This report summarizes influenza virus surveillance data across Europe from August 2021 to February 2022. During this period, over 44,000 influenza detections were reported, a large increase from the previous season. The vast majority (97%) were influenza A viruses, with A(H3N2) dominating (93%) over A(H1N1) (7%). Influenza B accounted for 3% of detections. While influenza activity has increased, detection numbers remain lower than pre-pandemic seasons, likely due to COVID measures limiting spread. A(H3N2) viruses are recommended for inclusion in the 2022-2023 northern hemisphere vaccine.
