4. USEMale protagonist/antagonist
● Extremely popular convention in thriller genres
● Portrays men as strong, masculine, fearless
● It was what my audience wanted
The Bourne franchise features a male protagonist
5. Use
Enigma
● Thrillers use enigma deliberately to intensify
the plot and interest the audience
● It is a well known convention for thrillers
● Shown in my film through the John’s intentions
and Brunning’s past not being revealed until
the end
‘The Imitation Game’ is a thriller that uses enigma
throughout
6. USE
Propp’s Theory
Vladimir Propp developed a character theory
for studying media texts and productions,
which indicates that there were 7 broad
character types in the 100 tales he analysed,
which could be applied to other media: The
villain, the hero, the donor, the helper, the
princess, the dispatcher, the false hero.
● ‘No Evidence’ uses a hero, a villain, a false
villain and a donor
8. develop
Intrusiveness
● Many thriller films are particularly intrusive in
that they invade your mind and thinking
● They cause you to really think about what you
have just watched and continue to interpret it
in different ways
● ‘No Evidence’ develops this because it takes
intrusiveness to a whole new level - through
the narrative and camera shots
‘The Shining’ features a few invasive camera shots
which are similar to those in ‘No Evidence’
9. Develop
Homosexuality
● Homosexuality is a convention that has just
recently become a common occurrence in tv
and film
● It is becoming more widely accepted, and
therefore more frequently shown on screen
● ‘No Evidence’ develops this convention
because it has used a padeophilic
homosexual, which is combining a taboo
subject with a touchy convention
11. challenge
Weapon
● A weapon in a thriller film is a common
iconographic features
● ‘No Evidence’ features no obvious weapons
● But it could be argued that the razor used in
one of the key scenes could have been used
as a weapon
