The Sun and Moon were mortal lovers whose pure love made the goddess Aphrodite jealous. To test their love, Aphrodite appeared to the Sun in her most beautiful form, but he remained devoted to the Moon. Angered, Aphrodite separated them so they would never see each other again. However, their love remained strong, and Zeus allowed them to see each other during solar eclipses. Their reunions every few years is what we now call an eclipse.
