What is simple random sampling?
How to conduct simple
random sampling
• To conduct simple random sampling, you will
need a list of all the members of the population.
This list is called the sampling frame. Once you
have the sampling frame, you can use a random
number generator to select the members of
your sample.
• There are a number of different ways to
generate random numbers. You can use a table
of random numbers, a random number
generator on a computer, or even a dice roll.
Once you have generated a random number,
you can then select the corresponding member
of the population for your sample.
Example of simple
random sampling
• Suppose you want to conduct a survey of
students at your college. The population is
all the students at your college. You have a
list of all the students at your college,
which is your sampling frame.
• To select a random sample of students, you
could use a random number generator to
generate a list of random numbers. Each
random number would correspond to a
student on your sampling frame. You could
then select the students on your list to
include in your sample.
There are two main
types of simple
random sampling:
• Lottery method: This method is similar to
drawing names from a hat. Each member
of the population is assigned a number,
and then random numbers are drawn to
select the members of the sample.
• Random number method: This method
uses a random number generator to select
the members of the sample. Each member
of the population is assigned a number,
and then the random number generator is
used to generate a list of random
numbers. The members of the population
with the corresponding numbers are then
selected for the sample.
some examples of how to use each
type of simple random sampling:
Lottery method:
• Suppose you want to select a random sample
of 100 students from a college of 1000
students. You could write the name of each
student on a slip of paper and then put the
slips of paper in a hat. You would then draw
100 slips of paper from the hat to select your
sample.
Random number method:
Suppose you want to select a random sample of 100 students from a
college of 1000 students. You could use a random number generator
to generate a list of 100 random numbers between 1 and 1000. The
students with the corresponding student IDs would then be selected
for the sample.
It is important to note that both the lottery method and the random
number method produce unbiased samples, meaning that the
sample is representative of the population.
