MEANING AND TYPES OF sadaqah
Islam is based on inculcating positive values in life, such as hope, love, peace, unity, honesty, and faith in Allah. sadaqah is
among these values which reflects on the best of all human characteristics – generosity, benevolence, and kindness. The act
of giving charity is a clear proof of one’s eeman (faith). Scholars suggest giving sadaqah is one of the best ways to gain Allah’s
blessings. In addition, the act of charity also provides a sense of inner peace and happiness.
• Meaning of sadaqah
The word ‘sadaqah’ literally means ‘righteousness’. In Islam, it refers to a virtuous deed or an act of kindness done without the
expectation of getting anything in return. This voluntary charitable act does not necessarily have to be monetary aid. It can also
be as simple as greeting someone with a smile or lending someone a helping hand.
• Power of sadaqah
Being regarded as one of the most rewarding act, the power of sadaqah comes from the intention of person performing it.
Sadaqah can protect one from hellfire and benefit a person in this life.
• Two types of sadaqah:
1. ‘Sadaqah Jariyah’ will benefit the recipients more than once and that good deed will continue rewarding the giver even
after their death. Example, teaching someone a valuable skill, building an institution of good, such as a mosque, school, or
hospital, building a means of provision, such as a well, teaching someone valuable knowledge, through books, lessons etc.
planting a tree, creating a home or shelter for people or animals, inventing something of use for people or animals etc.
MEANING AND TYPES OF sadaqah
Types of sadqah:
1)Sadaqah
Sadqah is when a person makes a charitable donation or does something that may benefit someone else, an animal, or the earth.
Acts of Sadaqah are one-off and can includes things like: an acts of kindness as in volunteering for something , helping neighbors,
aiding the lost, or simply smiling at strangers, constitute Sadaqah.
One-time financial contributions to individuals or causes, like supporting an animal shelter or assisting the impoverished, fall under
Sadaqah.
2)) Sadaqah Jariyah: The continuous charity
Sadaqah Jariyah is a form of charity that provides ongoing benefit. For completing this act of sadqah jariyah, Allah (SWT) gives
rewards even after the person have left this earth. For as long as your charatable act continues to benefit a person, animal or the
planet, you will be bestowed with the relative rewards. Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah:
it includes contributions like building a school, well or a mosque, sponsoring an orphan or planting a tree, which will continue to help
others until the Day of Judgment.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), emphasized its reward when he said: “When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a
continuing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a child who prays for them,” (Muslim – 1631).

[Charity is] for the poor who have been restricted for the cause of Allah, unable to move about in the land. An ignorant [person] would think
them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at
all]. And whatever you spend of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.
Benefits of giving sadaqah in the light of
hadith
Reminder!
Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet (pbuh), said, “Charity does not decrease wealth, ….”
Sahih Muslim 2588.
• Charity diverts calamity
The Prophet (pbuh), said “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.”
Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 589
• Charity helps cure illness
“Treat your sick ones with charity.” (Saheeh al-Jaami)
• Charity extinguishes the anger of Allah
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported: The Prophet (pbuh), said, “Carrying out
good deeds protects one from an evil death, giving charity secretly extinguishes the
anger of Allah …” Al Mu’jamul Kabir of Imam Tabarani, Hadith: 8014
Benefits of giving sadaqah in the light of
hadith
• It can provide us shade on the day of judgment
The Prophet (pbuh), said, "Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on
the day when there will be no shade except His. They are:
One of them being:
A person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what
his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity).
Sahih al-bukhari 1423
In another hadith he (pbuh) said “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will
be his charity.” (Tirmidhi)
• Charity protects from punishment of hell
Adi ibn Hatim reported: The Prophet (pbuh), said, “Guard yourself against the Hellfire,
even with half of a date in charity. If one cannot find it, then with a kind word.” Sahih
al-bukhari 6540, Sahih Muslim 1016
• It can be your source to enter Jannah-through Baab-us-sadaqah
The Prophet (pbuh), said, “…and he who is from those who give in charity will be
called from the gate of charity. Sahih al-bukhari
Examples of giving sadaqah set by the prophet (pbuh)
1) *Zakat*: The Prophet emphasized the
importance of giving Zakat, which is
obligatory charity for Muslims. This charity is
a means of redistributing wealth to those in
need and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
2) *Sadaqah*: Beyond Zakat, the Prophet
encouraged giving Sadaqah, voluntary
charity, as a way to help those in need and
purify one's wealth. He himself was known for
his generosity and would give freely to those
who asked, regardless of their background or
beliefs.
3) *Support for the Poor and Needy*: The
Prophet cared deeply for the less fortunate
members of society. He encouraged his
followers to take care of orphans, widows,
and the impoverished, emphasizing the
importance of compassion and social justice.
4) *Kindness to Animals*: The Prophet taught
kindness not only to humans but also to
animals. He instructed his followers to feed
and care for animals, and he condemned any
form of cruelty towards them.
Examples of giving sadaqah set by the CALIPHS
According to the teachings of Islam, the giving of sadaqah serves a few functions. sadaqah first and foremost acts as
expiation for sins. The believers are asked to give sadaqah immediately following any transgression. Voluntary
almsgiving can also compensate for any shortcoming in the past payment of zakat.
Sadaqah also gives protection against all kinds of evil. sadaqah wards off affliction in this world, and punishment on
Judgment Day. It is therefore recommended to give sadaqah by night and by day, in secret and in public, to seek
Allah’s pleasure. The constant giving of a little is said to please Allah more than the occasional giving of much.
We have shining examples of generosity set by the pious caliphs. Once when the Prophet (pbuh) urged them to give
sadaqah, Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra) brought half of what he owned, but only to find that once again Abu Bakr (ra) had
outdone him by giving away all that he had.
Examples of giving sadaqah set by the CALIPHS
There is another very interesting example of the generosity set by Uthman (ra), the third caliph. During the
caliphate of Abu Bakr, people were in great distress due to a drought. The caliph told them to remain patient, for
Allah would soon relieve them. Before long Uthman’s caravan arrived with its merchandise from Syria. There were
one thousand camels in the caravan, all of them loaded with wheat and food items from Syria. When the news got
around Madinah, all the great traders of Madinah rapidly converged to Uthman’s house. When he emerged to meet
them, they expressed their urgent desire to purchase the foodstuffs so that they could pass it on to those
townspeople who needed it.
Ushering them inside, he asked them how much profit they were prepared to give him on this merchandise.
“Twelve dirhams on every ten dirhams’ worth,” they replied. “But I can get a better price,” said Uthman. “Then we’ll
give you fourteen,” they said. Uthman again said that he could get a better price, whereupon they put their price up
to fifteen dirhams. But Uthman stood firm. Bewildered by his attitude, they asked him who could give him a better
price, considering that all of the merchants of Madinah were already assembled there. “I can get ten dirhams for
every dirham’s worth,” he told them, then asked them if any one of them could give a better price than that. No one
spoke up. Then Uthman recited the verse of the Qur’an which says that those who do good will be rewarded
tenfold (6:160). He explained to them that he intended to give away all the wheat and other foodstuffs to the needy
people of Madinah.

Importance of Giving Sadaqah in Islam.pptx

  • 1. IMPORTANCE OF GIVING sadaqah IN ISLAM Presentation made by ILSA ASLAM- HAREEM JAFFER- KHANSA JAWED-NISHA ZEHRA- ELSA MALIK
  • 2. Contents O1 Meaning and types of sadaqah. O2 What does Quran say about sadaqah? O3 Benefits of giving sadaqah in the light of hadith. O5 Examples of giving sadaqah set by the caliphs. O4 Examples of giving sadaqah set by the Prophet (pbuh).
  • 3. MEANING AND TYPES OF sadaqah Islam is based on inculcating positive values in life, such as hope, love, peace, unity, honesty, and faith in Allah. sadaqah is among these values which reflects on the best of all human characteristics – generosity, benevolence, and kindness. The act of giving charity is a clear proof of one’s eeman (faith). Scholars suggest giving sadaqah is one of the best ways to gain Allah’s blessings. In addition, the act of charity also provides a sense of inner peace and happiness. • Meaning of sadaqah The word ‘sadaqah’ literally means ‘righteousness’. In Islam, it refers to a virtuous deed or an act of kindness done without the expectation of getting anything in return. This voluntary charitable act does not necessarily have to be monetary aid. It can also be as simple as greeting someone with a smile or lending someone a helping hand. • Power of sadaqah Being regarded as one of the most rewarding act, the power of sadaqah comes from the intention of person performing it. Sadaqah can protect one from hellfire and benefit a person in this life. • Two types of sadaqah: 1. ‘Sadaqah Jariyah’ will benefit the recipients more than once and that good deed will continue rewarding the giver even after their death. Example, teaching someone a valuable skill, building an institution of good, such as a mosque, school, or hospital, building a means of provision, such as a well, teaching someone valuable knowledge, through books, lessons etc. planting a tree, creating a home or shelter for people or animals, inventing something of use for people or animals etc.
  • 4. MEANING AND TYPES OF sadaqah Types of sadqah: 1)Sadaqah Sadqah is when a person makes a charitable donation or does something that may benefit someone else, an animal, or the earth. Acts of Sadaqah are one-off and can includes things like: an acts of kindness as in volunteering for something , helping neighbors, aiding the lost, or simply smiling at strangers, constitute Sadaqah. One-time financial contributions to individuals or causes, like supporting an animal shelter or assisting the impoverished, fall under Sadaqah. 2)) Sadaqah Jariyah: The continuous charity Sadaqah Jariyah is a form of charity that provides ongoing benefit. For completing this act of sadqah jariyah, Allah (SWT) gives rewards even after the person have left this earth. For as long as your charatable act continues to benefit a person, animal or the planet, you will be bestowed with the relative rewards. Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah: it includes contributions like building a school, well or a mosque, sponsoring an orphan or planting a tree, which will continue to help others until the Day of Judgment. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), emphasized its reward when he said: “When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a continuing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a child who prays for them,” (Muslim – 1631).

  • 7. Benefits of giving sadaqah in the light of hadith Reminder! Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet (pbuh), said, “Charity does not decrease wealth, ….” Sahih Muslim 2588. • Charity diverts calamity The Prophet (pbuh), said “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 589 • Charity helps cure illness “Treat your sick ones with charity.” (Saheeh al-Jaami) • Charity extinguishes the anger of Allah Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported: The Prophet (pbuh), said, “Carrying out good deeds protects one from an evil death, giving charity secretly extinguishes the anger of Allah …” Al Mu’jamul Kabir of Imam Tabarani, Hadith: 8014
  • 8. Benefits of giving sadaqah in the light of hadith • It can provide us shade on the day of judgment The Prophet (pbuh), said, "Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are: One of them being: A person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity). Sahih al-bukhari 1423 In another hadith he (pbuh) said “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Tirmidhi) • Charity protects from punishment of hell Adi ibn Hatim reported: The Prophet (pbuh), said, “Guard yourself against the Hellfire, even with half of a date in charity. If one cannot find it, then with a kind word.” Sahih al-bukhari 6540, Sahih Muslim 1016 • It can be your source to enter Jannah-through Baab-us-sadaqah The Prophet (pbuh), said, “…and he who is from those who give in charity will be called from the gate of charity. Sahih al-bukhari
  • 9. Examples of giving sadaqah set by the prophet (pbuh) 1) *Zakat*: The Prophet emphasized the importance of giving Zakat, which is obligatory charity for Muslims. This charity is a means of redistributing wealth to those in need and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. 2) *Sadaqah*: Beyond Zakat, the Prophet encouraged giving Sadaqah, voluntary charity, as a way to help those in need and purify one's wealth. He himself was known for his generosity and would give freely to those who asked, regardless of their background or beliefs. 3) *Support for the Poor and Needy*: The Prophet cared deeply for the less fortunate members of society. He encouraged his followers to take care of orphans, widows, and the impoverished, emphasizing the importance of compassion and social justice. 4) *Kindness to Animals*: The Prophet taught kindness not only to humans but also to animals. He instructed his followers to feed and care for animals, and he condemned any form of cruelty towards them.
  • 10. Examples of giving sadaqah set by the CALIPHS According to the teachings of Islam, the giving of sadaqah serves a few functions. sadaqah first and foremost acts as expiation for sins. The believers are asked to give sadaqah immediately following any transgression. Voluntary almsgiving can also compensate for any shortcoming in the past payment of zakat. Sadaqah also gives protection against all kinds of evil. sadaqah wards off affliction in this world, and punishment on Judgment Day. It is therefore recommended to give sadaqah by night and by day, in secret and in public, to seek Allah’s pleasure. The constant giving of a little is said to please Allah more than the occasional giving of much. We have shining examples of generosity set by the pious caliphs. Once when the Prophet (pbuh) urged them to give sadaqah, Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra) brought half of what he owned, but only to find that once again Abu Bakr (ra) had outdone him by giving away all that he had.
  • 11. Examples of giving sadaqah set by the CALIPHS There is another very interesting example of the generosity set by Uthman (ra), the third caliph. During the caliphate of Abu Bakr, people were in great distress due to a drought. The caliph told them to remain patient, for Allah would soon relieve them. Before long Uthman’s caravan arrived with its merchandise from Syria. There were one thousand camels in the caravan, all of them loaded with wheat and food items from Syria. When the news got around Madinah, all the great traders of Madinah rapidly converged to Uthman’s house. When he emerged to meet them, they expressed their urgent desire to purchase the foodstuffs so that they could pass it on to those townspeople who needed it. Ushering them inside, he asked them how much profit they were prepared to give him on this merchandise. “Twelve dirhams on every ten dirhams’ worth,” they replied. “But I can get a better price,” said Uthman. “Then we’ll give you fourteen,” they said. Uthman again said that he could get a better price, whereupon they put their price up to fifteen dirhams. But Uthman stood firm. Bewildered by his attitude, they asked him who could give him a better price, considering that all of the merchants of Madinah were already assembled there. “I can get ten dirhams for every dirham’s worth,” he told them, then asked them if any one of them could give a better price than that. No one spoke up. Then Uthman recited the verse of the Qur’an which says that those who do good will be rewarded tenfold (6:160). He explained to them that he intended to give away all the wheat and other foodstuffs to the needy people of Madinah.
