Who I am and Why I am Doing This
My name is Dr. Shaunte' McFarland. I am a marine wife of 8 years. I
have three wonderful children who plesantly drive me crazy. Like most
black women I wear many hats: teacher, therapist, advisor and coach.
Over the past 8 years I have made some pretty good friendships with
other wives but they often start and end at whatever base we are
stationed at. Being a marine wife has been one of the most isolating
experiences of my life. Whenever we get to a new base I start from
scratch: schools, church home, nail tech, beautician and if I have time a
friend. Not just any friend, a black friend. Don't get me wrong I love all
races but there's something special about finding another sista to
connect with. This my 3rd PCS move and I was looking for an
organization that would check on me when my husband was deployed,
celebrate the birth of child, tell me where to get my hair did, celebrate
my success, have a drink with and have a good time. After searching
for an organization that provides this and coming up empty-handed, I
decided to just start it myself. Frankly, we as black military wives
deserve our own quality and dedicated organization. So here we have it
ladies:The League of Roses. Why a rose? Because black military wives
are like roses. Everyone sees our beauty but no one knows how we
gracefully handle the thorns in the background.
Purpose
The purpose of the League of Roses is to
construct an unbreakable sisterly bond between
black military wives in order to improve their
quality of life, gain long-lasting friendships and
support their distinctive goals.
Membership
Membership is open to all
black military wives of
active-duty, reserved and
retired service members.
Structure
The League of Roses is meant to be an enjoyable space for black
military wives.
The National Headquarters is based out of Los Angeles.
We will have local chapters based on the closest military base.
All members hold a national and chapter membership
There are monthly meetings.
We will have regular social events to engage members.
Most of our communication will be online until the pandemic passes.
Facebook
Groups
Most of our communication will be hosted on
Facebook. As of now, we will have 4 Facebook
groups for active and financial members only. We are
not a monolith and we all have different interests.
These groups are created in order to categorize those
interests. A member can join all or none of the
subgroups but must join the main group to stay
informed. The four groups are: The League of Roses
(main group/members only), The Golden Vase (for
career and education interests), A Glass of Merlot (an
"after dark" group for mature audiences only), Roses
and Buds (for mothers and expecting mothers).

MEETING ARE HELD
EVERY FIRST SATURDAY
AT 12PM FOR BRUNCH.
For the remainder of 2020, we
will hold virtual meetings every
1st Saturday at 12 pm PST to
discuss events, organizational
growth, new membership
intake (4 per year on the day
of the new seasons), and new
initiatives.
New
Member
Intake
EVERY SEASON
New Members will be initiatied on the first
day of Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
Interested wives can fill out the form on the
website during recruitment.
EVENTS
Interested wives may attend Rose events but
they are not allowed in member only groups.
Yearly Dues
Yearly dues are $50. The funds collected are used
to support the initiatives and operation of The
League of Roses. Examples of our initiatives are
deployment care packages for spouses, baby shower
gifts, guest speakers, professional webinars, the
annual Rose Retreat, and more. The total due before
initiation is $100. Please send dues by June 1st via
CashApp to $TheLeagueOfRoses
New Member Fee
New member fees are $50. Each new
member will receive a membership pin, t-
shirt, tote, certificate, feature in the online
membership reveal, access to exclusive
member-only events and access to all
secret/member-only groups.
