Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835, moved as a child with his family to Hannibal, Missouri on the Mississippi River. He had to leave Hannibal at the start of the Civil War in 1861. His first literary success came in 1865 with the publication of his short story "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" in newspapers. He published his first book in 1867 containing this story. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon and the couple moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he published his best known works over the next 20 years.
