The student practiced several charms including Lumos, Wingardium Leviosa, Levioso, Alarte Ascendare, Fluito, Reparo, and Alohomora. For most charms, the student had difficulty with subtle wand movements and concentration but improved over time. The student found Levioso and Alarte Ascendare to be impractical, while Reparo and Alohomora showed potential usefulness. Practice with heavier objects increased the challenge.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

CapTechTalks Webinar Slides June 2024 Donovan Wright.pptxCapitolTechU
Slides from a Capitol Technology University webinar held June 20, 2024. The webinar featured Dr. Donovan Wright, presenting on the Department of Defense Digital Transformation.
2. LUMOS
Pronunciation:
LOO-mos
Description:
Creates a narrow beam of light that shines from the wand's tip, like a torch.
Notes:
opposite incantation, Nox, puts the light out.
Wand Movements:
There are no excessive wand movements needed besides a single loop preferably done quickly while correctly
pronouncing the charm.
3. LUMOS
I found the Lumos spell simple when I was only trying to achieve a standard light, however when I
actually focused and tried to change the power/brightness of the spell I found it slightly difficult to
achieve the brightness that I wanted. The wand movement was a nice change of pace considering I
have been attempting the spells from further lessons and decided to go back and touch up on some
spells from the previous lessons.
4. WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA
Pronunciation:
win-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa
Description:
Levitates and moves the target; the wand motion is described as "swish and flick".
Wand Movement:
To perform the wand movement (typically called the “Swish and Flick”) raise your wand toward the left and
then let it glide gently toward the right, with the wand tip pointed forward.
Then you simply move the tip of the wand back toward your body before flicking it in the direction of your target.
Mental Component:
Focus on the object you’d like to levitate, when finishing the spell make sure you are still focusing on this object or you
might inadvertently levitate something you had not meant to. Also visualize drawing energy from your core and directing
it through your wand.
5. WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA
When practicing the Wingardium Leviosa charm I noticed that if I even tilted my wand slightly more than I
should have the charm would not work quite as well as it should have. I also had some difficulty regarding
staying focused during the finishing stages of the spell and had, unfortunately, accidently levitated a
different object than the one I had intended to levitate. I had little difficulty regarding the pronunciation of
the spell it was just some difficulty regarding slight hand movements and concentration.
Visualizing the energy from my magical core and pushing it towards my wand was about as difficult as I
had expected it to be. It wasn’t easy but it also wasn’t overly difficult for me personally. I managed to
advance from feather like weights to the weight of two full A4 binder folders and am still improving. Once I
achieved a heavier weight load, I found increasingly difficult to keep the objects balanced and steady as
well as a noticeable drop in the height I had achieved with the feather like weights.
6. LEVIOSO
Pronunciation:
Lev-ee-O-so
Description:
Once cast upon an object that the caster is physically touching in some way, it allows the caster to move that object up
and down. Due to its impractical nature and the advent of more efficient charms, the Hover Charm does not see much
use.
Wand Movement:
The wand movement consist of an Inward Spiral then a flick Up.
Mental Component:
No mental component required to correctly use spell (besides the obvious).
7. LEVIOSO
I found the Levioso charm impractical to everyday life as the caster actually has to be physically
touching the object that they wish to move and even after that the caster can only move the
object/s up and down. Overall, while I did take the time to learn this spell, I found this to be the
least effective spell/charm we have studied thus far and could not see myself using this in an
everyday scenario.
8. ALARTE ASCENDARE
Pronunciation:
A-lar-tay a-SEN-day-ray
Description:
This charm does not require that the caster be touching the target, however, it is
only capable of propelling an object straight up into the air and back down again. The height obtained is somewhat
controllable depending upon the effort that is put into it, but the height is not very significant and it again becomes a
fairly impractical charm with limited use, and heavier objects tend to move less.
Wand Movement:
The wand movement consist of a quick swish at the end of the pronunciation.
Mental Component:
No mental component required to correctly use spell (besides the obvious).
9. ALARTE ASCENDARE
When learning then practicing the Alarte Ascendare charm I found it to be almost as bad in a
practical sense as the Levioso charm. I did have some difficulty in the pronunciation of this
particular charm, however, once I actually put theory into practice I found that this was just as
bad as or worse than the Levioso charm. The only positive is that the caster, me, didn’t have to
physically touch the object that they wished to move. However that said, the heavier the object
the more I had to concentrate and focus on what I was doing as well as trying to keep my wand
arm steady despite the fatigue that had somewhat settled in during this practice with heavier
objects.
10. FLUITO
Pronunciation:
flew-ee-toe
Description:
Unlike the Hover Charm, this spell can target a distant object rather than requiring physical contact. Unlike the
Rocket Charm, this spell involves controlled vertical movement. However, the charm is not without its limitations.
Objects can only be levitated a handful of feet into the air, and they cannot be directed to move any other way besides
up and down.
Wand Movement:
The wand movement consist of a Jab and Upward Flick throughout the enunciation of the spell
Mental Component:
No rigorous mental component required to correctly use spell, however the caster needs to focus on controlling their
movements.
11. FLUITO
I worked on making sure that my pronunciation was good enough to start adding the wand
movements as well. I also worked my way up from light-weight objects to heavier objects. I
noticed when it came to the heavier objects that I needed to focus more closely and keep my
wand arm steady so as not to abruptly drop the heavy items.
Although the Fluito charm has some advantages when it comes to stacking items on top of one
another, I found this spell to be, essentially, useless unless you were employed at a library or
bookstore where this spell could almost come in handy.
12. REPARO
Pronunciation:
reh-PAH-roh
Description:
To mend a simple break, such as from a chipped mug, the caster must simply say the proper incantation and make the
correct wand gesture while picturing the mug as undamaged. The image doesn’t have to be exact, but the caster
should at least have an idea of what the thing they are repairing looks like undamaged. This spell is particularly
useful to practice with because it doesn’t require a great deal of power or effort for most repairs but it demonstrates
how continuous wand movement works. Reparo cannot repair broken magical item such as brooms or wands. Should
the caster slip in their concentration or in the wand movement, what they’ve attempted to mend will only be half
done.
Wand Movement:
The wand movement consist of an inward pointed spiral throughout the enunciation of the spell
Mental Component:
The caster needs to be able to picture what the undamaged product once was but they do not have to imagine the
undamaged product in ridiculously extreme detail.
Wand Movement
Starting Point
13. REPARO
I started off repairing small things around the house after I had practiced the pronunciation enough so as
to feel confident employing my theoretical knowledge into practical studies. There were a few mishaps of
uncompleted repairs as I lost focus part way through my application of the spell. There were also a few
other times where I did not have the clearest image in my head of what the undamaged product actually
looked like, so while the product was technically repaired it did not match what the product had originally
been.
After I gained more confidence, and evidence, in my use of the Reparo charm, I moved onto larger more
complex objects such as extremely broken doors and walls as well as mechanical children’s toys, such
as Transformers, once I had repaired the walls and doors. The toys were more difficult as the were many
small parts that I had to roughly imagine to be in the correct spots.
14. ALOHOMORA
Pronunciation:
al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah
Description:
This spell is used to open and unlock doors; it can unseal doors upon which the Locking Spell has been cast, although
it is possible to bewitch doors to resist the spell.
Wand Movement:
As demonstrated, the charm’s wand movement is a backward S that curves back upward at the end. The caster
Must focus upon the lock to be undone, whether it is just a physical lock or of magical design. It's important to
begin the wand movement as you begin saying the spell and end it as you finish saying the spell, regardless of how
quickly you say the spell or perform the movement. Depending upon the particular spell used to create the lock,
the Unlocking Charm may prove ineffective.
Mental Component:
No mental component required to correctly use spell (besides the obvious).
Wand Movement
Starting Point
15. ALOHOMORA
I found that when I attempted to complete the spell I was 50/50 with pronunciation so I
decided to take a break from the practical work and look over my theory work and continued
to practice my enunciation of the Alohomora charm. I restarted my practical testing on a
plain old mechanical lock, then once I felt confident on those I moved up to magically locked
doors, which I had one of the older students lock for me, that had very simple magical
protection on the lock, well for them anyway. After practicing on these for a while I finally
thought I had enough confidence to move onto a more magically protected lock. I had
Professor Flitwick set the magical protections on the lock on a door of an unused
classroom. This set was indeed much more challenging.
I noticed every time my movement was slightly off and these slight differences brought out
different results on the different levelled challenges. all in all it was a fun exercise that could
also be used later on when learning more new charms and spells.
