The IPC framework was used for the first time in Kenya to conduct the 2006/7 Short Rains food security assessment at the national level. Data was collected using standard methods and analyzed by a cross-ministry team with support from international organizations. Since then, capacity building efforts have focused on training national and district staff on IPC and assessment methodology to gradually expand its use and improve data collection tools.

2. Overview
The IPC was used as an analytical framework for the 2006/7
Short Rains Assessment for the first time in Kenya.
The IPC framework was applied at the national level only,
using the data collected in the field during the assessment
and from a variety of secondary sources (especially the
ALRMP EW bulletins).
The data collection instruments and sampling methodology
followed that established by previous assessments.
The IPC framework was used primarily for developing a
strong, evidence-based and transparent situation analysis at
the national level.
3. Overview cont…
The analysis team composed of members from a cross section
of line ministries (MoA, MoLD, MoWI, MoH & MoE) with
technical support from FAO, WFP/VAM and FEWSNet.
4. Progress made…..
Since its inception, KFSSG embarked on capacity development
for staff from the key sectors both National and district level.
In 2008 LRA, KFSSG involved selected officers from the
districts in IPC development and lessons learnt.
Subsequently, every assessments has involved selected
sectoral representatives from the districts(2 per cluster).
Based on IPC data requirement, the KFSSG has been revising
data collection templates for every assessment.
In 2010, KFSSG trained 200 sectoral representatives from the
districts on IPC and Food security assessment methodology
