Java is an object-oriented programming language and platform that was initially developed by Sun Microsystems in 1991 to develop software for consumer electronic devices and overcome limitations of other languages like C and C++. Java uses core object-oriented programming concepts like classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism and exception handling and is widely used today for applications like Android, web applications, mobile games, Hadoop and other mobile applications due to its portability, simplicity, security, and performance.
