The Fascinating World of Bats: Unveiling the Secrets of the Night
Bats, the mysterious creatures of the night, have long been a source of fascination and fear for humans. With their eerie squeaks and fluttering wings, they have captured our imagination and sparked our curiosity. Yet, beyond the myths and legends, bats are fascinating creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem.
There are over 1,300 species of bats, ranging from the tiny Kitti's hog-nosed bat to the majestic flying foxes. These winged mammals are found in almost every corner of the globe, from the scorching deserts to the lush rainforests. Their diversity is a testament to their adaptability and resilience.
Bats are insectivores, feeding on a vast array of insects, from mosquitoes to beetles. A single bat can consume up to 1,200 insects in an hour, making them a crucial part of our pest control system. By preying on insects that damage crops, bats save the agricultural industry billions of dollars each year.
But bats are not just useful; they are also fascinating creatures. Their ability to fly in complete darkness, using echolocation to navigate and hunt, is a remarkable feat of evolution. They are also social animals, living in colonies and communicating with each other through a complex system of calls and body language.
Despite their importance, bats face numerous threats, from habitat destruction to climate change. Many species are endangered, and conservation efforts are necessary to protect these magnificent creatures.
In conclusion, bats are more than just creatures of the night; they are a vital part of our ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature. By learning more about these fascinating animals, we can appreciate their importance and work to protect them for generations to come. So, let us embrace the beauty and mystery of bats, and celebrate their unique place in our world.

Whoever said childlike whimsy had to stop when you
become an adult? Well apparently Kerstin Hiestermann
never got the memo. The German Instagram artist has risen
to prominence in the photo sharing community for her art
pieces that display everyday items in collaboration with her
own minimalist drawings. These two components combine
to create something that can only be described as magical.
BLANCO recently partnered with the artist to create
inspirational pieces with BLANCO products for an
Instagram promotion. Hiestermann discusses her
introduction to Instagram, her creative process, and more
when we interviewed her.
What first inspired you to do iPhone art and then to
share it on Instagram?
I learned about Instagram from some friends. They used
the app and invited me to join. I was excited by the
opportunity to be able to post and share my pictures so
quickly and easily. I was also fascinated by the pictures of
other users from other countries, cultures and ways of life.
How did you get started with your art concept?
The idea of combining a concrete object and my own free
hand drawing came to me rather randomly. Around
Christmas time I was baking biscuits and cookies with my
youngest son and the idea popped in my head of a little
man running from the biscuit. So I put the biscuit on a white
paper, lined with simple lines to a landscape and took this
picture with my iPhone. So gradually I added more and
more of these images in my Instagram gallery until I
eventually wrote in the caption of one of my photos: “I
cannot stop with this”, because at that point I had an
endless stream of ideas flowing out of me.
What came first – your art or Instagram?
Instagram. I do not know if I would have ever created my
art without Instagram.

“It’s worth traveling to the
ends of the earth to find
a little beauty.”

Winning Caption:
“When every detail of
your home is uniquely
you, it just feels right.”
Have you always been an artist?
No, not at all. I am a teacher as was my mother. There is a
very large, childlike part of me, I have reserved unto myself.
But now, I can express that through my pictures.
Which is your favorite BLANCO piece?
Definitely the CapFlow Stainless Steel Drain Cover. I love
the brushed stainless steel, the simple design and the
engraved Blanco logo. Thus, it is also the image that is
created with this object (the globe) that is one of my favorite
pictures.
5. Winning Caption:
“Blanco…just the
right amount of spice
for your kitchen.”

Winning Caption:
“Sprinkle some Style
into the Kitchen.”
What is your creative process? How did you come up
with the concepts for BLANCO?
In my paintings I always work with individual objects that
speak to me and fascinate me with their shape or
appearance. I like my work to be very minimalist. The
particular style of Blanco was perfect for my work. The
elegant stainless steel surfaces and the design of the
accessories such as a faucet, a cutting board or a drain
cover have a very high visual appeal for me.

inside a stunning Poggenpohl kitchen.
The Phase II renovation included an
expanded 1,600 square foot open and
universally accessible kitchen space in
which multiple families can cook and
dine together. The kitchen area was
designed and built by Vasi Ypsilantis of
Vasi Ypsilantis Design Associates and
owner of Poggenpohl Long Island,
Margreet Cevasco of Margreet Cevasco
Design, along with Mitco Construction.
“Our combination of design and
contracting expertise enhances the
project’s creativity and functionality since
Margreet and I both employ a similar
design aesthetic,” states Vasi Ypsilantis.
“Teaming up on renovations can be a
challenge, but we’ve enjoyed 10 years of
successful show house projects,
residential renovations and endearing
friendship. We both have the same goal
– which is to make these dream kitchens
and living spaces a reality for parents
and families.”
The new kitchen layout functions to
support both cooking, storage and
eating anytime during the day or night
with multiple integrated appliances for
convenience. The kitchen and dining
areas include fresh inspirational ideas
that can be adapted to any kitchen
renovation, such as creating a focal
point with a bold accent color on walls
or pantry doors, maximizing cooking
and storage areas with double islands,
expanded pantry space for large
families, coffered ceilings and bringing
the outside in with the juxtaposition of
bold and neutral colors.

Bacon Jam
You can make this and jar it, or just store it in the fridge.
Tastes good on burgers, sandwiches and eggs.
12 slices of thick bacon, cut into 1/2 inch slices,
cooked until brown (not crispy)
4 tablespoons of bacon grease,
reserved from frying bacon
1 large red onion, diced into 1/4 inch squares
(yielded about 2.5 cups)
1 tablespoon mined garlic
1 dash of salt
1/4 cup diced jalapenos (this amount makes it spicy, use
less if worried about the temperature)
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup pure maple syrup (don’t use artificial syrups)
3/4 cup brewed coffee
Note: Do not cook bacon until it is crispy. You want it to be
brown and chewy. This allows the liquids in the recipe a
chance to flavor and marinate the bacon.
In a medium size sauté pan, add 2 tablespoons of bacon
grease. Wait until it is hot enough to sauté and add the
diced onion and garlic. Cook until the onions are clear – 8
minutes on medium heat, stirring every once in a while. If
they start to stick to the bottom of the pan, add a bit more
grease. In a medium saucepan, add the vinegar, brown
sugar, maple syrup, 2 tablespoons of bacon grease, coffee,
jalapenos and bacon. When the onions and garlic are done,
add these to the medium saucepan too.
Bring the jam to a boil and then reduce heat to medium low
– the jam should simmer for 45 minutes. Check the jam
every 15 minutes and stir once.
Note: You will know it is done because almost all of the
liquid is gone when the jam is stirred.
Keep refrigerated!
9. Did you know that according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 5.1
million families in the country live in mult-gen homes?
A recent Metropolis Magazine panel discussion explored the
topic of designing kitchens for multi-gen homes. The panel
event, “Generation Shift: Designing kitchens for the multi-gen
era,” was held at the Poggenpohl Kitchen Design Studio in
downtown New York City. The three expert panelists, Paul
Makovsky, Editorial Director for Metropolis; Roger Zierman,
Showroom Manager and Designer for Poggenpohl as well as
Tim Maicher, Director of Marketing and Product Development
for BLANCO explored trends, technology, products and design
for the multi-generation kitchen.
