When creating a mobile application, organisations have a few options to choose from; mobile web, native or a hybrid application. Having followed best practices from previous Selenium Conference talks, the Zoll Lifevest team was able to shift from flaky tests to stable and reliable automated tests. We are often reminded by those experienced in writing test automation that code is code. The sentiment being conveyed is that test code should be written with the same care and rigor with which production code is written.
However, many people who write test code may not have experience writing production code, so it’s not exactly clear what is meant by this sentiment. And even those who write production code find that there are unique design patterns and code smells that are specific to test code in which they are not aware.
Given a smelly test automation code base that is littered with several bad coding practices, Angie walks through each of the smells, discusses why it is considered a violation, and demonstrates a cleaner approach by refactoring the code live on stage.

Using Kubernetes to Host Sauce Connect Tunnels by Morgan Vergara
The Dell team was initially running tunnels on Windows VMs and providing a set of static tunnels for users, configured to access various test environments. They used custom DNS servers to access test environments, and the DNS server settings of SauceConnect to control name resolution for those tunnels. They needed more flexibility in name resolution, so we tried using HOSTS files, but all tunnels on a single VM would have to use the same HOSTS file, limiting the flexibility. Using Kubernetes containers allows the team to run a single tunnel in its own container, with its own HOSTS file, thus allowing users to have custom tunnels with fully controlled DNS resolution. In this session, Morgan Vergara explains how this enabled them to set up an infrastructure that allows users to set up custom tunnels on demand.

- Motivate all Sauce Labs employees to consume and contribute to OSS in a simple, secure and healthy way
- Facilitate communication between product and the open source ecosystem
- Bring developers closer to the community to enable innovation and product obsession
- Shape and build important standards for Sauce Labs, such as WebDriver, in collaboration with other open source groups
This talk will show how we are doing all this in small steps, planning for the long run and involving all teams to increase the sense of belonging of OSS. And more importantly, it will show why having an open source strategy matters, and how can this benefit everyone in the long term.

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.

- Unfortunately, testing has not keep pace with the changes we’ve seen in dev. Legacy testing tends to be slow, expensive and is lagging behind all the advancements made in DevOps. In order to maintain pace with dev teams, the reality is that testing must also transform. Testing can no longer be done at the end of the development cycle by QA teams only.
