Information on the Intercultural Communication Study Abroad course at the University of Arkansas that will run on May 25 to June 7. The course will be COMM 3983 and is open to all majors.

and how they are tied to culture.

7. Dublin is a city that is very old and
very modern. We will experience
both.

8. City planners will talk
to us about the
challenges of master
planning a city that is
both modern and
historical.

9. We will visit the Cliffs of Moher
One of Ireland’s most famous
landmarks

10. We will enjoy music
both modern and traditional
as we consider how music both
reflects and creates culture

11. You will try Irish food in a small-town
restaurant, in a pub, and in a castle

12. Hear Irish ballads and listen to Irish
poetry as we dine
in Dunguaire Castle

13. Kylemore Abbey
looks like something
out of a fairytale
and we will learn the
history of this Irish
treasure as we learn
about the Irish
countryside.

14. At Glasnevin
Cemetery, you can
search your Irish
roots or just visit
famous graves

15. IRELAND AWAITS
There are many abandoned monasteries
around Ireland
and we will learn why.

16. Hear actors recite famous pieces
of Irish literature as we visit key locations in
the Unesco City of Literature.

17. In Belfast, Northern Ireland we will study the
famous murals and have a chance to sign the
peace wall.

24. Course Overview:
You will learn and grow through intercultural experiences and will
gain a deeper understanding of the intercultural learning process.
We will look at how culture is created through history, art,
literature, and geography. In country, we will explore locations
that will challenge you to think about, not only the culture of
Ireland, but about how it compares to your own culture. We will
learn about cultural theory, cultural differences and similarities,
and communicating effectively across different contexts.
Upon returning to the United States, you will possess a greater
understanding of intercultural communication and how it impacts
the individual, the society, and the workplace.

25. OBJECTIVES
1. Identify similarities and differences between the United and Irish culture.
2. Understand and discuss the historical, cultural, and economic facts that have shaped Ireland's current
business environment.
3. Communicate the driving factors that underpin Irish culture: politics, religion, art, music by visiting key
locations and engaging in dialogues about intercultural communication implications.
4. Compare and contrast the United States’ and Ireland's geography and the impact on thought and action.
5. Understand Hofstede's Cultural Taxonomy as it applies to Ireland, the United States, and how to interpret
it for other countries.
6. Use effective nonverbal communication and understand implications of misuse in personal and business
contexts.
7. Analyze primary texts from Irish literature and music within the context they were produced. Interpret
historical sites in terms of historical importance, architecture, and influence by researching at least one
site and making an on-site report to the group.
8. Discuss cultural challenges behind the conflict associated with the Peace Wall.
9. Compare and contrast the worldview of the United States to the worldview of Ireland.
10.Demonstrate the four intercultural competencies: self-awareness, cultural literacy, managing emotions,
cultural bridging.
