2. DEFINITION:
Occlusion: The normal relation of the occlusal inclined
planes of the teeth when the jaws are closed .
Malocclusion:It is a misalignment or incorrect relation
between the teeth of two dental arches when they
approach each other as the jaws closed.
Classification of malocclusion:-
Advantaged:
1.Helps in diagnosis and treatment planning .
2.Helps in visualizing and understanding the problem
associated with that malocclusion.
3.Helps in communicating the problem .
4.Comparison of various malocclusion is made easy by
classification.
3. Types of malocclusion and their
terminologies:
Intra-arch malocclusions.
Inter-arch malocclusions.
Skeletal malocclusions.
1. Intra-arch malocclusions include :variation in
individual tooth position and malocclusion affecting a
group of teeth within an arch.
Distal inclination or distal tipping.
Mesial inclination .
Lingual inclination or retroclination.
Buccal inclination or proclination.
Mesial displacement .
Distal displacement.
Lingual displacement.
Buccal displacement.
4.
5. Rotations
Disto lingual or mesio buccal rotation
Mesio lingual or disto buccal rotation.
Transposition.
Supraversion.
Infraversion.
2. INTER-ARCH MALOCCLUSION:
These inter-arch malocclusion can occur in sagittal ,vertical
or the transverse plane.
1.Sagittal plane malocclusions : upper and the lower arches
are abnormally related to each other in a sagittal plane.
A.Prenormal occlusion: lower arch is more forwardly placed
when the patient bites in centric occlusion.
B.post normal occlusion: lower arch is more distally placed
when patient bites in centric occlusion.
7. 2. Vertical plane malocclusions:
Deep bite .(excessive vertical overlap b/w u n l anteriors)
Open bite.(no vertical overlap)
8. 3. Transverse plane malocclusion. It includes various
types of crossbite.
9. 3. SKELETAL MALOCCLUSION.
It is caused due to abnormalities in maxilla and mandible
. It can be in size, position,or relationship between the
jaws .it can also occur in 3planes i.e., sagittal, vertical n
transverse plane
In transverse plane theses skeletal malocclusion is
termed in terms ofcrossbite ..as narrow maxilla ...wide
mandible etc.,
In sagittal in termed of Retrognathism and Prognathism.
In vertical plane abnormal variations can be in affect to
the lower facial height.
