MUSCULOSKELETAL PROBLEMS IN SITTING & STANDINGgeo michael
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) refer to injuries of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and skeleton that result from repetitive or forceful exertions, vibrations, awkward postures, and other risk factors at work. Common causes of MSDs include awkward postures, forceful exertions, repetitive motions, and vibrations. Both prolonged standing and sitting can lead to MSDs if insufficient rest is provided or unnecessary postural loads are placed on the body. Ergonomics aims to design the workplace and jobs to fit the physical capabilities of workers in order to prevent MSDs.
This document provides ergonomic driving positions and tips to minimize risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) while driving. It describes four common driving positions - Mr. Cool, The Rollercoaster, The Multitasker, and The Racer - and the MSD symptoms and solutions associated with each. Recommendations include sitting upright with knees lower than hips, adjusting the seat height and backrest, keeping both hands on the wheel, and avoiding slouching, leaning, or death gripping the wheel. The document also covers proper lifting techniques to minimize injury risks.
The document discusses the three most common sources of chronic pain: Pronation Distortion Syndrome, Lower Crossed Syndrome, and Upper Crossed Syndrome. Each syndrome is caused by muscle imbalances from inactivity and sitting. Pronation Distortion Syndrome involves tight calf muscles and weak glutes leading to foot, knee, and back pain. Lower Crossed Syndrome results from tight hip flexors causing lower back pain. Upper Crossed Syndrome is due to tight upper back muscles and weak neck muscles, causing neck, shoulder, and arm pain. The document provides exercises to stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak muscles to correct the imbalances and prevent chronic pain long-term.
The document provides instructions for various stretching and balance exercises, including heel slides, self-mobilization techniques for the femur and patella, hip rotations using resistance bands, single leg stance exercises, and clock exercises to improve balance in different positions. Details are given for how to perform each exercise such as body positioning, sets, repetitions, hold time, and recommended frequency.
This document provides a program to address upper crossed syndrome, which is characterized by rounded shoulders and an inward curved spine. The program includes warm up exercises like light walking or cycling, followed by flexibility exercises targeting the levator scapulae, upper traps, and chest muscles. It also includes the cobra exercise on a stability ball to open the chest and strengthen the back muscles. Stretches and myofascial release are recommended as a cool down.
This document provides exercises and instructions for a patient who has undergone total knee arthroplasty surgery. Editor's Notes
Bodies are not built for sittingAncestors rarely satToday we sit f/ everything….eating, drinking, driving etc, WORKING Millions of people r spending thousands of hours n front of computers. CONTRIBUTES TO LESS MOVEABILITY, when moveability is key to healthy body. Let’s talk about how Healthy SITTING, Supported by Healthy SEATING (combined with MOVEMENT)means healthy Mobility.
Studies show that Concentration and performance increase up to 40% when we sit properly. 30% of work absences are due to sitting related conditions Ergonomically designed seating can reduce costs with increased performance and reduced absenteeism for spinal and skeletal muscular problems.
One of the most common misconceptions with sitting is that it doesn’t require any muscular effort. But that is absolutely not true. The abdominal muscles in front of the spine - and the back muscles behind the spine - have to WORK. ––They’re like two elastic bands on either side of the spine that help us stay balanced/upright But slouching forward distorts this balancing system and strains back & neck musclesThink of holding a motorcycle upright so it doesn’t tip over. As long as the bike is balanced, you can easily hold it up with little effort. And it’s the same w/ sitting upright in your chair - – the back & stomach muscles work in unison, and it takes only minimal effort. - But tipping forward takes twice the effort to stay erect - and doubles the wear and tear on our back and neck.
Unfortunately, we don’t automatically sit with correct posture. What happens when we sit at our computers for all those hours? We become one with computer - a Consciousness-absorbing machine , we are Zoomed in/zoned out. And then what happens?? We completely forget our posture. slouched forward - head hurts, neck & back ache, legs asleep
( Note: ** = click)The intent with KO/Interstuhl’sergonomic seating is to actively support the body in healthy, non-exertive positions that keep us most comfortable & healthy while we work. Since we don’t automatically sit correctly, the ergonomic chair is a TOOL we should use to keep us healthier/more mobile (younger )Adjustment is key, because your chair – before you ever start to use it - needs to be fine-tuned -personalized- to support your body best.**Set seat height so feet are flat on the floor, with at least ** a 90 degree angle between thighs and calves **The seat depth should allow at least 1 ¼ “ (or 2 fingers or a fist) of space between back of leg and front edge of seat. (No pressure on popliteal crease)– (MOVE TO NEXT SLIDE---)
With all of this sitting, our pelvis has evolved to tilt backward and load our discs the wrong way. So the shape of the seat is important too - needs to promote good circulation in the thighs.** The bottom should be pressed against the back of the chair with a 90 degree angle also between thighs & torso - allows better circulation to all the internal organs, takes a load off discs. ** The spine needs to be supported at the 4th & 5th vertebrae( hand above the belt line). Adjust lumbar support up or down according to height ** Set counter pressure (TENSION)according to weight ** Should be 24 “– 30 “ from the computer screen, upper arms parallel with spine and close to body. ** Adjust armrest so that it slightly lifts arms at the shoulders, with the angle of the elbow 90Degrees (when forearms are resting on the wksurf ). ** KEY to healthy sitting is MAINTAINING CONTACT W/ BACKRESTto alleviate strain on back, neck, shoulders. .. -
But we cannot forget that MOVEMENT is critical to healthy sitting! Lack of movement and sitting incorrectly are not healthy. The body isn’t static, needs to move Moving is what keeps everything in proper working order. The IDEAL CHAIR will support and follow our movements ---COMMUNICATE (or talk) with our bodies--- and give us the best support in every posture. We do need chairs to do our work, but we also need to be aware of the long term effects of sitting for extended periods . We should remember to change positions (like reclining) or get up and walk around for a couple minutes every half hour.
