INDUCTION TASK
- Photo Exercise
STRENGTH
This picture is symbolic of strength as the act of
weightlifting accumulates significant muscle growth
and is viewed as a ‘masculine’ form of activity. In our
sexist society, masculinity is instantaneously viewed
as strong. The vast amount of weights available also
implies strength, as it suggests that a lot of weights
are being used at one time, which will clearly build
more physical strength.
POVERTY
This picture implies poverty, as the
person in the picture is sad, and poverty
creates sadness. Additionally, he is in a
cage-like area (perhaps symbolising the
cage of poverty). The rubbish beside the
person in the cage-like area suggests
that this is what he is living off –
unhealthy rubbish – or perhaps what he
lives around, and no one who was not
struggling with poverty would chose to
live beside rubbish.
LOVE
This photograph of 2 people connecting hands is
symbolising love. Holding hands is symbolising love as
it is representing unity- which is the state of being
united together or as a whole. Holding hands with a
person you love is a simple gesture however it can
make a person feel loved and wanted. Holding hands
with a loved one can make them feel safe and
protected.
FEAR
This picture shows fear, as one of the subjects is
threateningly holding claw-like hand out towards
the other subject. The first subject is leaning
towards the second subject, gaining on the
second subject who is running away from the
first. The fact that the movements of the second
subject is blurred in this image implies a
desperation to escape quickly, which thus
suggests fear.
DESIRE
This image has connotations of desire as we are
biologically programmed to desire high quantities of sugar,
as they give us a lot of energy very quickly (fulfilling the
need for instant gratification) and, in society, it represents a
form of indulgence. When we see packages we recognise
to contain products that are luxurious, unneeded
indulgences (e.g. chocolate), we desire them because they
are just that – a luxurious indulgence – and while the
human psyche relies mainly on the survival instinct, getting
an added, although unneeded indulgence is desirable.
DANGER
This image shows many connotations of danger. The
barriers that are around the outside of the skip
suggests that it is keeping people from getting in and
therefore protecting people from danger. The barriers
are a way to stop people from potentially harming
themselves as the skip may be dangerous as it seems
to contain heavy objects which could possibly harm
someone especially if one was to land on a young
child.
WEALTH
This picture is symbolic of wealth because it is a symbol
for a car – specifically an Audi. Audis are wealthy cars,
and so a symbol of an Audi instantly creates the image
of a wealthy car owner in the spectator’s mind. Audi
cars are luxurious and technologically advanced cars.
While higher-end models start at $115,400, Audi car
prices are primarily within the $28,095 to $76,975 range
(starting prices).
WEAKNESS
This image symbolises weakness. Particularly, mental
weaknesses. The black and white paint implies a solemn
subject, in comparison to a bold and bright colourful image.
The erratic dashes imply an unsettled mind and, in our
judgemental society, an unsettled (perhaps even mentally ill)
mind is viewed as weak. Or, at least, the bearer of the mental
illness could view themselves as weak. The dribbles of paint
falling from the subject’s forehead also imply instability and
mental collapse (and things that collapse are known to have
a weak structure).
LONELINESS
This image connotes loneliness as it is showing a picture of
a girl who is seemingly alone and upset. Having no friends
or company can make people feel isolated and creates in
people the feeling of loneliness. Loneliness can suggest
being rejected or abandoned. The sad look on the girls face
could imply that she has been abandoned or someone has
left her, making her feel lonely.
FRIENDSHIP
This image suggests friendships, as both people in the image
are clinging onto each other and are close to each other –
something you would not see from people who are not
emotionally close to one another through a relationship like
friendship. The person on the other person’s back is clinging
onto their carrier, curled around them for support, which the
other person is clearly giving – shown through the clasping of
their thigh (a somewhat intimate place to grab another person),
and their wide, weight-supporting stance. This image implies a
trusting bond between both parties, and therefore a friendship.
PURITY
Water symbolises purity as water is seen to be clean,
natural and has no flaws. Water symbolises purity as
water is seen to be the most common cleaning agent in
the world, it is also used for purification in most living
organisms as well as having the ability to break down
compounds. The quality or condition of being pure
gives us freedom from anything that contaminates or
pollutes, for example the purity of drinking water as it is
free from any harmful substances.
GREED
This is a picture of someone showing greed. The
various amount of food and drink he has is
unnecessary and unhealthy – it appears that these
products are all manufactured (not in their natural
state) and in packages with bright colours (in our
society, we are learning that bright packaging usually
means the creator of the products is compensating for
something, which is usually the healthiness of the
product). An excessive amount of unhealthy food
implies greed and gluttony.
