An interval of confidence allows us to estimate with a certain probability how close a sample statistic is to the true population parameter. It provides a range of values within which we can be reasonably sure the true population parameter lies. A 95% confidence interval means that if we were to repeat our sampling experiment many times, 95% of the calculated confidence intervals would contain the true value.
