1. Your Name: Lauren Castello
Program Title: The Zebras and I
Theme: Zebras are like us in a couple of ways.
Audience: Family Group
Goal: To nurture respect and spark interest for animals and their habitats and to
promote conservation.
Objectives: After participating in my interpretation about the Grevy’s Zebra, at least
80% of audience members will know that all zebras stripes are different, I will
measure this by informal questioning.
After participating in my interpretation, at least 12.5% of audience members will
join the Grevy’s Zebra Facebook page. I will measure by them posting 238RA on the
wall.
At least 12.5% will ride the carousel. I will measure this by giving them a fact sheet
that they will hand to the carousel operator.
Resource/Materials Needed: Fact Sheets
Introduction: Hello and welcome to the St. Louis Zoo, I am Lauren and I want to fill
you in on how although these zebras may not look a whole lot like us, they are like
us in a couple of ways. They have “fingerprints” and they need water.
Subthemes:
1. Fingerprints make you unique, just as zebra’s stripes make them unique. No
two zebras have the same stripes.
2. These stripes could be used for a number of things. They could be used as
camouflage, when they are running in a herd or in tall grass, however,
scientists are yet to figure out what exactly the stripes are for. They have
disproved all of these theories, and are still working to figure it out.
3. However, the stripes can be used for many things, such as picking them out
of a group and monitoring where they go. At the STL zoo, we are actually
using their stripes right now to track them through Africa.
4. Again, like us zebras need water to live. Zebras in Africa are sometimes
walking up to 9 miles to find water.
5. Using their stripes, we are following certain individuals to see what water
sources they are using the most so we can help to make these sources more
abundant for the zebras.
Conclusion: This is actually one of the many projects the zoo is working on right
2. now. We are constantly sending money to Africa for equipment to dig more wells.
You know how easy it is for you to help? All it takes is a simple ride on the carousel.
All of the money made from the carousel goes directly to our efforts for the animals
in other countries. Or, you can join the Grevy’s Zebra Facebook Page to learn more
about their story, so you can fill your friends and family in and get as many people in
to help out. Don’t forget when you get on the Facebook Page to post 238RA so here
at the zoo we can see that we are making a difference! Thank you and don’t forget
that you are a lot like a zebra!
