Software is a general term for programs that operate computers and related devices, as opposed to hardware which describes physical aspects. Software gives users the ability to use computers to help with various tasks, however some users incorrectly believe they can freely copy software without permission, ignoring copyright and other laws. There are different types of software including operating systems, applications, and system software.

Software gives us the ability to use computers to help us deal with a variety
of tasks. To swiftly and comfortably overcome problems, many users
unfortunately believe they are allowed to freely use copies of software
without asking for the appropriate permissions and authorizations. They
obviously don’t recognize the implications of their actions and they ignore the
regulations of copyright, patent and criminal laws.
