An inguinal hernia occurs when part of an internal organ or tissue bulges through the groin muscle. The cause is often unknown but may be due to weaknesses in the abdominal wall present from birth or later in life. Risk factors include fluid/pressure in the abdomen, heavy lifting, straining, obesity, chronic coughing, or pregnancy. Symptoms can include a bulge in the groin that disappears when lying down, or pain in the groin during activities like lifting or coughing. Treatment may involve pushing the hernia back in manually or surgery if it cannot be reduced. Surgery is usually recommended if an inguinal hernia is diagnosed.
