Current Cloud’s offer is becoming day by day wider providing a vibrant technical environment, where SMEs can create innovative solutions and evolve their services. Clouds promise cheap and flexible services to end-users at a much larger scale than before.
The main goal of MODAClouds is to provide a decision support system along with design and runtime environments for early prototyping and automatic deployment of applications on multi-Clouds with guaranteed QoS. Model-driven development combined with novel model-driven risk analysis and quality of service prediction enable developers to specify Cloud-provider independent models enriched with quality parameters, implement these, perform quality prediction, monitor applications at run-time and optimize them based on the feedback, thus filling the gap between design and run-time. Additionally, MODAClouds provides techniques for data mapping and synchronization among multiple Clouds.

Two major sources of uncertainty challenge the development of cloud applications are : (i) the maintenance
cost uncertainty caused by cloud APIs heterogeneity and vendor lock-in; and (ii) the performance uncertainty
caused by virtualization. The MODAClouds project developed an integrated modelling environment to cope with
these challenges. In this paper we report how Softeam leveraged the MODAClouds model-driven methodology
and environment to cloudify its collaborative modelling application called Constellation. The environment supports the modelling of cloud applications using domain-specific UML extensions, integrating specialized tools
by means of model transformations. This paper focuses on three tools: CLOUDML, SPACE4Clouds and LINE.
The first tool, CLOUDML, provides abstractions to represent deployment models at design-time together with
the run-time tool to enact the deployment and adaptation of cloud applications. LINE and SPACE4Cloud allow developers to analyse the application performance, considering common causes of uncertainty in virtualized
environments.

Accumulo Summit 2014: Addressing big data challenges through innovative archi...Accumulo Summit
The ability to collect and analyze large amounts of data is a growing problem within the scientific community. The growing gap between data and users calls for innovative tools that address the challenges faced by big data volume, velocity and variety. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lincoln Laboratory (MIT LL) is not immune to these challenges and has developed a set of tools that address many of these challenges.
Big data volume stresses the storage, memory, and compute capacity of a computing system and requires access to a computing cloud. Choosing the right cloud is problem specific. Currently, there are four multi-billion dollar ecosystems that dominate the cloud computing environment: enterprise clouds, big data clouds, SQL database clouds, and supercomputing clouds. Each cloud ecosystem has its own hardware, software, conferences, and business markets. The broad nature of business big data challenges make it unlikely that one cloud ecosystem can meet its needs and solutions are likely to require the tools and techniques from more than one cloud ecosystem. The MIT Supercloud was developed to address this challenge. To our knowledge, the MIT SuperCloud is the only deployed cloud system that allows all four ecosystems to co-exist without sacrificing performance or functionality.
The velocity of big data velocity stresses the rate at which data can be absorbed and meaningful answers produced. Led by the NSA, a Common Big Data Architecture (CBDA) was developed for the U.S. government based on the Google Big Table NoSQL approach and is now in wide use. MIT/LL played a leading role in developing the CBDA and is a leader in adapting the CBDA to a variety of big data challenges.
Big data variety may present the largest challenge and greatest opportunities. The promise of big data is the ability to correlate diverse and heterogeneous data to form new insights. The centerpiece of the CBDA is the NSA developed Apache Accumulo database (capable of millions of entries/second) and the MIT/LL developed D4M schema. These technologies allow vast quantities of highly diverse data (text, computer logs, and social media data, etc.) to be automatically ingested into a common schema that enables rapid query and correlation of every element.
The talk will concentrate on how we utilize the aforementioned technologies in our mission to apply advanced technology to problems of national security.

CloudLightning - Multiclouds: Challenges and Current SolutionsCloudLightning
In this presentation, Prof Dana Petcu (Institute e-Austria Timisoara, West University of Timisoara) discusses the concepts, challenges and requirements relating to multicloud architectures.
Prof Petcu also addresses differences between existing approaches in dealing with multiple clouds and the requirements for a support platform for a multicloud infrastructure.
The presentation includes a case study – the MODAClouds Project – that aims to support system developers and operators in exploiting multiple Clouds for the same system in addition to systems migration (full or partial) between clouds as needed.
Finally, Prof Petcu addresses the lessons learned from MODAClouds and similar EU projects and their application to the CloudLightning Project (@_cloudlightning).
This presentation was given at the National Conference on Cloud Computing in Dublin City University on 14th April 2015.
The presentation video follows on at the end of the slides.
From the Desktop to the Multi-clouds: The case of ModelioSaaSMarcos Almeida
The advent of cloud computing is an opportunity to companies offering client-server services to migrate to a Software as a Service (SaaS) kind of business model. This kind of business model is based on having companies offering services on the cloud accessible by means of web interfaces and protocols. This comes in opposition to the traditional (client-server) model in which software packages need to be downloaded, installed and maintained directly by clients. Therefore, the SaaS could allow the definition of high level services, removing the burden of configuring and managing servers from clients. In the point of view of the service providers, this transition is not easy. Concerns such as vendor neutral design, scalability, (self-)adaptation and monitoring of running applications need to be dealt with. The MODAClouds FP7 EU project proposes to deal with all these challenges and it is going to use ModelioSaaS as a use case. ModelioSaaS is a software as a service product to be offered by SOFTEAM by means of the migration of its existing client-server based products. The main contributions of this paper are therefore providing an account, from the industrial point of view, of the context surrounding this migration and the constraints it needs to comply to. These constraints will be presented in the form of functional and non-functional requirements along with their rationale. This paper presents our current view of the architecture of ModelioSaaS that will enable this move and the gaps that we intend to fill be means of the MODAClouds platform.
SVA discusses the opportunities and challenges they have encountered during their journey with customers, using mainframe offloading projects as an example.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
