Only 1800 companies in India avail of R&D tax benefits, despite many small and medium businesses conducting R&D through problem-solving and product innovation. The Department of Scientific & Industrial Research provides recognition and tax incentives for in-house R&D centers to encourage technology development. Benefits include income tax deductions for R&D expenses and customs duty exemptions. However, lack of awareness of this scheme means that far fewer than the 6000 listed companies and 1.3 million SMEs in India take advantage of the financial and strategic benefits of R&D recognition.
