The Role of Taxonomy and Ontology in Semantic Layers - Heather Hedden.pdf
Introduction to the TAO Uct Sig, a team working on computational intelligence, part of the TAO team
1. SOME RESEARCH IN TAO-UCTSIG

2. Tao (Inria, Cnrs, Lri, Paris-Sud)
People:
Permanent staff: 11
~22 ph.D. studs/post-docs
In Université Paris-Sud
Largest campus in France
Faculty of sciences: mathematics, computer science,
physics, chemistry, biology, earth and space
sciences ==> 12000 students
Inria affiliation:
> 50 years old
Devoted to research in comp. science
3. TAO-UCTSIG
One of the SIG (Special Interest Groups) of TAO.
I am responsible of the TAO UCT SIG.
We work on artificial intelligence.
4. WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE ?
PROBLEMS IN WHICH COMPUTERS MAKE
DECISIONS.
IN PARTICULAR PROBLEMS FOR WHICH
HUMANS ARE BETTER THAN COMPUTERS.
What we do:
MATHS
CHALLENGES (GAMES)
IMPORTANT APPLICATIONS

INTELLIGENCE ?

DECISIONS.
IN PARTICULAR PROBLEMS FOR WHICH
HUMANS ARE BETTER THAN COMPUTERS.
What we do: TODAY WE MUST HAVE FUN.
MATHS SO I REMOVE MATHS.
CHALLENGES (GAMES)
IMPORTANT APPLICATIONS

IMPORTANT APPLICATIONS ALSO THIS.
9. Robot Arm
One of our applications: trying to control this
robot for learning from trial & error.
We have
competitions
of robot
arm control.
Join :-)
10. POKEMONS
皮卡丘
Second most lucrative video
game.
Meta-gaming: choosing your deck.
11. POKEMON:
2 STEPS.
METAGAMING:
I have plenty of cards, I choose my deck.
INGAMING:
I have a deck, I play.
==> involves partial observability
==> nice mathematics
13. MINESWEEPER:
- WHO HAS NEVER PLAYED
MINESWEEPER ?
- STILL A CHALLENGE FOR
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
- SURPRISINGLY, THE BEST
MOVE IS NOT ALWAYS JUST
A MOVE WITH MINIMUM
PROBABILITY OF MINE.
14. GOOD NEWS: we had a
GAME OF GO lot of progress with
**generic** algorithms
(with Nutn) (algorithms which can be
used for many things).
The revolution in Go which
occurred in 2007-2009 is a
major breakthrough in
Artificial Intelligence.
We'll see that in details.
I am a little bit tired of the
game of Go, because I
have no recent progress,
and recent progress in the
community comes from Go
expertise, which is only
useful for Go...
15. Problem 2: Solving unsolved situations in Go
Now computers are much stronger than in the past.
However, they still
misunderstand some
trivial situations
(in particular,
liberty races).
You have an idea ?
Tell me :-)

21. WE WORK ON ONE OF THE MAIN
INDUSTRIES IN FRANCE.
FRANCE IS WELL KNOWN FOR:
POWER
PLANTS
Nuclear stuff
everywhere in France.
but you can come for tourism :-)
22. French energy company EDF:
- world’s largest utility company.
- 120,000+ megawatts in Europe,
Latin America, Asia,
the Middle-East and Africa.
- Controls companies in all
continents.
26. FRANCE ELECTRICITY:
CONSUMPTION
- Big consumption = winter.
- Yet, since the 2003 disaster
(Taiwan-like heat wave in summer,
15 000 died), air conditioning appears.
- We sell electricity in Europe
(will increase, due to Fukushima)
==> highly dependent on
(i) climate
(ii) economical conditions
27. EUROPE ELECTRICITY: FUTURE
- French electric grid
connected to many countries: how will
they evolve ?
- Avoid black-out (“domino” effect on grids) ?
- Will probably increase: more in Africa
(buying photo-voltaic, wind)
- No typhoon, no earthquake, no tsunami:
keeping nuclear power or not ?
- Electric cars
29. ANOTHER RISK: LACK OF WATER
(DROUGHT)
(nuclear power plants
cooled by water)
30. PLENTY OF IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
We have a lot of hydroelectricity.
Hydroelectricity
==> water = stock of energy.
Every day: can I use water now ?
Or should I keep it for later (winter) ?
Long term investments:
which plants should I build ?
31. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS
SOOOO GOOD.
NICE AND VISIBLE CHALLENGES IN GAMES
CRITICAL APPLICATIONS:
I had a lot of pleasure trying to make something
useful for my country around energy. When
you work on this, you know you work on
something important, as everyone needs
energy.
Which power plants should Taiwan build ?
How Taiwan should connect its electric grid to
other countries so that no partner suffers from
the connection ?
