Interbet co-founder and CEO Johnny Stark tells us about the newly launched www.interbet.mobi sports betting site and how it takes sports betting in South Africa into the future.
2. Welcome! I’m Johnny Stark.
Co-founder of Interbet International

3. The history of betting stretches back over time from ancient
Mesopotamia, the Greeks, the Romans, Medieval times and the
Victorian era into its boom in the 20th century.
Each era has its fascinating stories of wagers.
4. • Betting became more popular than ever in
last century with the liberalisation
gambling laws internationally and SA.
• Over the last 20-30 years the proliferation
of gambling was unprecedented.
• Online gaming is now a global $30 billion
dollar industry, without counting the USA,
China, Japan, South Korea where online
betting is illegal.

5. • Gaining popularity: Mobile is the most
popular communication tool in SA .
• Bet from anywhere: the game, the pub,
the outdoors.
• Watch from anywhere: follow the action.
• Gaining trust: Mobile betting, like mobile
banking, is gaining trust globally.
• Consumers have the tool: now they just
need to learn about the ease of mobile
betting.
6. Here you can see how mobile has rocketed in popularity since the 1990s
In 2009 mobile overtook all other forms of media as the most pervasive form of
media in the country. It even overtook radio, traditionally the strongest media in SA.
7. - Between 30 & 50 million mobile phones in SA
- SA Households in 2011: only 9.8% of the
population had Internet access at home while
75.5% of households had access to a cellular
phone (Stats SA).
- Mobile is clearly the communication medium
we should focus on because it has the widest
reach and greatest growth potential.
8. Internet Mobile
• 2010: about 4 million fixed lines in SA • SA has more than 100% mobile phone penetration
• 2011: 6.8 million internet users • Conservatively estimated, 7.9-million urban South
Africans access the internet on their mobile phones.
• 2012: 10 million internet users in SA • Of these, 2.48-million access it only on their

9. - Revenue from betting is critical for the survival of horseracing, an industry that creates thousands
of jobs and generates revenue that stimulates the local economy.
- Horseracing is better developed in countries like South Africa where a consistent and regulated
legal framework for betting exists and where redistribution from betting is organised. The health of
the sector strongly depends on financial incentives such as prize money supplied mainly from
betting income.
- All bets placed on the Interbet system are placed only with registered and licenced bookmakers and
the two licenced tote operators (Phumelela and GoldCircle).
- The sport of horseracing has declined in track attendances over past decades, but has grown in
other ways thanks to the media. A 2008 report by Phumelela stated that South African racing is
broadcast in more than 40 countries around the world thus giving it a significant global footprint of
more than 2 billion people and attracts a over 1.5 million punters to more than 400 race days
nationally each year.
- And now technologies like mobi will bring punters even closer to racing.
- Betting is not a game of chance, but a game of skill where predictions are based on information
(about your team, your horse, your track or pitch) – information which is at your fingertips in the
world of today.
- You can win big for a small investment, for example with tote bets such as the Pick 6 and Soccer 13.
10. • Interbet is an Internet-based trading system for betting on horseracing
and sports.
• The system has completely revolutionised the way bookmakers do
business in South Africa since launching in 2001.
• It was initially a closed user group for bookies only, later we allowed
public to enter the market with ‘limited betting rights’, and then a tote
service was introduced.
• Around R2 billion is bet through the Interbet system every year.
• All you need is a basic knowledge of betting.
• Payment are made via SA credit card or bank transfer.
11. • Their mobi sites have a limited offering
- There are bookmakers (fixed odds operators) with mobi
sites, but none of them offer betting into the tote pools.
- None of them allow you to bet with more than one
bookmaker at the same time.
- Odds quoted on their sites are retail odds.
• Their mobi sites are not all user-friendly
• Most mobi betting sites are made for older phones &
can’t handle touch screen or the enhanced features of
the latest smart phones
• So… there is a gap in the market…
12. • Our customers can bet with the tote and bookmakers with one wallet –
nowhere else can you get this facility.
• World first: we are the only trading platform that electronically unifies all the
top local bookmakers into 1 market.
• Our customers bet into the wholesale market, but with other betting sites
you bet into the retail market
• So you’ll always get the best odds available in the market.
• Plus you can negotiate online for even better odds – only with Interbet.
• The result is Interbet customers consistently get returns on winning bets that
are 20-30% or more higher than you would get with a regular bookmaker.
• When you login, we give you market info, trading data, horse racing forms
(wins, losses, jockey, trainer etc) to equip you. No-one else offers this.
• Confidentiality: Bets are placed by the system anonymously. Bookmakers will
never know who placed the bet. Interbet protects the privacy of all players.
Our unquestioned integrity has been proven over the last 11 years. This is
very important to players. No other betting site in SA guarantees your privacy
in this way.
13. • Built on Interbet’s unique betting engine.
• Our mobi site feels like an app, it’s made for your phone – be it an old phone or the
latest smart phone.
• Backend coded in Node JS - open-source code & the fastest server language in the
world, also used by Linkedin Mobile.
• Intuitive design and fast in real time.
• The mobi site’s data delivery is quick. Think of getting pie at the shop: regular shops
serve one pie at a time to a queue of customers, but with us all the customers in the
shop get served over the counter at the same time.
14. • iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Samsung, Kindle, Internet
Explorer, Opera Desktop, all older feature phones with internet browsers
15. • Access is username and password protected
• To make it user-friendly, we allow you set up
your own unique Quick PIN.
• SSL security certificate, like internet banking.
16. • Our Tote service covers all
horseracing on Tellytrack (DSTV
239)
• Including horseracing from South
Africa, Zimbabwe, USA, Mauritius,
Dubai, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong
• The tote service also covers all
non-horseracing sports bets such
as the Soccer 6 and Rugby 5
• Our fixed-odd service covers all
major local and international
horseracing and sporting events.
64. • What we wanted to do with our mobi site is to
make things more convenient for sports and
racing punters.
• We also wanted to recreate the experience of
going to the racetrack. In the old days when you
went racing you could go from bookie to bookie
looking for best odds and then to the tote. Our
mobi site lets you do this.
• And that brings us to an exciting announcement…
65. • Welcome to the first live stream racing mobi
site in SA!
• Now you can watch the race live and listen to
commentary live – streamed to your phone.
• It’s really a visit to the track, wherever you
are.
66. Thank you!
