SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Isuki San R. Meredor
Science Teacher Grade 10
Learning Objectives
• Define SEXUAL REPRODUCTION;
• Identify the most FUNDAMENTAL BIOLOGICAL
distinction between MALE and FEMALE; and
• Define PRIMARY SEX ORGANS, SECONDARY SEX
ORGANS, and SECONDARY SEX CHARACTERISTICS.
The Essence of Sex
•Note: Reproduction is one of the fundamental
properties of all living things. Many organisms
reproduce simply by FISSION (splitting in two)
or by BUDDING off miniature replicas of
themselves. These are ASEXUAL PROCESSES
that produce exact genetic copies of the
parent. Most organisms, however, reproduce
SEXUALLY.
• Sexual reproduction does not necessary entail copulation or
even physical contact between the parents
• The essence of sexual reproduction is that each offspring has
two parents and a combination of genes from both.
• The offspring are not genetically identical to their parents
and usually not even each other.
• Genetic diversity provides the foundation for the survival
and evolution of a species and has been such a substantial
advantage that it is employed by the great majority of
organisms.
The Essence of Sex
The Two Sexes
• GAMETES (Sex Cells)
• ZYGOTE (Fertilized Egg)
• TWO PROPERTIES OF GAMETES for a SUCCESSFUL REPRODUCTION
• 1. Motility
• 2. Nutrient
• SPERM CELL (SPERMATOZOON)
• EGG CELL (OVUM)
