 Users had 2 cables on desk, one for phone and one for computer (LAN cable)
 All phones, analogue and digital were wired back to the associated extension PBX card
 All PSTN, ISDN trunks were wired directly to a trunk card in the PBX
 If the phone or fax had to be moved to another location then a tech had to re-jumper the
phone
 If a new phone was required and there is no spare slot on the relevant card, then a new
card and/or chassis was required
▫ Hence PBX could take up more physical space, hence, associated power increases etc
Traditional telephony (before IP)

 The great thing about NEC systems is that they support both IP and traditional systems
▫ They can be Hybrid, unlike Cisco that only supports IP
 For small businesses upgrading internal networks/systems to support IP can be
expensive
 However, Selling an IP solution is potentially a great way to increase the value
of the sale

 Terminologies
▫ Switch
– allows the connection of a number of devices to the network, such as:
– IP Terminals
– IP DECT access points
– PC’s
– Servers
– Known as a Ethernet hub, typically comes in 4,8,16,32,64,128 Ethernet ports sizes
– Allows formation of VLANs (virtual LANs)
– Allows broadcasting
– Separates systems with sensitive data or different data types (eg Voice & Data)
– Allows for groups (nodes) to be formed, e.g. sales, accounts
▫ Router
– Primary role is to connect networks together and hence moves data between other networks forming WANs
– Allows connection to Public networks , such as, IP networks (WWW), Public IP Carrier, private networks
