Frugal Innovation is about doing more with less. Entrepreneurs and innovators in emerging markets have to devise low cost strategies to either tap or circumvent institutional complexities and resource limitations to innovate, develop and deliver products and services to low income users with little purchasing power, often at mass scale and arguably in a sustainable manner. My DPhil research seeks to understand this institutionally complex, constraint-based, and low cost innovation which is designed in or for emerging market contexts.

Lucent Wastewater Solutions s about the profitable commercialization of a multi-module, highly scalable bio-reactor called a Microbial Fuel Cell used in wastewater management; it effectively reduces pollution to meet local regulation, inhibits the production of the potent green house gas Methane, produces renewable “alternative energy” in the form of electricity or hydrogen, all with no additional energy input. Compared to current technology it is 80% less in capital cost, 250% smaller in size, enables “Go Green” PR by shrinking carbon footprint, increases bottom line profits by slashing operational cost.

Design engineers may work in a team along with other designers to create the drawings necessary for prototyping and production, or in the case of buildings, for construction. However, with the advent of CAD and solid modeling software, the design engineers may create the drawings themselves, or perhaps with the help of many corporate service providers.
Using Information Visualization to prepare for ChangeMakingHumantific
Humantific has been integrating data and information visualization into purposeful Strategic Cocreation for more than ten years. To do that we call upon and share with our clients a much broader innovation enabling toolset than is typically found in the current evolution of the data visualization community. Our "secret innovation enabling sauce" is the hybrid combination of advanced cocreation skills combined with deep visual sensemaking capacity. We share that hybrid combination with our clients and teach organizational leaders how to build SenseMaking for ChangeMaking capacity in their own organizations. Making sense of just the data part is a sub-sub-subset of what Humantific is already doing. Executing multidimensional SenseMaking in the context of ChangeMaking is the much heavier lift.

GreenSpur Wind manufacturers have designed a new low-cost ferrite-based direct-drive permanent magnet generator (DD-PMG) for the wind turbine market. It is the only company in the world known to be developing a ferrite-based design capable of multi-Megawatt power generation.
Eliminating the price and supply risks associated with using rare earth magnets the design has been optimised through extensive R&D that identified a highly innovative magnetic arrangement, which delivers maximum output for the lowest material cost and weight.
In this presentation, GreenSpur Wind showcased how they have progressed their PEMD development rapidly through research and design stages and how they plan to work with a dynamic UK supply chain to bring their highly disruptive technology to a multi-£bn global wind energy market.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

21. Theory vs. Practice
In theory, there is no difference
between theory
and practice.
But in practice there is.
22. Perfection vs. Optimization
Tank Battle : World War-II
German TIGER tank vs Russian T-34
Counts=5,000
Counts=2,500
Germans Tanks were
highly precise in hitting
their targets .
But
Production with very
tight tolerance limit
slow down the
production of tank
during II-WW
Russian T-34 were not
that accurate . Close
machining tolerances
were maintained only
where it was a must.
Therefore
Russian were able to
deploy the double
strength of tanks.
In the first day 60 Tiger and 328
Russian T-34 were lost. Tiger
emerged as better tank BUT Germans
lost the battle.
23. Obstacles to Workplace Creativity

Google Incorporation: Income from Advertisements
Larry Page and Sergey Brin
•Google began in January 1996, by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, PhD
students at Stanford University.
•Google search engine was different from conventional search engines
because it was based on relevance and importance of page to user
rather than counting how many times the search terms appeared on the
page.
•Because of this new search approach , “PageRank Algorithm”, results
were much refined and related to user. Very soon Google was favourite
search engine world wide.
•But still earning revenue was a million dollar question for Google Team.
• They decided to incorporate user related advertisement along with
search results.
•Now Google is officially bigger than Microsoft Inc according to
NASDAQ.
