The internship at the Virginia Museum of Transportation provided valuable hands-on experience. The intern worked with the curator to set up a new exhibit called "From Cotton To Silk" about the history of African Americans working on Virginia railroads. Significant time was also spent organizing artifacts in the archives and learning proper care and documentation procedures. As a history major specializing in public history, the intern gained knowledge that will be highly beneficial for future museum studies. The intern enjoyed the opportunity and is thankful to the museum.

1. Description:
My Internship at the
Virginia Museum of
Transportation was an immensely
valuable opportunity and experience. I
was able to work side by side with
Deena Sasser, the museum’s historian
and curator. Together we worked to set
up a new exhibit in the Museum called
“From Cotton To Silk.” This exhibit
presents the History of African
Americans who worked on the Virginia
railroads. Many hours were also spent
in the Archives organizing museum
artifacts. I gained knowledge of how to
properly care for historical items and
what procedures must be taken. As a
History major with a concentration in
Public History the knowledge I gained is
more than beneficial. I hope to further
my experience in museum studies and I
give thanks to VMT for this enjoyable
opportunity.
“From Cotton to Silk”
Building an exhibit with Deena was
very thrilling. Not only did I get to be a
part of the creation, but I also learned
the history of African Americans who
worked on Norfolk & Western and
Norfolk Southern railways. The history
and oral reports are fascinating and
full of rich stories that immediately
grab your attention.
