ARKIA’S POST:
Hello, my name is Arkia Brooks from Montgomery, Alabama. I’m 31 years of age and married, we have two sons together. I like shopping, going out to eat and doing my hair. I own a hairline which I sell hair and other hair products.
I am a graduate of Alabama State University of May 2015, currently working in the Social Work field as a Foster Care Mentor Specialist. I work for Georgia Family and Children Services as a Foster care Mentor Specialist which I train all new hire case managers, supervisors, and veterans case managers. Very excited about this class and meeting new people. The online class will fit better into my schedule. The benefit of online is I learned some very important things: time management, determination, and accountability for my education. I decided to attend Ashford University to further my education and obtain a master’s in human services. The curriculum really would work well with my career path as well as financially. I want to help my community by starting a daycare that offers classes for special needs children.
My undergraduate academic experience was wonderful. I was on the Dean's list and won several honors awards. I’m a very determined, hard worker and organizer woman. I intern at Seraaji Family Homes Inc., a private foster care agency. While there I work with foster parents, children suffering from severe, emotional, and behavioral problems with their families. I went into the home with children to prevent them from coming into foster care. I help managed children's case files. We provide services to help enhance and empower families to build on their strength. My internship has helped me with the experience of learning so much about foster care. This internship has inspired me to continue my education further in Social work.
I can’t wait to get to know you all. I want to learn more about human development and use it in my everyday work. I only have 1 class left in I'm so excited about graduation.

1. Focus on the social worker’s educational background and training.
· In 2005, I received my BSW at FAU. In 2009, I received my MSW at FIU. I am currently a Registered Clinical Social Work Intern with the anticipation of completing my licensure this fall. I received my child welfare certificate at FAU.
2. Determine whether the social worker is licensed, and find out about what brought him or her to the field as well as his or her work history.
· I am currently working on my license, I have completed the required hours; however, I most take the test. Social work was not my first desire, while at school I struggled back and forth between medical, or becoming an English Teacher. It came a point when I accrued over 70+ credits and had no idea what I was studying. With the advice of a counselor as well as candid conversation with my aunt who is a social worker in the correctional facility. I recognized that this was my desire. For the past 10 years, I have worked with the adolescent population. For close to six years I worked at DCF/ChildNet as a Child Advocate assisting with reunification, adoptions and teens aging out of protective supervision. I worked with the substance abuse population for less than five months as that was not my passion or a desire of mine. For the past three years, I have been working with students in a charter school assisting them with obtaining a standard high school diploma. Recently, began working as an outpatient counselor.
3. Inquire about the social worker’s job activities, professional roles, and target client group, as well as services provided by his or her organization.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Program Coordinator
Yolo County Health & Human Services
Oregon State University, 2012
MPH in Health Promotion, emphasis in Child and
Adolescent Health
Western Oregon University, 2007
BA in Psychology
Minor in Sociology
3. I am a program coordinator in performance management for a Health and Human Services Agency. I spent
the last 3.5 years working to help our Community Health Branch achieve Public Health Accreditation. Now I
oversee performance management for the entire agency. I teach trainings, facilitate quality improvement
projects, and help staff determine what data they should collect that tells the story of their program and how
to communicate and share it.
Nope!Absolutely not. I started atWOU wanting to be an elementary school teacher. I had worked with kids
extensively so I started in Elementary Ed, switched to Sociology, then to Psychology and after taking Human
Sexuality, realized how much I loved health. I had an amazing professor, Shawn Sellers, point me in the
direction of public health, and I haven’t turned back since. But no, I never saw myself doing quality
improvement work. Even in grad school, I had no idea what that even meant. I stumbled upon it after getting
my first job post graduate school, but I love it.
Did you see yourself doing this while in school?
Can you explain your current position?
4. I have a lot of meetings. Most of my
work involves problem solving, so that
happens face-to-face. I also do a lot of
trainings and help facilitate group
processes, so again, lots of face time.
Some work is with internal programs,
and other times I’m working with
community partners. It’s a nice variety.
What does a typical day at
work look like?
5. I love being a problem solver and acting as a resource for others. I love public
speaking and trainings, and helping others figure out solutions. I love being
thrown into situations where I don’t know the answer. In fact, I usually don’t
start out knowing what a particular program wants or needs. But after
listening and speaking to the people involved, I’ve engaged them in a solution
and we’re on our way to improving health in the community.
I also get to be independent and autonomous in my work and I have a fairly
flexible schedule. I work with passionate people to improve the community
where I live and work, so it’s pretty awesome!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
6. One of the struggles I had in finding my first job post grad school was a lack of
relevant work experience. I went straight from my BA to grad school and
completed my master’s degree on an accelerated course to save money. I had
a baby right after grad school, so it took me about 14 months to get work
after graduation. It was tough to get that first entry-level public health
position, but once I did, other opportunities started to open up.
How did you gain relevant work experience?
7. I think because my educational trajectory was really based in research
between psychology, sociology, and then public health, it prepared me for the
job I have now. I have an eye for asking questions and looking for data and
evidence. My classes about human behavior helped prepare me to work with
and understand many of the populations served by county health and human
services, many of which are very vulnerable. My public health courses
prepared me to take what I learned about the individual and apply it to
populations in a community context.
How did your educational experiences help prepare
you for your professional life?
8. Be flexible about where you see yourself. During my time atWOU, I considered law school, teaching, being a
therapist/psychiatrist, or a school counselor. Even once I picked my grad school program, I was certain I
would end up working with maternal and child programming. And here I am, running around teaching quality
improvement and getting excited about graphs and surveys.
Get practical experience – as much as you can. Network and do informational interviews with people who
do the jobs you think you want to do. Find out what their day to day looks like. Do they sit at a desk all day or
are they out in the community?
Lastly, take care of yourself along the way. Use the resources available to you: counseling, tutoring, exercise
classes etc.You are building the habits that you employ during times of stress that you will likely continue
during the rest of your life.Western is a very special place, full of people who care, so be sure to soak up your
time there.
What advice do you have for students?
