherlands.
5. Was it hard to integrate?
No, not really. Dubai is very
hospitable and polite. Perhaps it’s
easy to integrate because of the
large international community. They
know what it’s like to be new here. I
was immediately invited by people
for dinner and drinks, very nice!
6. Tell us about what you’re holding
		 in your hands.
I’m holding a hookah, but I wonder
if this symbolizes Dubai. Hospitality
and wanting to be the best in what
they do is what really characterizes
Emirati.

Name: Guido van der Zwet
Location: Mexico
Function: Manager Americas
Origin: The Netherlands
1 How long have you been working
	 in Mexico?
I came to Mexico in 2006 to write my the-
sis. I fell in love and never went back to the
Netherlands again. I have been working at
iPS since 2013.
2 What do you do for iPS?
I am the manager of Americas, and respon-
sible for the two locations in Mexico. We
deliver people and solutions from Alaska
to Argentina. In addition, I am a co-found-
er of the Dutch Energy Association, a
non-profit organization that actively stim-
ulates cooperation between Mexico and
the Netherlands in the energy sector.
3 What are the biggest differences
between Mexico and the Netherlands?
In the Netherlands we are always talking
about the weather, haha! In Mexico we talk
about food, because that is the most im-
portant thing. Doing business is also very
different. In Mexico, you must
first work on the relationship and
goodwill. We have other Ps here:
Presence, People and Patience.
As a result-oriented, fast-working
Dutchman, you have to get used to that.
4 What do you miss most about
	 The Netherlands?
My family, of course, but also‘snert’
(traditional Dutch pea soup) and
croquettes.
5 Was it difficult to integrate into the
	 Mexican culture?
No. It surprised me how open, friendly
and welcoming Mexicans are to foreign-
ers. Mi casa es tu casa, it’s really like that.
Mexicans are very proud people, you must
be aware of that. Speak the language and
adapt but stay yourself.
6 Tell us about what you’re wearing.
This is a poncho. Actually, I don’t like it
very much because this is part of the
stereotypical picture that everyone has
of Mexico. We must get rid of that image.
Mexico is a beautiful and complete country
that is developing in a special way. I’m a
proud Mexican and a proud Dutchman.
Name: Alevtina Mos -
	Vishnevskaya
Location: The Netherlands
Position: Consultant Energy
Origin:	Russia
1 How long have you been working in
	 the Netherlands?
In April 2012 I came to the Netherlands for
my husband. I met him when he was working
at a gas project on Sakhalin, a Russian island
just north of Japan. That is where I’m from.
Three months after I arrived in the Nether-
lands I started working at iPS.
2 What do you do for iPS?
I’m a Consultant Energy. My expertise is find-
ing white collar staff for our clients. In my role
I support all industries for which iPS provides
staff. It’s an amazing job!
3 What are the biggest differences between
	 the Netherlands and Russia?
Haha, I think the Dutch invented the agen-
da! You guys plan things so far ahead that
meeting someone to drink a cup of coffee
‘spontaneously’has to be planned 3 weeks
in advance. In Russia, you just call and drink
coffee that same afternoon. Oh, and riding a
bike and the skills Dutch people have doing
that, it’s incredible to see! You won’t believe
your eyes watching business people in their
tight suits, riding a bike and making a phone
call at the same time, or carrier bikes with car
seats on them!
4 What do you miss most about Russia?
The Russian language is what I miss most.
Being able to say something exactly the way
you want to, without the filter of translation.
And, of course, I miss my friends and family.
5 Was it hard to integrate into
	 Dutch society?
To be allowed to come to the Netherlands I
had to take an exam on the internet. After
three years I had to take my civic integration
exam in order to be allowed to stay. I wanted
more and took the exam at a higher level. The
Dutch welcomed me with open arms, they
are very open and friendly people.
6 Tell us about what you’re holding in
	 your hands.
Tulips are, of course, a typical Dutch symbol.
It’s very funny: in Russia we have a bad song
which says that when a man gives you yellow
tulips, the relationship will end.

Sharing
means
growthThey meet at the
Dredging Museum in
thetownofSliedrecht,
where the dredging
industry was born.
Leo Oostendorp and Theo Wanders, iPS founders and owners, are clearly enjoying
themselves. The model ships, photos and paintings on display loosen their tongues
and stories are told. A perfect atmosphere for a retrospective look at iPS’ past.
T
hey met for the first time at a job
in Bahrain, about 43 years ago.
Oostendorp was a technical in-
spector, Wanders a construction engineer
working as an assistant accountant. Even
though they regularly changed jobs,
clients and countries, they kept running
into each other. The moment Zanen Ver-
stoep and Boskalis decided to join forces
and, in doing so, cleaned up the dredging
industry about 30 years ago, Wanders
and Oostendorp asked each other: ‘Do
we sell ourselves to the market or do we
start a business of our own?’ That was
when they founded iPS.
100,000 guilders
At that time, Theo Wanders had gained
a great deal of experience as head of
human resources, and Leo Oostendorp
knew all about technology. It was obvi-
ous they’d start a company specializing
in recruitment and selection. ‘We both
put 100,000 guilders of our own money
and rented an office in Leiden. It went
well right from the start. We had an
extensive network of qualified people.
‘Noor knew
exactly what
type of person
would suit iPS’
At that time, the dredging industry was
in bad shape, many people were made
redundant. We outsourced many of them
to jobs in the shipping, civil and offshore
industries, from a single person to a
complete team of staff. One thing led to
the other. Initially, a request for a bridge
builder would come in, but we ended up
delivering an entire building team. We
had the courage to mediate jobs particu-
larly for highly qualified staff. They were
desperately needed, for example for the
construction of new ships. We organized
logistics around jobs as well. That way,
more work came our way and subse-
quently a complete chain of services was
created.’
Speak the language
Wanders and Oostendorp started a
subsidiary office in Capelle aan den
IJssel, mainly because a large number of
workers were available in that area and
there was an increasing demand for the
supply of fleet personnel. ‘We smelled
the opportunities and took care of the
niches. The companies we worked for
knew us and granted us the business. We
spoke the language of our clients. That,
and the fact that we knew the market
and the people qualified for the job, gave
us an advantage over our competitors’.
How things went in the past
According to Wanders and Oostendorp,
finding the right people used to be
different from how it is now. ‘Email and
WhatsApp didn’t exist; we called can-
didates after 5 PM, so they were free to
talk. When they arrived at the office for
an interview, our secretary Noor gave the
candidate a cup of coffee in the waiting
room. She would shake her head in pity
if she believed it wasn’t a suitable candi-
date. She was right most of the time. She
knew exactly what type of person would
suit iPS’ clients: no pretence, no attitude,
down-to-earth, a go-getter. You immedi-
ately noticed whether a candidate would
hit the ground running, even though
he had no diplomas. The trick was to
convince a client he would be taking in a
guy with character. Nowadays you can’t
get to a job without a diploma, times
have really changed.’
‘Perhaps we are old-style entrepreneurs’,
say Oostendorp and Wanders. ‘We
believe that a real entrepreneur does
business using his own money, not a
loan from the bank. We could work with
many companies that do not have their
own money. They borrow money and can
Theo Wanders
46 47
only pay the bill in six months’ time. We
don’t want that. We do offer payrolling,
but only to financially sound companies.’
Segments
The segments in which iPS now operates
have grown almost organically. ‘Oppor-
tunities always just crossed our path.
For example: we’d hired someone who
knew someone who was building the
tunnel between Terneuzen and Vlissin-
gen. It turned out the joint venture of
the project had a problem rewarding the
tunnel workers employed on the pro-
ject. We took on some of the workmen.
Eventually we delivered a complete team
of tunnel workers for the construction of
a tunnel under the Pannerdensch canal.
Our people knew the machines and
because of that they ended up working
on a tunnel project in Sweden, and that
way business expanded. The same thing
happened in the Wind Energy market.
The vessel we provided the crew for was
given a contract to build windmills. For
us, this was a niche that we took on with
both hands. The essence is: Taking the
burden away from the client‘.
Pride
Wanders and Oostendorp are proud to
have started a business that is still viable
after 30 years. They have grown without
the need for bank loans and not by just
focusing on profit. ‘We have created a
company people like to work for. Of
course, we know that money must be
made in the end. But iPS is about human
value, about socially-motivated entre-
preneurship. That’s what we consider
important.’
The owners of iPS are credited for their
modesty. ‘At the time, we were very
happy with our small, 70 square meter
office. We have always believed in being
modest, to not stand out from the crowd,
and doing the job as reliably as we can.
Many people like to tell you about how
good they are. Appearing to be interested
in another person often turns out to be
self-interest. It’s a way of doing things
that doesn’t work for us, but of course
we also know that it’s important to show
what we‘re doing’.
Partners
For Wanders and Oostendorp partnership
speaks for itself. ‘Our secret? Granting
each other an opportunity and knowing
you can’t do it all by yourself. Allowing
each other the space one needs and
respecting each other’s expertise. Most
of all it’s our ability to share. If you work
together well, you can multiply your
business and earn good money. We know
for a fact that sharing is growing.’
The future
Oostendorp and Wanders have now both
retired. But this does not mean they’re
no longer involved with iPS. ‘Men of our
age often do different things than we do
now. They play golf, watch TV, they’re
busy with their children and grandchil-
dren. We both do not have children, so
we have time to spare. We still enjoy
being active in our profession, however,
we have a different way of putting the
concept of ownership into practice. We
see fellow professionals, visit trade fairs,
we watch, we talk, we hear about new
developments, which we sometimes pass
on to management. That’s something we
enjoy. When we’re on the road we never
see each other, as we’re always busy with
other people. We go out and talk to the
right people, just like we’ve always done
in a straightforward manner.
We are still the owners of a beautiful
company. We would like to keep it
that way. And we are certainly going
to celebrate the company’s thirtieth
anniversary. How? We will leave that to
management.’
‘We have
always
believed in
being modest’
Leo Oostendorp

QHSE stands for Quality,Health,Safety
and Environment.A broad area that
focuses on improving business pro-
cesses and increasing customer satisfaction.The
fact that QHSE are mentioned together has to
do with the quality standards and certification
which apply to all components and sometimes
overlap.Jeffrey: ‘It’s not just about complying
with the law,it’s about the constant desire to
improve. At IPS we’re really good at that.
Jeffrey’s work largely consists of conducting re-
search,measuring customer satisfaction,meas-
uring risks and measuring efficiency.Jeffrey:
‘Monitoring customer satisfaction always pro-
vides points for improvement when it comes
to efficiency,cost savings,simplifying working
methods and adapting systems. We also con-
duct internal audits. If there is an incident or a
bottleneck,a thorough analysis is carried out.
Of course, even more important is preventing
these things from happening.Prevention is an
important part of my work.’
The H and E refer to occupational health and
safety policy. It’s about the way you are sitting
behind your desk, right up to the safety of iPS
personnel on board.Do they have good work
equipment, safe clothing? What risks are they
exposed to and how is safety guaranteed?’
Jeffrey: ‘28 days after employment there is a
safety check and again at the end of the job.We
don’t do this just because of the certification. It
is mainly for identifying risks and improving our
services.’
Jeffrey makes sure he is well informed about
QHSE worldwide. All branches have iPS staff
working within this area and occasionally he
visits all branch offices.‘Through personal con-
tact I am able to identify problems even better.
It’s hard work and long hours meeting as many
people as possible but you won’t hear me com-
plaining:iPS is a great company to work for!’
QHSE and the
constant desire
to improve
Jeffrey Nouwen is the QHSE officer of iPS. His
mission: safe and healthy working conditions,
compliance with the law, as well as ensuring support
for QHSE among his colleagues. Jeffrey: ‘Constantly
asking “why” helps to improve quality.’
He is not only the lawyer setting the
framework for all contracts and checking
them against international legislation
and regulations, but he is also respon-
sible for privacy. ‘It’s a hot item’, says
lawyer Gertjan de Mare. ‘If your privacy
is not well-managed, then fines can run
into the millions.’
Acopy of a passport,a Citizen Service
Number or a Visa request:you send it
by email, and it crosses networks on
the internet.With a bit of bad luck,information
is lost or gets into the wrong hands.Since
current legislation is no longer fully compatible
with the digital world,a new European privacy
regulation guaranteeing the protection of per-
sonal data has been adopted:The General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR),which will come
into force in May 2018.
iPS has multiple offices in Europe and needs to
share sensitive information privately worldwide.
Therefore,iPS invests heavily in protective
measures.Gertjan de Mare has been appoint-
ed Data Protection Officer. ‘We consider it
important to properly regulate the protection
of personal data before the GDPR comes into
force. If you wait to regulate it at the moment
the GDPR comes into force you’re too late. That
is why we are currently in the process of obtain-
ing ISO 27001 certification.With the ISO 27001
certification, you show that as an organization
you have regulated the protection of privacy
and sensitive information. In 2018 we will be au-
dited under this certification. In order to comply
with the ISO 9001 2015 standard,we will con-
tinue to audit ourselves.Doing so we complete
the chain not just within the organization, but
also with the stakeholders as our suppliers
must also have solid privacy policies. It’s very
important that our own employees know the
rules well and apply them correctly. That is why
we train them, develop work processes and put
authorizations in place.’
As a Data Protection Officer,Gertjan and a team
of specialists closely monitor the evolution of
privacy: ‘These are issues that have not yet
fully matured. We have to conduct continuous
research and remain well-informed but also de-
velop our own opinions. Now I am in an adviso-
ry role whilst we are setting the framework but
in 2018 I will be monitoring and taking action
as well.Without this,we cannot be accountable
to the Data Protection Authority.
At iPS,we have drawn up a code of conduct
that has to be applied worldwide. It explains the
purpose and principles for processing personal
data, how we deal with it and how they can be
influenced.’

D
iandra: ‘As a Consultant,you have a
360-degree role.This means that you
maintain contact with both candi-
date and customer. When we receive a request
from a client,we search for matches in our own
system. If no one is available,we search on the
web’.Diandra is responsible for‘white collar’
positions,in particular staff functions.These are
higher education graduates,such as engineers,
superintendents and project managers.
The technical aspect is intriguing
‘The combination of helping people and
commerce,that’s what I find interesting’,says
Diandra,‘I love to organize things well and
quickly.Before I started working for iPS,I worked
in the temporary employment industry,where
I took care of staff at production level.I’d never
thought that I would work at iPS serving this
niche, the technical sector. This job suits me
very well.
If you’re not familiar with this job, many aspects
of it are quite inconceivable. There are process-
es which one usually doesn’t think of.That’s
why this technical world in which iPS operates
intrigues me.It’s a very specific industry.
I always want to know how something is made
and what is involved in a production process.I
learned a lot about it in a short time, especially
because both clients and candidates are willing
to talk about their work. What strikes me is that
the people working in this area are extremely
passionate and that’s contagious.
The human aspect of my work fascinates me.
I am well aware that our candidates are often
away from home for a long time and leave their
families behind.Understanding that fact is at
least as important as getting a good match.
That kind of consideration is always present at
iPS.Working for this company is really extremely
satisfying.’
The process
Diandra: ‘Each project for which we are looking
for people is different.A suitable Curriculum Vi-
tae doesn’t say it all.During an intake or inven-
tory, you make an in-depth analysis in order to
be able to translate the ideas into practice. This
way you discover what needs there are,and
you keep learning. While working together with
my colleagues I continue to develop myself.
Using my intuition and experience,I can
operate quickly and decide which way to go in
order to achieve a successful placement.
‘It’s great to work for both the candidate and
the customer.Sometimes there is some doubt
with one party and there may be a need to
have more information to get a match,or to
keep on looking for other candidates.Once
there’s a match,we pay a lot of attention to af-
tercare and we check whether both candidate
and client are satisfied.
Euphoria
‘Whatever the point of departure, our goal is
to unburden the customer. If there is a good
match,our mission has been successful.Of
course, there is a sense of euphoria at that mo-
ment. But the real work starts on two sides, with
the client and candidate. It’s about understand-
ing the needs that exist in order to fulfil the
advisory role and resolve the situation. We are
transparent and provide updates and insight
into the ongoing processes. That is where our
strength lies.’
‘Our goal is
to unburden’

iPS Magazine 2018

  • 2. 3 PrefaceOn the cover: W ith great pride we present to you the 2018 edition of our annual magazine, which has been restyled. It has a new look and feel, because we will celebrate our 30th anniversary. An anniversary calls for some retrospect. We do this together with our founders, Leo Oostendorp and Theo Wanders, who met in the Dredging Museum at an interview. Last summer, many of our iPS staff met at our headquarters. The objective of the meeting was to network and share knowledge, but of course there was also time for fun. This is shown on the cover of this edition! The mission, vision and services of iPS are described in this magazine. We also provide an overview of the various market segments in which we operate worldwide. We highlight some of the projects we are proud of and give our clients, staff and project managers the opportunity to share their experiences. Our core business is recruitment and cross-border payrolling. In several articles of this magazine you will read that we’re good at what we do.The positions we mediate are of a very diverse nature. One of our consultants tells us how the mediation process works. Crossing borders:At iPS we know all about it.How does it feel to work in a foreign country for a long time? What do you miss and what can“be missed like a toothache”, as we say in the Netherlands? Four of our stars abroad tell their story. Quality development, compliance and privacy are paramount to iPS.Our staff members know everything about these. They tell us about how they manage them from day to day. During a walk through the port of Rotterdam on a sunny, windy day we discussed how we as a Directors team manage iPS and what we think is important in this regard. This, and much more, can be read and viewed in this magazine. The idea behind this: ‘Together we make iPS!’ That’s why we would like to thank all our clients again this year for their confidence, and our employees and suppliers for their commitment and dedication during 2017. We wish you pleasant reading. iPS Directors, Rob Kooijmans and Hans van Burk In this anniversary magazine we want to take a moment to present the Powerful People of iPS to you. On the cover you will find some of our international staff, who came together last summer to meet and share knowledge. Of course, there was also time for fun, which shows on the cover of this special edition! • 5. 8 9 One iPS Working together, consultation and combined knowledge ensure smooth business operations. Even though iPS operates in a variety of indus- tries and has several international offices, its unity remains intact. The mosaic demonstrates this well: all individual activities combined make this company strong. One iPS!
  • 6. CIVIL CONSTRUCTION CIVIL DREDGING ENERGY MARITIME OFFSHORE/ OIL& GAS PAYROLL PROJECT MANAGEMENT SHIPBUILDING TOWAGE TUNNELLING OUR INDUSTRIES OUR SERVICES TURNAROUND MANAGEMENT RECRUITMENT 10 11 The market Thirty years ago,iPS became known especially for permanent staffing services for ships.Soon afterwards,iPS became a major player in the maritime world. There are still clients who see iPS as a crewing specialist for dredgers. Fact is that we are now also filling permanent management positions for companies in va- rious segments. In recent years, the market has changed enormously due to increasing digitisation, specialised technology and the development of a knowledge-based economy. The market in which iPS operates is growing rapidly, leading to an increasing need for specialised and highly trained personnel. For example,iPS is active in the niche market of tunnelling, having a large pool of specialists and with knowledge of unique solutions. iPS has grown into a company that offers full peace of mind to clients in the field of recruit- ment and specialises in cross-border payrolling: providing the best people around the world under the most favourable conditions for both clients and candidates. This process is facilita- ted with offices all over the world. It’s precisely because of our flexibility, speed and our large network that we are able to meet these custo- mer needs in an effective way. Wherever we operate we highly value good relationships with both candidates and clients, in a humane, transparent and professional man- ner.Our motto is:an agreement is an agree- ment, say what you do and do what you say. The job was a challenge because we were different nationalities working together. This makes things a bit complicated at times due to issues with language barriers and dif- ferent way of doing things. But once we got to know each other we became a very strong team capable of handling any task given to us. I found lots of challenges throughout this project as we needed to be on top of things to avoid downtimes due to equipment failures. We often received several calls during our shift, especially during projects to fix breakdowns and to avoid them, in order to maintain the ves- sel properly and meet the planned production times. Our turnover has doubled in four years, and more and more projects coming in.The way we approached the Sapura Energy project is a textbook example for us.The client, the client’s client as well as the staff who worked for us are satisfied. We have been able to maintain 120 families for six months. That’s great, isn’t it?’ It was a mammoth task providing staff for the Malaysian company Sapura Energy. From his office in Mexico, Guido van der Zwet, Manager Americas at iPS, talks with pride about a successful partnership. At an onboard station, the 18-kilometre long pipeline was welded and subsequently lowered to 300 metres below sea level. The job took six months to complete. Guido: ‘For a job like this we recruit staff,we conduct the interviews and we check their credentials. Many of the staff had previously worked for us which saved us time. Before boarding they are subjected to a practical exam,to ensure we provide the client with qualified personnel. We then provide‘door-to-door’service:we pick up the staff, arrange a hotel for them in the city where they will stay and we arrange their transport to the port. From there, the client takes over.We changed 40 crews simultaneously. • 11. Mexico- City San Jose Guatemala Playa del Carmen San Salvador Chihuahua MEXICO CIVIL ENERGY MARITIME 20 21 Joost van Aardenne works for BP in Mexico as Retail Asset Manage- ment Director. As a result of the opening up of the fuels market, his task, clearly put, is to develop a retail network strategy for BP in Mexico and to lead its implemen- tation. Joost:‘Our goal is to achieve a nationwide net- work of approx- imately 1,500 service stations in 5 years time and to achieve a market share of more than 15%. To achieve this, we are opening ten petrol stations a week. We perma- nently employ between 100 and 120 people to negotiate contracts with owners and dealers and to change petrol stations from the Pemex brand to BP. We also explore the construction of new service stations in good locations. We have been warmly welcomed by Mexican clients. Why? BP is the first international oil company to open a service station in more than 80 years. This has generated a huge amount of positive publicity. In addi- tion to the BP brand, the determin- ing factors are the prime locations of the stations, the service, delivering the right amount of purchased fuel as well as the quality of the fuel. We are also helping to protect our clients engines. Our fuel scientists have come up with a new and unique gasoline for Mexico – that you can only buy at our stations. BP gasoline with ACTIVE tech- nology protects the engine from building-up of harmful deposits. We have an active presence in social media, and get lots of great feedback on the performance of our product and on the fact that we give complete litres.’ iPS has found and appointed the first Project Management Officer for BP. This is a key role for provid- ing support to the rapid growth plans for the Retail business and to manage it in a process-oriented manner. Joost: ‘Perhaps more staff will be recruited in the future, such as project engineers, architects and contract negotiators. In addition to retail, BP is also active in other areas in Mexico. The“Upstream” division, for example, was awarded two deepwater exploration blocks. We sell Castrol lubricants and we are active in the supply of aviation fuels to our clients at the most important Mexican airports.’ Doing business in Mexico is special, says Joost.‘It’s great to work in a country with such a rich history and culture. The liberalisation of the market offers a huge amount of energy and business opportunities. Is it a thrill to participate in this pro- ject? Absolutely! We sometimes say to each other here: we are making history. Currently, there is no other country where BP is growing as fast as in Mexico. For BP, the current de- velopment in Mexico serves an ex- emplary role, which we also want to realize in the future in other growth markets such as China, Indonesia and India.’ BP in Mexico ‘We are proud of our first collaboration with BP’ Dossier: BP First Mexican BP gas station opened: on 9 March 2017 After rebranding: 80% more turnover Ambition: 1,500 gas stations in 5 years Number of cars in Mexico: 18 million Release gas prices: 1 January 2018 In Mexico, iPS has entered into a partnership with British Petroleum (BP). Whereas until recently all petrol stations were owned by the Mexican state-owned company Pemex, more and more foreign companies are taking over the petrol stations, including BP. which is the contact between the petrol stations being converted and BP’s management team. The project is a great success. Guido van der Zwet, Manager Americas: ‘BP is the first company besides the state-owned company to open a petrol station. It was exciting to see how the Mexicans would react to this foreign company, but the petrol sta- tion in Mexico City has more than doubled its revenue. Because of this, it even has one of the largest sales per pump in the world. The Mexicans are happy for several reasons. The sale of petrol is transparent: you get what you pay for.The service is important: there is a shop, your windows are washed and the tyre pressure is checked. There is always a line of twenty cars, non-stop, 24 hours a day. We provided BP the first PMO (Project Manager Officer), the person who internally coordinates the rebuilding of the stations. Christopher Elizelde, senior recruiter iPS and contact person for the management of BP, mediat- ed this PMO.The complex issue was that the position Joost van Aardenne, Retail Asset Management Director of BP ‘We are making history’ did not yet exist. In this case, it was mainly a matter of knowing exactly what the client needed and looking for the right person in comparable industries. Eventual- ly Christopher quickly found the right person, with the right experience. The expectation is that we will recruit and mediate more of these PMOs. For BP and others, we are a company that knows well how to operate in Mexico; we have knowledge of the industry. We are the experts, we give advice and share our knowledge. When these companies are successful, they often also need staff. That is a win-win situation. BP’s plans are ambitious, yet the market is big enough. In Mexico City alone, there are 8 million cars. The coun- try is 47 times larger than the Netherlands. There is almost no rail traffic, all transportation is done by car or truck. By January 1, 2018, petrol prices will be released and by 2019 anyone will be allowed to import petrol. We are proud of our first collaboration with BP, and of course we hope that we can also help them with other projects and that this will lead to more business.’ A beautiful picture of a newly built BP gas station. The plans are ambitious: BP recently opened its first petrol station, and in the next five years another 1500 petrol stations will be opened in Mexico. BP’s aim is not so much to open new stations as to rebrand existing ones. iPS provided BP with a PMO (Project Manager Officer),

Bore ø of tunnels: 13.05 m Internal ø: 11.40 m Road tunnels: 2,800 m each Length of project: March 2016 till March 2018 Total workers: Up to 4,500 Material: two Slurry System TBMs, each with a cutter head power of 3,500 kW. The purpose of the tunnels is to allow greater transit capacity between the highly populated districts of the Nile Delta to the Sinai Peninsula. At present traffic flow is restricted:many people have to use the system of ferries that operate out of Port Said. Stephan: ‘From a technical standpoint, the tunnels will each be 2.8 km long with an internal diameter of 11.40 metres allowing for two lanes of traffic per tunnel. They will be excavated using two Slurry System TBMs,each with a cutter head power of 3,500 kW.This type of TBM transports spoil to the surface in a bentonite solution through pipes attached to the TBM by a telescopic pipe system. On reaching the surface all the bentonite slurry is run through a separation plant to extract the spoil, thereby making the bentonite solution reusable, reducing wastage and helping the environment. The tunnel is lined with concrete segments each weigh- ing close to 13 tons, which are assembled into a ring behind the TBM as it progresses steadily towards its destination. These rings provide safety to users and facilitate the installation of the road deck. All the concrete segments used on this project were cast onsite using specially imported precision molds, and reinforced steel cages are also manufactured onsite by our own trained personnel. Due to the project worksite being on the Sinai Peninsula, logistics of transporting materials and people has taken a lot of careful planning. The remote location also makes it a new experience for the 4,500 people presently employed. The internet provides the important contact between workers and their loved ones. The workforce is multinational, which necessi- tates catering of different cuisines each day. We agreed a contract to work together with iPS of The Netherlands to provide specialist personnel highly experienced in TBM tunnel production to assist us with meeting our personnel needs.’ An inside view of the Port Said site in Egypt. The picture was taken on a lovely sunny morning. Palle: ‘I started on the Port Said project last January in the position of Tunnel Boring Machine Pilot. In this position I am responsible for controlling the operating parameters of the entire machine, including the steering, to meet the guidance targets. Our tolerances for steering are measured in millimeters and in general we keep the TBM within 5 millimeters of the desired position, which is a very small measurement compared to the size of the TBM. As we advance the TBM through mainly limestone and sand, geology segments are installed to prevent collapse and water ingress. Being part of such a prestigious project makes me feel proud, helping create these tunnels for the ben- efit of the hard-working Egyptian people. Knowing that I am helping to create something that will last for hundreds of years gives me immense satisfac- tion at the end of each day. When I’m not working it’s incredible to watch the very large vessels which use the Suez Canal, steam majestically along as though they are floating on the desert sands, quite a sight to behold.’ Stephan Fleischmann is Senior Project Manager of the complex project with state of the art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM’s) to create twin road traffic tunnels beneath the newly enlarged Suez Canal. His history with iPS started more than a decade ago in February 2006. At that time, he had never heard about iPS, but he was looking for a good job and the company was highly recommended by Boskalis. Dmitrij:‘The day after my applica- tion I was called by a consultant of the iPS Mari- time department asking me if I was interested in starting a job on the Heavy Lift Ves- sel Svanen, and I promptly agreed. At that moment I could not possibly have guessed that my cooperation with iPS would last so long. I started on board the Svanen as an Able Seaman, and rose over time to become the deck Bosun, proceeding to 3rd Officer. At this current mo- ment I’m 2nd Officer onboard and I am sure this is will not be the final step in my iPS Offshore career. The last 10 years my working life has been orientated around working in the European Offshore windfarm industry, which for me is a very interesting sector to work in. My first project with the HLV Svanen was at the windfarm near Egmond aan Zee, in the Netherlands. After finishing this project, we moved with the ves- sel on towards the Walney II project, Sheringham Shoal, Belwind, Anholt, London Array, Arumbank and other windfarm projects around the UK and Europe. One notable occurrence was in 2011, when there was a mistake with my visa to work in the UK sector, but to- gether with iPS I was able to find an option for me to join another vessel at short notice. I was pleased to keep working Offshore via iPS so I worked hard and portrayed a positive indi- cation to iPS. After this job a lot of different iPS crew would proceed me to go work onboard this cable lay vessel, which continues until today. Despite the nice work onboard the other cable lay vessel, I was glad to return to the HLV Svanen and with great pleasure I still enjoy working with my colleague seafarers on- board.’ ‘I could not possibly have guessed that my cooperation with iPS would last so long’ Dmitrij Korolev, 2nd Officer In the picture you can see the Svanen at work during the Walney Extension Wind Farm project. crew employed by Van Oord,I also took care of a flexible workforce. At times,Van Oord works with Baltic crew. The fact that iPS has an agency in Lithuania is very convenient. The agency recruits staff on the spot and does a lot of preparatory work.’ Projects of this kind require qualified crew, because placing wind turbines is precise work, says Christian.‘The staff must be able to do the right thing at the right time. Experience is at least as important as good qualifications. On this type of project, time pressure is high, often there is no time to work with inexperienced colleagues.Pro-activi- ty and safe working practices are paramount. For example, when hoisting equipment is moved, everyone on board must know;this requires experience.’ Meanwhile, the job has been completed, and the Svanen has already sailed on for work on the German Arkona Becken Südost offshore wind farm.Christian is back in his office at iPS,looking back on a wonderful time: ‘It was very pleasant and instructive to work on these projects in my opinion.’ Christian: ‘A staff change in Van Oord’s crewing depart- ment caused a lack of personnel. The department had so much work to do and it urgently needed someone who understood the requirements that the on-board crew had to meet. That’s how I got started there. As a crewing officer at Van Oord I was involved in the project and my job went beyond my Maritime Consultant position at iPS.I gained a lot of knowledge, which is very useful to provide iPS services even more efficiently. In close consultation with the captain,I scheduled the crew and made sure they were on board at the right time.Sometimes a crew member had to leave the ship at a moment’s notice because of,for example, urgent family reasons. That’s a stressful moment because it requires a replacement to be arranged quickly.‘ Svanen works within the Offshore Wind Pool,as do the ships Aeolus and Nexus, for which Christian has also recruited and planned personnel.Svanen was purchased by Van Oord and converted in 2014,making it suitable for driving the piles for the foundation of wind turbines. The Aeolus is also used for the transition of pieces and the construction of the wind turbines themselves. The Nexus is used for laying the cables on the seabed between wind turbines. Christian: ‘In addition to taking care of the permanent iPS consultant Christian Aarnoudse was assigned to the Van Oord dredging company for five months. At Van Oord, he scheduled staff for Svanen, a floating crane that at the time was being used for the construction of the Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm, located in the British Isles. Boudewijn Blatter,iPS Manager Middle East, directs the office in Dubai and tells us how a small assignment grew bigger. Boudewijn: ‘For MAC,we provide complete crew manage- ment:we supply the entire HR track, from crew recruit- ment and payrolling to coordinating the logistics of the crew.MAC contracted us because it wanted to organise the crewing more professionally and according to Euro- pean standards. It started with a few crew members on one ship but now we are responsible for organising this for all six ships. At iPS,we have an advanced IT system that gives all colleagues around the world access to the same candidates and enables us to act quickly. There are always about fifteen men on board of each ship. For MAC,we were looking for engineers, captains, deck staff and sailors. The variety of positions was and is great. The officers are mainly from Eastern Europe and the ratings from Asia, which brings a mix of cultures on board. The pressure to get everyone on board in time, with the right experience and papers,is often great’,says Boude- wijn. The ships have a‘minimum safe manning’to ensure safe working conditions.Boudewijn: ‘MAC specialises in offshore projects. They sail with DP2 Platform Supply Vessels, for a variety of clients in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.MAC offers technical support for drilling and diving operations,as well as logistical support when it comes to supplying drilling rigs.’ Boudewijn tells us how business in the Middle East differs from the European market and that it’s very price-driven. ‘It is up to you as a supplier to decide how far you want to go.Then it turns out that we’re not the cheapest. However,if a company wants to go for quality and transparent payrolling, they will come to us.We are rather stubborn, and stick to our vision of good employment practices and European values. Many companies inquire and go for the cheapest supplier. We do things in a differ- ent way,we act as partner. We want to help companies by focussing on the issue instead of just delivering. We investigate the problem a company faces and we offer possible solutions based on that. That’s why we keep a close eye on how the market develops,so we can deliver the right people quickly.‘ From left to right: Melike Durmaz, Patrick van Tijn and Boudewijn Blatter. • 16. 30 31 Being successful for thirty years, in a constantly changing market, with new challenges coming up again and again: how do you do it? Today, the iPS’ Directors team consists of Rob Kooijmans and Hans van Burk. They lead the company with great passion. A candid conversation about the power of iPS. Both men spend time abroad regularly, visiting iPS branches worldwide, but also shaping partnerships with current and new clients. At the company headquarters in Capelle aan den IJssel, there is time for an encounter and a stroll. To get straight to the point: what makes iPS so successful? ‘As a company, we work in an intermediary sector, serving both clients and profession- als, so our mission and vision is focused on both parties. That process must be well balanced. As far as the client is concerned, we are not just suppliers, but above all; partners. You have to understand what the client’s challenge is: what is the reason he needs staff, what is the issue? You become a partner by working with the client in a solution-oriented way. In other words: we focus on troubleshooting rather than shift- ing around people. We’re constantly look- ing in the market for players to work with, and subsequently become their exclusive preferred supplier. In this process we are a sparring partner, and that’s our strength.’ Why do clients choose to work with iPS? ‘Clients select us exclusively, in part because of the specialist experience of the professionals we recruit, the exten- sive possibilities for payrolling we offer, but also because of our compliance: we operate internationally in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. We know which possibilities there are and we’re able to apply them quickly and put them into effect. And iPS is also appreciated for its transparency regarding our fees. It’s crystal clear how wage costs, insurances and fees are calculated; there are no misunderstand- ings about this.’ Why do professionals like to work for iPS? Our professionals are experienced and have the required professional knowledge. We like to give them the opportunity to add to their careers by participating in prestigious projects, in an often interesting geograph- ical area. It’s usually a great opportunity to live and work abroad for a while. iPS is known for being a company that practices ‘iPS is known as a company that practices what it preaches’ what it preaches in terms of compensation and we provide good employee benefits: wherever you’re employed, you’re paid on time and you’re well insured. The trick is to retain staff, even at times when no work is available. We actively exchange ideas about career prospects and invest in training and education. Our staff in the office needs to have a cer- tain eagerness, it needs to know how to get things done, have a commercial spirit, but it also must be meticulous. As far as recruit- ment and selection is concerned, we always need to work from two perspectives: one is to recruit a good candidate, and the other one is the client: he must be interested in that person as well. If one of them needs time to reconsider, you’re two steps back in the process.’ That iPS feeling, can you describe it? ‘iPS People like to jump onto the custom- er’s problem, act quickly, and enter into a partnership with the client. We are really very proud of our consultants. They want to act to relieve clients of their worries, to solve problems. Clients keep coming back to us for that. If a customer has a problem, we immediately call on the people who can solve it. We analyze and investigate as to what can be done better. We are truly a self-learning organization. This mentality can be found to the same extent in our back office, who prepares all the necessary documents in time, with exactly the same drive.’ As members of the board you fly all across the globe. Are you in charge 24/7? ‘We visit the various entities and offices, provide support to our people, and we visit clients, trade fairs, governments and networks. It is good to show your face regu- larly and look each other in the eyes; that’s the best way to safeguard our iPS company culture. Rob is primarily a sparring partner for all back office managers. There are two dimen- sions to this: we are well informed about what is happening and they have someone peering over their shoulders. Hans focuses primarily on business relationships. Sure, we’re working long weeks. But we are also free to do what we do. Work hard, play hard. If you start feeling that you have to work hard and work many hours you will become unhappy. So we are always aware of finding the right balance.’ Has the market changed compared to some years ago? ‘The financial crisis has led us to expand into other markets. Some of our traditional markets declined, and it seemed it would take some time for those markets to recov- Hans van Burk
  • 17. Rob Kooijmans 32 33 er. We have started serving a wider market and expanded geographically, and we were able to deploy our professionals to several new locations. Our clients also went looking for neighbor- ing markets. It is important to follow what they do and engage in dialogue, to engage in the process at an early stage. There are many developments around the world that we critically monitor. When oil or gas is be- ing searched for in a particular region and no ports exist in that region, you know that at some stage partners will be sought to help build them. We can organize that. An- other example is the oil market in Mexico, which has become more privately owned. The first employees will be needed there in 2019, and we are already working on that. When the price of oil recently plummet- ed, we noticed that plenty of work was available on the downstream side, because refineries continue to operate. We have developed a turnaround concept, which now we’re also offering to the international market. We offer comprehensive project teams that are well attuned to each other. The way we offer cross-border payrolling is unique, as a result of which we’re able to provide an interesting offer to highly educated professionals. They like to work for iPS and increasingly do so.’ What are you planning for the future? ‘We continue to look for segments that bor- der on what we already do, to ensure that our people are broadly and flexibly employ- able. Take the example of the turnaround concept. Those working in the upstream oil and gas segment can do the same thing in the process industry and engineering mar- ket. We critically monitor whether or not we’re present on the right locations. We anticipate developments at an early stage. For example: more and more ships are sailing on LPG. So you need people who can deal with that. We will soon have those people. We are anticipating this imminent scarcity. As far as the segments are concerned, many things are about to happen. We have mapped all wind energy projects until 2023. We know who the players are. But competition is fierce. There is also a lot to do in the civil-engi- neering market worldwide, especially in tunnelling. There are fewer players in that market, and we are known for our exper- tise and problem-solving approach.’ What are you really proud of? ‘We’ve come up with a lot of ideas that work out well. That really gives us a thrill. It’s so much fun when a concept generates drive and enthusiasm among our people. Of course, we are also proud of the industry and the projects we work at. Knowing that one hundred and fifty of us are participat- ing, for example, in the Suez Canal project, in the London metro tunnel or the Westerschelde tunnel projects make us proud. These projects are items in the news and in documentaries, producing beautiful images that speak for themselves.’ ‘Ideas that work out well, really give us a thrill’ ‘We critically monitor if we’re present on the right locations’

South Africa: iPS and SFG celebrate 10 years of working together In the last two years iPS has opened four new offices. The HQ in Capelle aan den IJssel moved a few blocks and there were also office moves in The Hague,Mexico and South Africa. ANOTHER OFFICE! From left to right: Gino Bloys, Rob Kooijmans, Dovan Daniels, Hans van Burk 44.2 million people are working in Germa- ny at this moment. It has never been more. But according to the Basel based research institute Prognos already in 2030 there will be a need of 3 million qualified personnel. In 2040 this will even increase to 3.3 million professionals. We see this bottleneck already today. Our clients are mostly positive in regards to the next year(s) but see a challenge in finding the suita- ble personnel. That’s where we can support, not only in Germany but also worldwide. We started an office in 2016 with Simon Schumacher as the Business Development Manager. We have been involved in the construction of all German Offshore Wind farm projects in 2016 and also in the Maritime sector - the heart of iPS - we have been very busy. Besides that we developed a new Business Area with our professionals for the asset integrity sector in the process industry. Our team in the Hamburg Based office is growing! With major growth in Germany iPS set up office in Germany Patrick Mans is Commercial Operations Manager at iPS and responsible for bring- ing strategy into practice. One of the ways in which he does this is by giving guidance to the managers who, together with their staff, receive and address requests from clients and the Sales department. ‘My main role is to guide the Processes’, says Patrick. Patrick:‘I stimulate proactivity and I make sure that our success ranking is as high as possible. We get many ad hoc questions which should preferably be resolved that day. It will be too late to start looking for the right people at the end of the day so we focus on creating pools to be able to provide a shortlist of suitable candidates at the right time and at the appropriate pace.To do that right, the iPS spirit is very useful:We observe closely and react rapidly. And, if necessary, with a little bit of aggression. Knowing that sometimes half an hour can make the difference.’ Patrick studied Tax and Business Economics and got in touch with iPS more than six years ago. ‘To me,it was a completely new industry, which turned out to be extremely dynamic, and iPS is a very good employer. The expertise needed in cross-border payrolling was highly appealing to me.The owners of iPS had already put this con- cept in the market properly. It requires knowl- edge that cannot be learned in an education programme. You must learn by working in the ‘Our knowledge about cross-border payrolling is our unique selling point’ Exclusive supplier iPS will increasingly operate on long-term customer contracts, not only focused on pro- viding staff, but above all, acting as a partner to jointly solve the issues covered by the agreement. Of course, clients can also work with other companies, but iPS strives to be their exclusive supplier. White collar iPS will continue to supply all common crew positions, but it will increasingly focus on the white-collar staff, who are preferably transferred from one project to another and hence committed to iPS.With its focus on white-collar positions, iPS also wants to focus increasingly on filling permanent positions with our clients. Wind energy Wind energy is an internationally booming business. There is a strong need for technical personnel in the wind industry. Now,and in the years to come. Decommissioning Over the next thirty or forty years there will be many offshore platforms and other installations that need to be dismantled, also known as decommissioning. It is expected that iPS will provide staff for this specialized kind of work. Total peace of mind For many companies,cross-border payrolling is a complex matter.Companies will increasingly choose iPS to make their lives easier so they can fully focus on their business. Trends for 2018 -2020 according to Patrick Mans field of cross-border payrolling.Throughout the world,we make use of MSF and the expertise we have built up,unique tools that provide answers to 75% of the questions at stake.’ With lawyer Gertjan de Mare, Patrick is also an expert and often the living encyclopaedia for colleagues. That undoubtedly requires keeping track of the latest knowledge in the profession.‘I like that, it even gives me energy. I usually use my time travelling to our foreign offices to enhance my knowledge and skills. Our knowledge about cross-border payrolling is our unique selling point. We all need to be fully aware of that.‘
  • 19. iPS BALTICS CREW FOR CRUISE SHIPS CREW FOR CRUISE SHIPS 36 37 Crossing bordersiPS has many Powerful People working at its offices around the globe. We celebrate our multicultural DNA. We introduce four of our consultants who live and work in different countries than the country in which they were born. What made them go there? What are the differences they experience? Read their stories. In March 2018 General Crewing marks four years of cooperation with iPS. Those 4 years of cooperation lead to steady inte- gration with iPS, growing our businesses together towards one iPS, and becoming iPS Baltics. Since the very beginning in 2014 we expanded our database and our capabilities to find the right people for the job.Currently our database expands to more than fifteen thousand candi- dates that come from all over the world, but the core is in our base, the Baltic states. In addition to the growing database we have expanded our services bit by bit, providing not only crewing, but also document management training and payroll, but also becoming the only Marlins training center in Lithuania.iPS Baltics is one of the few IMIST approved by OPITO invig- ilation centers in the Baltics. Our biggest dedica- tion, however, during those years was to create a service that would cover all of these parts. We achieved this by providing the service to our main partner,iPS,and that laid the framework to provide it to other businesses. During the years we have provided people to Maritime,Oil and Gas and Wind Energy sectors, but we are not stopping there. We are always seeking rapidly expanding markets and we offer solutions that will support their growth. In September 2017 we made the first firm step into the Cruise industry by participating in the Seatrade Europe Exhibition where we present- ed the full range of services of iPS powerful people. This spring will be a new beginning: then our people will start working on cruise vessels. All of this has been achieved by Gen- eral Crewing;iPS’Baltics team. The day at the office may starts quietly and calm, but this qui- etness may change into a busy day of client’s requests at any moment, and that is where our team strives the most. By providing the best service, pushing ourselves further for all our clients, paying attention to our candidates, listening to both sides, becoming a part of and having the support of the global iPS family we can expand and grow with dedica- tion and integrity. This will allow us to achieve not only growth but also brand knowledge. We will have the satisfaction of knowing that the clients trust us to provide the people that they need at the crucial moment. iPS and General Crewing: growing business together
  • 20. 38 39 Name: Louise Langholm Collé Location: The Netherlands Position: Tunnelling & Civil Consultant Origin: Denmark 1 How long have you been working in the Netherlands? I came to the Netherlands in 2003 for my Dutch husband, who I met as a travel guide in Greece. After we met we travelled around the world. An unforgettable experience! In 2010 I returned to the Netherlands and I have been working at iPS since 2011. 2 What do you do for iPS? I’m a Tunnelling Consultant, and I am special- ized in providing the right people for large projects around the world. I have a lot of contact with our clients. As a result, I know even better what kind of people they need at every stage of a project. My son, however, de- scribed it in the best possible way at school the other day:‘My mom builds tunnels with powerful people.’I think that is a nice way to say it. 3 What are the biggest differences between Denmark and the Netherlands? The Netherlands is truly a multicultural coun- try. I like that, because it works very well. Haha, another big difference is the way you eat herring. In both countries we eat it a lot, but you do it in a bit of a strange way. 4 What do you miss most from Denmark? My family and friends, but also our many traditions! For example, during Christmas we walk around the Christmas tree singing and in the whole country we eat the same dessert (risalamande). I also miss my country’s space and tranquillity. In Denmark, life is slower and we spend a lot of time outside the house. Prams are parked outside with sleeping babies in them, even in shopping streets. You cannot imagine that happening here, but in Denmark it’s very common. 5 Was it hard to integrate (into Dutch society)? More difficult than I expected. I will never stop integrating. Except during King’s Day, then we are all orange! 6 Tell us something about the clothes you wear. My Danish father turned 60 and for the party I bought this dress with a typical Dutch pat- tern. Of course, they had to laugh a lot when they saw me. Name: Melike Durmaz Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates Position: Business Manager Middle East Origin: The Netherlands 1. How long have you been working in Dubai? I have been in Dubai for six months now. I have been a global traveller since my childhood. I love my freedom and working here is a great opportunity. 2. What do you do for iPS? I always call myself a ‘professional coffee drinker’ haha, but officially I’m Business Manager, Middle East. I am responsible for business development throughout the Middle East. 3. What are the biggest differences between Dubai and the Netherlands? Everything is possible in Dubai! You can ski in a shopping mall in the hot desert, which is a bizarre idea of course. Just imagine something and it’s here in Dubai, and if not, it will definitely be here soon. In business, Dutch people draw rather hasty conclusions, while the Emirati takes a friendly detour. Politeness and trust are extremely important. Another interesting difference is the fact that here we work from Sunday ‘til Thursday, as opposed to Monday ‘til Friday in the Netherlands. 4. What do you miss the most about the Netherlands? Drinking water from the tap. However, I have lived here only for a short time, too short to really miss anything about the Netherlands. 5. Was it hard to integrate? No, not really. Dubai is very hospitable and polite. Perhaps it’s easy to integrate because of the large international community. They know what it’s like to be new here. I was immediately invited by people for dinner and drinks, very nice! 6. Tell us about what you’re holding in your hands. I’m holding a hookah, but I wonder if this symbolizes Dubai. Hospitality and wanting to be the best in what they do is what really characterizes Emirati.
  • 21. 4140 Name: Guido van der Zwet Location: Mexico Function: Manager Americas Origin: The Netherlands 1 How long have you been working in Mexico? I came to Mexico in 2006 to write my the- sis. I fell in love and never went back to the Netherlands again. I have been working at iPS since 2013. 2 What do you do for iPS? I am the manager of Americas, and respon- sible for the two locations in Mexico. We deliver people and solutions from Alaska to Argentina. In addition, I am a co-found- er of the Dutch Energy Association, a non-profit organization that actively stim- ulates cooperation between Mexico and the Netherlands in the energy sector. 3 What are the biggest differences between Mexico and the Netherlands? In the Netherlands we are always talking about the weather, haha! In Mexico we talk about food, because that is the most im- portant thing. Doing business is also very different. In Mexico, you must first work on the relationship and goodwill. We have other Ps here: Presence, People and Patience. As a result-oriented, fast-working Dutchman, you have to get used to that. 4 What do you miss most about The Netherlands? My family, of course, but also‘snert’ (traditional Dutch pea soup) and croquettes. 5 Was it difficult to integrate into the Mexican culture? No. It surprised me how open, friendly and welcoming Mexicans are to foreign- ers. Mi casa es tu casa, it’s really like that. Mexicans are very proud people, you must be aware of that. Speak the language and adapt but stay yourself. 6 Tell us about what you’re wearing. This is a poncho. Actually, I don’t like it very much because this is part of the stereotypical picture that everyone has of Mexico. We must get rid of that image. Mexico is a beautiful and complete country that is developing in a special way. I’m a proud Mexican and a proud Dutchman. Name: Alevtina Mos - Vishnevskaya Location: The Netherlands Position: Consultant Energy Origin: Russia 1 How long have you been working in the Netherlands? In April 2012 I came to the Netherlands for my husband. I met him when he was working at a gas project on Sakhalin, a Russian island just north of Japan. That is where I’m from. Three months after I arrived in the Nether- lands I started working at iPS. 2 What do you do for iPS? I’m a Consultant Energy. My expertise is find- ing white collar staff for our clients. In my role I support all industries for which iPS provides staff. It’s an amazing job! 3 What are the biggest differences between the Netherlands and Russia? Haha, I think the Dutch invented the agen- da! You guys plan things so far ahead that meeting someone to drink a cup of coffee ‘spontaneously’has to be planned 3 weeks in advance. In Russia, you just call and drink coffee that same afternoon. Oh, and riding a bike and the skills Dutch people have doing that, it’s incredible to see! You won’t believe your eyes watching business people in their tight suits, riding a bike and making a phone call at the same time, or carrier bikes with car seats on them! 4 What do you miss most about Russia? The Russian language is what I miss most. Being able to say something exactly the way you want to, without the filter of translation. And, of course, I miss my friends and family. 5 Was it hard to integrate into Dutch society? To be allowed to come to the Netherlands I had to take an exam on the internet. After three years I had to take my civic integration exam in order to be allowed to stay. I wanted more and took the exam at a higher level. The Dutch welcomed me with open arms, they are very open and friendly people. 6 Tell us about what you’re holding in your hands. Tulips are, of course, a typical Dutch symbol. It’s very funny: in Russia we have a bad song which says that when a man gives you yellow tulips, the relationship will end.

  • 23. 44 45 Sharing means growthThey meet at the Dredging Museum in thetownofSliedrecht, where the dredging industry was born. Leo Oostendorp and Theo Wanders, iPS founders and owners, are clearly enjoying themselves. The model ships, photos and paintings on display loosen their tongues and stories are told. A perfect atmosphere for a retrospective look at iPS’ past. T hey met for the first time at a job in Bahrain, about 43 years ago. Oostendorp was a technical in- spector, Wanders a construction engineer working as an assistant accountant. Even though they regularly changed jobs, clients and countries, they kept running into each other. The moment Zanen Ver- stoep and Boskalis decided to join forces and, in doing so, cleaned up the dredging industry about 30 years ago, Wanders and Oostendorp asked each other: ‘Do we sell ourselves to the market or do we start a business of our own?’ That was when they founded iPS. 100,000 guilders At that time, Theo Wanders had gained a great deal of experience as head of human resources, and Leo Oostendorp knew all about technology. It was obvi- ous they’d start a company specializing in recruitment and selection. ‘We both put 100,000 guilders of our own money and rented an office in Leiden. It went well right from the start. We had an extensive network of qualified people. ‘Noor knew exactly what type of person would suit iPS’ At that time, the dredging industry was in bad shape, many people were made redundant. We outsourced many of them to jobs in the shipping, civil and offshore industries, from a single person to a complete team of staff. One thing led to the other. Initially, a request for a bridge builder would come in, but we ended up delivering an entire building team. We had the courage to mediate jobs particu- larly for highly qualified staff. They were desperately needed, for example for the construction of new ships. We organized logistics around jobs as well. That way, more work came our way and subse- quently a complete chain of services was created.’ Speak the language Wanders and Oostendorp started a subsidiary office in Capelle aan den IJssel, mainly because a large number of workers were available in that area and there was an increasing demand for the supply of fleet personnel. ‘We smelled the opportunities and took care of the niches. The companies we worked for knew us and granted us the business. We spoke the language of our clients. That, and the fact that we knew the market and the people qualified for the job, gave us an advantage over our competitors’. How things went in the past According to Wanders and Oostendorp, finding the right people used to be different from how it is now. ‘Email and WhatsApp didn’t exist; we called can- didates after 5 PM, so they were free to talk. When they arrived at the office for an interview, our secretary Noor gave the candidate a cup of coffee in the waiting room. She would shake her head in pity if she believed it wasn’t a suitable candi- date. She was right most of the time. She knew exactly what type of person would suit iPS’ clients: no pretence, no attitude, down-to-earth, a go-getter. You immedi- ately noticed whether a candidate would hit the ground running, even though he had no diplomas. The trick was to convince a client he would be taking in a guy with character. Nowadays you can’t get to a job without a diploma, times have really changed.’ ‘Perhaps we are old-style entrepreneurs’, say Oostendorp and Wanders. ‘We believe that a real entrepreneur does business using his own money, not a loan from the bank. We could work with many companies that do not have their own money. They borrow money and can Theo Wanders
  • 24. 46 47 only pay the bill in six months’ time. We don’t want that. We do offer payrolling, but only to financially sound companies.’ Segments The segments in which iPS now operates have grown almost organically. ‘Oppor- tunities always just crossed our path. For example: we’d hired someone who knew someone who was building the tunnel between Terneuzen and Vlissin- gen. It turned out the joint venture of the project had a problem rewarding the tunnel workers employed on the pro- ject. We took on some of the workmen. Eventually we delivered a complete team of tunnel workers for the construction of a tunnel under the Pannerdensch canal. Our people knew the machines and because of that they ended up working on a tunnel project in Sweden, and that way business expanded. The same thing happened in the Wind Energy market. The vessel we provided the crew for was given a contract to build windmills. For us, this was a niche that we took on with both hands. The essence is: Taking the burden away from the client‘. Pride Wanders and Oostendorp are proud to have started a business that is still viable after 30 years. They have grown without the need for bank loans and not by just focusing on profit. ‘We have created a company people like to work for. Of course, we know that money must be made in the end. But iPS is about human value, about socially-motivated entre- preneurship. That’s what we consider important.’ The owners of iPS are credited for their modesty. ‘At the time, we were very happy with our small, 70 square meter office. We have always believed in being modest, to not stand out from the crowd, and doing the job as reliably as we can. Many people like to tell you about how good they are. Appearing to be interested in another person often turns out to be self-interest. It’s a way of doing things that doesn’t work for us, but of course we also know that it’s important to show what we‘re doing’. Partners For Wanders and Oostendorp partnership speaks for itself. ‘Our secret? Granting each other an opportunity and knowing you can’t do it all by yourself. Allowing each other the space one needs and respecting each other’s expertise. Most of all it’s our ability to share. If you work together well, you can multiply your business and earn good money. We know for a fact that sharing is growing.’ The future Oostendorp and Wanders have now both retired. But this does not mean they’re no longer involved with iPS. ‘Men of our age often do different things than we do now. They play golf, watch TV, they’re busy with their children and grandchil- dren. We both do not have children, so we have time to spare. We still enjoy being active in our profession, however, we have a different way of putting the concept of ownership into practice. We see fellow professionals, visit trade fairs, we watch, we talk, we hear about new developments, which we sometimes pass on to management. That’s something we enjoy. When we’re on the road we never see each other, as we’re always busy with other people. We go out and talk to the right people, just like we’ve always done in a straightforward manner. We are still the owners of a beautiful company. We would like to keep it that way. And we are certainly going to celebrate the company’s thirtieth anniversary. How? Certification: ISO 27001 The ISO/IEC 27000 family of standards helps organizations keep information assets secure.Using this family of stand- ards will help your organization manage the security of assets such as financial information, intellectual property,employ- ee details or information entrusted to you by third parties.ISO/IEC 27001 is the best- known standard in the family providing requirements for the information security management system (ISMS). Certification to ISO/IEC 27001 is possible but not obligatory. Some organizations choose to implement the standard in or- der to benefit from the best practice, while others decide they want to get certified to reassure clients and clients its recommen- dations have been followed. More information? g.demare@iPSpowerfulpeople.com Jeffrey Nouwen Gertjan de Mare QHSE stands for Quality,Health,Safety and Environment.A broad area that focuses on improving business pro- cesses and increasing customer satisfaction. The fact that QHSE are mentioned together has to do with the quality standards and certification which apply to all components and sometimes overlap.Jeffrey: ‘It’s not just about complying with the law,it’s about the constant desire to improve. At IPS we’re really good at that. Jeffrey’s work largely consists of conducting re- search, measuring customer satisfaction,meas- uring risks and measuring efficiency.Jeffrey: ‘Monitoring customer satisfaction always pro- vides points for improvement when it comes to efficiency, cost savings, simplifying working methods and adapting systems. We also con- duct internal audits. If there is an incident or a bottleneck,a thorough analysis is carried out. Of course, even more important is preventing these things from happening.Prevention is an important part of my work.’ The H and E refer to occupational health and safety policy. It’s about the way you are sitting behind your desk, right up to the safety of iPS personnel on board.Do they have good work equipment, safe clothing? What risks are they exposed to and how is safety guaranteed?’ Jeffrey: ‘28 days after employment there is a safety check and again at the end of the job.We don’t do this just because of the certification. It is mainly for identifying risks and improving our services.’ Jeffrey makes sure he is well informed about QHSE worldwide. All branches have iPS staff working within this area and occasionally he visits all branch offices.‘Through personal con- tact I am able to identify problems even better. It’s hard work and long hours meeting as many people as possible but you won’t hear me com- plaining:iPS is a great company to work for!’ QHSE and the constant desire to improve Jeffrey Nouwen is the QHSE officer of iPS. His mission: safe and healthy working conditions, compliance with the law, as well as ensuring support for QHSE among his colleagues. Jeffrey: ‘Constantly asking “why” helps to improve quality.’ He is not only the lawyer setting the framework for all contracts and checking them against international legislation and regulations, but he is also respon- sible for privacy. ‘It’s a hot item’, says lawyer Gertjan de Mare. ‘If your privacy is not well-managed, then fines can run into the millions.’ Acopy of a passport,a Citizen Service Number or a Visa request:you send it by email, and it crosses networks on the internet. With a bit of bad luck, information is lost or gets into the wrong hands.Since current legislation is no longer fully compatible with the digital world,a new European privacy regulation guaranteeing the protection of per- sonal data has been adopted:The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),which will come into force in May 2018. iPS has multiple offices in Europe and needs to share sensitive information privately worldwide. Therefore,iPS invests heavily in protective measures.Gertjan de Mare has been appoint- ed Data Protection Officer. ‘We consider it important to properly regulate the protection of personal data before the GDPR comes into force. If you wait to regulate it at the moment the GDPR comes into force you’re too late. That is why we are currently in the process of obtain- ing ISO 27001 certification. With the ISO 27001 certification, you show that as an organization you have regulated the protection of privacy and sensitive information. In 2018 we will be au- dited under this certification. In order to comply with the ISO 9001 2015 standard,we will con- tinue to audit ourselves.Doing so we complete the chain not just within the organization, but also with the stakeholders as our suppliers must also have solid privacy policies. It’s very important that our own employees know the rules well and apply them correctly. That is why we train them, develop work processes and put authorizations in place.’ As a Data Protection Officer,Gertjan and a team of specialists closely monitor the evolution of privacy: ‘These are issues that have not yet fully matured. We have to conduct continuous research and remain well-informed but also de- velop our own opinions. Now I am in an adviso- ry role whilst we are setting the framework but in 2018 I will be monitoring and taking action as well.Without this,we cannot be accountable to the Data Protection Authority. At iPS,we have drawn up a code of conduct that has to be applied worldwide. It explains the purpose and principles for processing personal data, how we deal with it and how they can be influenced.’ Privacy is hot

The technical aspect is intriguing ‘The combination of helping people and commerce, that’s what I find interesting’,says Diandra,‘I love to organize things well and quickly. Before I started working for iPS,I worked in the temporary employment industry, where I took care of staff at production level.I’d never thought that I would work at iPS serving this niche, the technical sector. This job suits me very well. If you’re not familiar with this job, many aspects of it are quite inconceivable. There are process- es which one usually doesn’t think of.That’s why this technical world in which iPS operates intrigues me.It’s a very specific industry. I always want to know how something is made and what is involved in a production process.I learned a lot about it in a short time, especially because both clients and candidates are willing to talk about their work. What strikes me is that the people working in this area are extremely passionate and that’s contagious. The human aspect of my work fascinates me. I am well aware that our candidates are often away from home for a long time and leave their families behind.Understanding that fact is at least as important as getting a good match. That kind of consideration is always present at iPS.Working for this company is really extremely satisfying.’ The process Diandra: ‘Each project for which we are looking for people is different.A suitable Curriculum Vi- tae doesn’t say it all.During an intake or inven- tory, you make an in-depth analysis in order to be able to translate the ideas into practice. This way you discover what needs there are,and you keep learning. While working together with my colleagues I continue to develop myself. Using my intuition and experience,I can operate quickly and decide which way to go in order to achieve a successful placement. ‘It’s great to work for both the candidate and the customer.Sometimes there is some doubt with one party and there may be a need to have more information to get a match,or to keep on looking for other candidates.Once there’s a match,we pay a lot of attention to af- tercare and we check whether both candidate and client are satisfied. Euphoria ‘Whatever the point of departure, our goal is to unburden the customer. If there is a good match, our mission has been successful.Of course, there is a sense of euphoria at that mo- ment. But the real work starts on two sides, with the client and candidate. It’s about understand- ing the needs that exist in order to fulfil the advisory role and resolve the situation. We are transparent and provide updates and insight into the ongoing processes. That is where our strength lies.’ ‘Our goal is to unburden’ Choose your profession!Choose your profession!
