Becoming a circus clown is a much more difficult task
than many people think. The rigorous schooling that
clowns must endure at four-year clown universities only
prepares them for the occasional parade or children’s
birthday party. Those clowns who want to perform at
the circus level must exhibit much more commitment to
the art. To enhance the skills from the university, many
clowns get their master’s degree in Street Mime
Techniques. Since the circus is such a large area to cover
when performing, using the grand gestures learned in
mime school provides the clowns with the physicality
necessary to reach those in even the highest bleachers.
