There are many definitions of IoT – necessarily changing with time as technology progresses and the aims and possibilities progress and expand. I have taken the vision of IoT taken by the international Telecomms Union back in 2005. But there are many, many others. Two views that almost all commentators hold in common are: That the IoT will occur and that it will pervade all our lives to a quite remarkable degree. Already we are familiar with the addition of intelligence to inanimate objects and an increasing capacity to communicate with these devices wirelessly. In other words intelligent assets and devices talking directly to each other. 5

7.
Total number very difficult to forecast because the range of applications is unclear but Intel thinks 15 billion nodes by 2015, ARM thinks 1 trillion by 2025! I think we can all safely agree that there will be lot. 7
8.
Just about every aspect of modern human existence will be affected and touched by some form of connectivity to IoT according to Beecham Research 8
9.
The cellular networks will neither get it all their own way nor will they be appropriate for all the communications in the IoT. Wimax, Weightless, Lte and others are all jockeying for position with their own offerings. Some of these are brand new ideas. The reality for the WAN could well be a mosaic of different protocols with gateways and data tunnelling joining them together. 9
10.
For the Local Area Networks, Home Area Networks and Wide Area Networks there is a plethora of contenders and technologies available and more on the way. All staking a claim to the IoT and all claiming a unique right to be involved. The reality is that some will do better than others and no one technology is looking likely to win everywhere ‐ there will be a complex hybrid system – certainly for the early years of IoT development. Many alliances are already forming between “rival” comms offerings and the common sense of handshaking and interfacing is seeing more of this sort of co‐operation. 10
11.
So where are we seeing any sort of tangible evidence of this IoT phenomenon? Well those involved in RFID and active tagging have actually seen a mini version of IoT for many years. Small and not so small systems – wired and wireless combinations – that allow web monitoring of individual assets within discreet proprietary networks. But the enormity of a world wide IoT –
are we even close to seeing that? Smart energy and Smart metering are about as close to that as we get right now. Worldwide phenomenon – all emerging economies – India, China, Mexico, Brazil ……..plus UK, USA, Australia all already deploying. UK mandated for Smart Meters in every home by 2020. Several hundred thousand already out there….ZigBee for the HAN and back haul being fought over right now. This ecosystem will lead to the “Smart Home”…. 11
12.
Starting with Smart Meters and the infrastructure that will be necessary to implement that we will see the integration of micro generation, electric vehicles, thermostats and quickly thereafter a raft of “service provision” in the shape of boiler monitoring and maintenance, care in the home, security, flood warning systems etc. Smart meter systems will also be introduced into industrial premises and brought to the edges of commercial sites – potentially providing a comms system into every corner of the UK. 12
13.
In some territories – but by no means all – ZigBee mesh networking technology has been selected for the home area network within Smart Metering deployments. 13
14.
ZigBee – the technology in which we specialise – has seen an exponential growth in the past two years or so of ZigBee Smart Energy products moving in to service the ZSE ecology as it grows. In Home Displays, Thermostats, smart plugs, range extenders, gateways….. Major companies are involved in developing products on the ZigBee platform – Schneider, Siemens, Philips, Osram, Bosch, Huawei, Samsung, Toshiba…plus many start‐ ups and newco’s. 14
15.
As Smart meter networks grow we are also seeing increasing deployment of other new, separate networks. Street lighting systems, environmental monitoring for noise, air pollution, road traffic reporting etc. etc. Shared backbones and spare capacity in these networks could be used for other small packet size data streams providing an opportunity for monitoring a wide range of assets publicly and privately owned. 15
16.
Care in the home as well as more automated care within hospitals and homes for the elderly. Pressure on existing health providers has reached breaking point in many western countries and enabling people to live longer in their own homes without the need for constant one‐on‐one supervision is an excellent potential solution for Government and the elderly alike. Obviously also a chargeable service by utilities or by their partners? Medical assets owned by the NHS or private health care providers but supplied on‐loan to patients in their homes will need to be tracked and monitored. 16
17.
Environmental monitoring may require a different infrastructure……Cisco has a blue sky proposal to scatter billions of sensors all over the planet! Possibly not completely thought through? But increasingly networks are being considered and deployed that can cover large areas. Irrigation and crop monitoring networks, road lighting schemes, remote base station and substation systems. If you are monitoring irrigation cycles on a large farm then why not use the same network to monitor machinery, livestock, farm security? 17
18.
You can already buy kits to web enable almost anything you want. I found ioBridge in a quick Google search but there must be more and there will be hundreds of such companies very soon. Offering niche apps for controlling every device you own via the web. 18
19.
So when should you be taking this seriously or factoring in the advent of IoT? Systems like these two examples from Advantech already show how IoT is already here. It is just not joined up yet. If you are deploying these sorts of systems or working with this sort of sophisticated mix of technologies to provide solutions and asset management systems then you are probably very well placed to plug in to the IoT as and when it materialises in a more complete form. If you are not doing this sort of thing then maybe you should be? [AGV monitoring systems consist of three parts: configuration control software, communication system and in‐vehicle PLC •
Configuration control software: to monitor the operational condition and traveling routes of AGV as well as providing the fault alarm and current status of materials. If anything goes wrong when the vehicle is in operation, the control centre can start or stop the vehicle to prevent accidents. • Communication system: the system includes a high‐speed redundant fibre optic ring network and is equipped with a number of wireless APs and wireless serial device servers to provide reliable communication between the control centre and the AGV. • In‐vehicle PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) system: the system is responsible for feeding back information of a vehicle’s status and the providing the relevant instructions to control the AGV in real time.] 19
20.
Here is another wider network example also from Advantech. But how far are we from seeing the reality of what all will recognise as IoT? [Through VHF transmission, the AIS receiver provides tracking and location information for vessels at sea and is installed at specific locations, such as crowded ports, high traffic shipping lanes, canals and points at high altitude. When connected to a computer with a serial cable, data from the AIS receiver, such as navigation charts shows the position and direction of different ships in a specific area and displays it on a monitor. In order to fully utilize this information, our client needed a reliable module to connect an AIS receiver and a Marine Traffic Control System, developed by an Advantech’s System Integrator, to the Internet via a serial port. ] 20
21.
The term Internet of Things is attributed to Kevin Ashton of MIT in 1999 He was essentially referring to the possibilities of 3D barcode and passive RFID technology Some of the common low power, wireless protocols simply didn’t exist in 1999 ZigBee was barely in its infancy Bluetooth Low Energy didn’t exist 6lowPAN was six years from inception And so on…. In thirteen years much has happened and we are seeing huge strides now towards a tangible reality. Multi millions are being invested in IoT now and billions will follow. The smart money is on a full Internet of Things existing within ten years History would advise that we all take it seriously – virtually no business on earth will be unaffected when it happens. 21
