7. • Indravadanbhai started his career by joining Khandelwal Laboratory as a
chemist. By this time his schoolmate Ramanbhai had completed B.Pharm.
from LMCP, Ahmedabad.
• Indravadanbhai proposed to Ramanbhai to jointly establish a small
pharmaceutical company. Both of them came to Ahmedabad and started
Cadila in 1951 in a three-room based rented bungalow at Azad Society.
• They both had a balance of Rs.25000/ with each at that time. Their
resources were scarce, but they were more than made up for by firm will
and determination. Initially while running Cadila in a bungalow, they
could not afford big staff and hence Indravadanbhai’s wife Sheelabahen
would help him pack medicines.
• Indravadanbhai was a manufacturer, marketing man and delivery man all
rolled in one. Everyday he would go on a bicycle to deliver medicines.
8. Challenges Faced
• The company that was established in 1951 split in 1995, leaving
Indravadanbhai with barely 2% staff strength.
• The man was faced with the challenge of starting it all over again in
the seventh decade of his life. With his son Rajeev beside him
Indravadanbhai lost no time and started all over again.
• During his second innings, he was forced to take loans at the steep
interest rate of 27%, but this too could not deter him.
• And today,Cadila Pharmaceuticals manufactures and sells
finished formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients
(APIs) in 85 countries.
• Cadila Pharmaceuticals has its formulation manufacturing
facilities at Dholka, Gujarat (India); Samba, Jammu (India) and
at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The 2 API manufacturing facilities are
located at Ankleshwar, Gujarat.

(AMA) in the early nineties.
• Mr. Modi has often been felicitated. The prominent among them include
Express Pharma Pulse Life Time Achievement Award, Gujarat Chamber

pharmaceuticals, entrepreneurship and invaluable services to

Mr. Modi has also been honoured by Indian Drug Manufacturers’
Association for his priceless contribution to the pharmaceuticals
industry.
He received “Life time Achievement Award” on the occasion of 3rd
Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Sumit by Pharmaceutical Leadership
(Pharma Magazine) at Mumbai in 2010 and figured as “The Legendry”
in the coffee table book by Bhaskar group in 2011.
He headed the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association and was Vice-
president of CHEMEXCIL.
