Malaysia has some of the slowest internet speeds in the world according to a 2012 report. 50% of Malaysians experience slow internet connections below 2 Mbps, which decreases work productivity by 50%. While Telekom Malaysia has introduced fiber optic Unifi connections, speeds are still slower than Singapore and unaffordable for many. Internet is particularly slow in rural areas due to insufficient broadband options and low signal quality. High costs are needed to implement fiber optics in Malaysia, making internet plans expensive yet still slow. Improving rural connectivity and reducing costs could help address Malaysia's internet speed issues.
