Firstly – if you didn't realise The olympics was huge! 204 Olympic and 164 Paralympic teams 10,490 Olympic and 4,200 Paralympic athletes 20,000 media from over 200 countries 70,000 volunteers 200,000 Games-time workforce 11 million tickets 170+ venues 26 Olympic and 20 paralympic sports Over 800 events leading to medals
But for an Olympic host city and especially a city like london – its not just about the sport and the park and sporting venues – its much wider than that. London optimised its status as Olympic host city by running a series of activities before the games as well as during London positioned the whole year as GREAT – and the summer as a ‘SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER’ Here is an example of some of the activities London ran to build and create excitement around the Games The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements. Since 2008, the Cultural Olympiad has featured programmes and projects inspired by London 2012, funded by our principal funders and sponsors. As part of the Cultural Olympiad: More than 16 million people across the UK took have taken part in or attended performances. Over 169,000 people have attended more than 8,300 workshops. More than 3.7 million people took part in nearly 3,700 Open Weekend events. Some 2,500 cultural projects have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark [link to Inspire]. The culmination of the Cultural Olympiad is the London 2012 Festival , providing over 10 million chances to see free world-class events throughout the UK. The London 2012 Festival is the biggest festival the UK has ever seen. From 21 June – 9 September 2012, artists from all over the world are coming together in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. At the halfway point in the London 2012 Festival, 12 million people had attended a Festival event. There are 10 million free opportunities to get involved in the Festival, as well as a host of Countdown events. The London 2012 Festival website has details of everything in the Festival – new events are being added all the time! BT London Live's two-week programme of free live music The Mayor of London bought to you BT London Live, in partnership with The Royal Parks and London Borough of Tower Hamlets. BT London Live screened the Olympic and Paralympic Games daily at the iconic Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park and Victoria Park. In addition to live screenings of the games, there was live music, sports activities and cultural entertainment. People were able to simply walk up for FREE access – you didn’t need a ticket to get in! Olympic torch relay An Olympic torch relay will tour the UK for 70 days ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games. From 19 May 2012, the Olympic torch relay will tour the UK in the run-up to the London Games - taking 70 days, carried by 8,000 torchbearers. Organisers say 95% of the country's population should be within one hour of the route, which ends on 27 July with the lighting of the cauldron during the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, Stratford. Stroll: Discovery Trails 27 July - 9 September Stroll Discovery Trails provided the opportunity to take a stroll along some of London’s most scenic streets. We put together six unique walking routes across the historic city centre that took people on a journey of discovery to the greatest sights and sounds of London. The trails were bought to life by our official Games mascots Mandeville and Wenlock, who highlighted some great photo opportunities. Each Mascot was individually designed, animating the routes in a unique way that captured the spirit of London. A large number of people tried out all of the trails and sent us photos of their favourite London 2012 Games mascot. Dressing and animating the city Dressing and animating the host city With the eyes of the world upon us, London’s going to get a gorgeous new look this summer as the city dresses up for the 2012 Games with bunting, banners and more. Following the celebrations for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, London is getting dressed for the next celebration. The capital is be transformed into a blaze of colour with flags, banners, bunting and iconic sporting imagery adorning our streets, iconic public places and buildings. More than 6,000 colourful lamppost banners, almost 25 kilometres of bunting - equivalent to more than 2,000 Routemaster buses - and 638sq metres of building decorations will be on display all over London this summer. The first decorations have gone up in several areas – for example Stratford, Harrow, and Kingston - and will be followed by other localities across the capital over the coming weeks. Mindful of our commitments to a sustainable Games, all dressing owned by the GLA will be reused or recycled, and we have encouraged London boroughs to explore sustainable disposal options for their own locally owned dressing, to minimise the amount of materials that end up in landfill. The Mayor has also commissioned some special, eye-catching architectural installations designed to surprise and inspire people during Games-time, including giant shot-putts and javelins, and interactive attractions. The “look” of the Games is one of the top three memories for visitors in an Olympic host city. This is why the Mayor has given funding to help every borough look its best. Wherever you are in London, Colour will bring the Games celebrations to life for Londoners and visitors alike, and will evoke a feeling of a festive atmosphere. So even though there’s plenty going on, take a bit of time to look around you — London’s going to look great. Next few slides are some exanples of how London dressed to impress when all the eyes of the world were upon it
Light projections were screened on our historical and monumental buildings such as parliament
ADDITIONAL SLIDES WITH PICS IF YOU WANT THEM Bottom right shows our game-makers volunteers – a sample of some of the 70.000 people who volunteered Bottom left of the para logo on the national portrait gallery The Paralympic motto is "Spirit in Motion". The symbol of the Paralympic Games is composed of three "agitos", coloured red, blue, and green, encircling a single point, on a white field. The agito ("I move" in Latin ) is a symbol of movement in the shape of an asymmetrical crescent.
London used the mascotts to great effect – creating mascot statues which were placed around the capital
In what ways has London been showcased that is different from other host cities? Events have taken place at a variety of venues, both new and existing, highlighting the true diversity of London, which not many other cities have. Coupled with this has been its seamless fusion of heritage and modernity, of tradition and innovation: where else could you watch the beach volleyball on what is the Queen’s Horse Guards Parade?
Londons venues and spaces exceeded all expectations – whether being used for Olympic sport, housing events etc or being taken over by other countries for use as an official national olympic committee hospitality house Each National Olympic Committee will be hosting its own events to showcase its country during the Games next summer. This in itself brings with it a host of opportunities for companies supplying the hospitality and/or the events industry. Some of the houses were open to the public – a great way for the country to showcase itself to the international audience in London for the games Some of the houses were closed to the public Here are some examples Austria House at Trinity House Brazil House )casa brazil) at somerset house ( 25, 000 visitors ) Casa italia – italy house at quII Czech Republic - Business Design Centre Holland House - Alexandra Palace (6000 VISITORS A DAY) Qatar House - Savoy Place Other houses included Celebration Africa (ANOCA) Brazil – Somerset House Belgium – Inner Temple Canada – Canadian High Commission China - Richmond Croatia - The Pelham Czech Republic - Business Design Centre France - Old Billingsgate Germany - Museum of London Docklands & MS Deutschland Holland - Alexandra Palace Italy – QEII Centre Jamaica - Finsbury Park Japan - No. 4 Hamilton Place Romania – 30 Pavillion Road Serbia – Serbian Embassy Slovakia – IOD, 116 Pall Mall Switzerland – Glaziers Hall, Southwark Cathedral & the Mug House
Great new venues for events popped up during Games time – great for small gatherings as well as part of a bigger incentive programme
WHY LONDON Hosting any major event improves a city – whether its in the physical aspects of the city and whats available and upgraded, esp for event planners – or the impressions and perception of a city through hosting a major event It all equals to a great opportunity for event planners to grasp the chance to experience a city at a time like no other during the event – or afterwards when YOU can benefit from the developments the city has undergone – which all equal, at least it certainly does in London's case – the city becoming an event better space for events
You get the best return in London – more delegates, higher quality attendees and speakers, plus a range of free activities in the city which places London streaks ahead of any other city It couldn’t be easier to get to London – and now with new and improved transport in the city – its even easier to get around London and the rest of the UK Our capacity for accommodation has increased dramatically – now with 125,000 bedrooms We have always had a diverse range and choice for accommodation and venues to suit any requirement and any budget – we have now put the icing on the cake with even more choice for you, - from over 1,000 event venues - to make your event the BEST yet Our clients have often quoted the ‘London effect’ – delegates are attracted to attractive cities – and London is certainly one of those. After hosting the best event on Earth – the London effect has more than doubled! ---
A legacy beyond locations that’s here to stay The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has given the UK capital much more than new and enhanced meeting venues. It’s also improved every aspect of London’s services to the events and business tourism industries. In turn, this has moved London’s offering to an unprecedented level of sophistication and expertise. Here are just some of the areas where London – and therefore the world – will benefit: People: hosting the biggest event in the world has genuinely enhanced the existing event industry skills London already possessed – and showcased the city’s ability to welcome global visitors to the capital. Pride: there is a renewed sense of pride in London. This is exemplified by the volunteering culture which now exists. This can all be brought to bear on future events, providing a knowledgeable, human face to welcome the world. Partnership: the Games showed how partnership in its many forms can be harnessed to deliver world-class events. This includes partnership across and between the 33 London boroughs and crucially, between the city, event owners and key stakeholders. Perception: With the scrutiny of the world upon it, London delivered on time, on spec and on budget. A global audience of almost 5 billion watched the Games. All will have been impressed by the city’s professionalism. London’s global reputation has ascended new heights. Product and places: London’s overall infrastructure has improved as a result of London 2012. A £6.5 billion transport upgrade now sits alongside the existing visitor and retail attractions. It also has over 102,000 new hotel bedrooms – and they’re all here to stay, literally. Personality: the events of summer 2012 have revealed London’s all-round personality. You can rely on its great organisational skills, and its ability to mix heritage with innovation. A few years ago, who would have thought about Beach Volleyball at Horse Guards Parade? Permutations: London 2012 showcased to the world how its open spaces could be adapted for visitor and competitor use. It also showed how temporary (pop-up) structures and spaces could be created to great effect – and how cultural programmes can engage a wider audience. Pipeline: as a result of all the above, there has been an upsurge in enquiries about hosting major events in London. The message to the events and business tourism world is: ‘If you want to come to London, you’d better talk to us as soon as possible’. Overall, London has been seen to be a fun place to live and work – and a brilliant setting for unforgettable events.
The London Legacy Development Corporation is tasked with the £292m transformation of the Olympic Park which will not fully re-open for almost two years. Transformation work includes building new bridges and roads and converting venues such as the aquatics centre What types of events can we expect to see at the Olympic Park in the future? Following the Games this summer, the park will reopen in July 2013 as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with seven new hospitality areas including the ArcelorMittal Orbit – the tallest sculpture in the UK – which will be able to host 200 guests for a reception with fabulous views across the stadium, the Aquatics Centre and the Velodrome will also become key venues for gala events and the Multiuse Arena which is known as the ‘Copper Box’ will become London third biggest indoor arena. The south end of the park will also offer temporary exhibition and conference venue space as well as the actual stadium. How long will the whole redevelopment take? Post the 2012 Games, The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will transform over a 25-year development process to become a destination of international distinction, a thriving new metropolitan district in London, and a focal point for the social and economic regeneration of east London.
The South Park Hub in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the beating heart of the Park. In the shadow of the ArcelorMittal Orbit and the Stadium, it offers contrasting, dynamic spaces. Whether day or night, outdoor or indoor, frivolous or formal, intimate or imposing, there’s a space which will energise your audience. The South Park Hub is made for more intimate events with a creative feel, from a drinks reception on the roof terrace overlooking the South Park, to a private concert in the gardens. 170m² Flexible event space 150 Capacity for dinner or drinks Data available Spring 2014
Few venues are as flexible as the Multi-Use Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. As the third largest arena in London it has the scale and setting to host a range of cultural, performance, community and sporting events. Surrounding the central sprung wooden floor space are a range of associated facilities including nine concessions, a café, meeting rooms, hospitality spaces, a fitness centre and crèche. The Multi-Use Arena is equally suitable for tournaments or trade shows, conferences, gigs or gala dinner, even Cabinet meetings. 2,743m² Field of Play L64m x W42m Lower Platform Space 7,500 Capacity for Conferences 2,000 Capacity for Gala Dinners Available from Summer 2013
The Zaha Hadid designed Aquatics Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is already one of the iconic structures of London 2012. But what happens on the inside is what really matters. Movable floors within the giant pool hall can alter depths for different kinds of swimming activities or to create a dry space for exceptional events. The Aquatics Centre is perfect for events designed to inspire. From poolside gala dinners to special team building days in and around the pools where records were set. 2 x 50m Swimming Pools 1 x 25m Diving pool 2,500 Capacity for seated events 500 Capacity for Poolside dining or drinks A truly iconic building catering for all levels of swimming ability and aquatic disciplines The Aquatics Centre sits on the main gateway into the Park. With two 50m pools, it will provide an important legacy for London, which has only two of this size currently. Following its transformation after the Games, the Aquatics Centre will cater for all levels of swimming ability and aquatic disciplines. It will offer an activity programme including a range of aquatic fitness sessions, a comprehensive learn to swim programme, coaching in water polo, synchronised swimming, diving, triathlon and sub aqua. London, national and international swimming legacy The centre will be open to the local community and schools. At national and international level, seating accommodation and a range of facilities will enable the venues to cater for major events including national and European events. Triathlon England and British Swimming are planning on using the venue regularly, and a range of events are being considered. In January 2012, we announced that Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) will operate the Aquatics Centre for 10 years starting in 2013, along with the Multi-Use Arena. The social enterprise currently oversees the management of over 100 public leisure centres across the south of England and in York, employing around 5,000 people, all locally recruited. With an anticipated 800,000 visitors a year, the Aquatics Centre will be a thriving community asset open to all where individuals, families, people with disabilities, school children and the UK’s best sporting talent can all swim and train under the same roof. The Development Corporation and GLL are also working with a host of National Governing Bodies for sport, including British Swimming and Sport England, to ensure that the programming meets the requirements for athlete training. Key facts During the Games the Aquatics Centre will house up to 17,500 spectators After the Games there will be 2,500 permanent seats, expandable to 3,500 seats 10-lane competition pool (50m x 25m x 3m) and an 8-lane training pool (50m x 21m x 2m) Separate diving pool (25m x 21m x 5m) with 1m, 3m, 5m, 7.5m and 10m diving boards Moveable floors for all pools. It says something when you host an event within a work of art. Designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond, the ArcelorMittal Orbit in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the UK’s tallest sculpture. Standing 22m higher than the Statue of Liberty, it offers unique views across the Park and Greater London from two glass-enclosed platforms both of which are available to hire. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is ideal for intimate yet impactful events, from drinks receptions and fine dining to press launches and business briefings. Approx 270m² Upper Platform Floor space Approx 190 m² Lower Platform Space 300 Across two levels Available from Spring 2014

Its not just venues – london and the wider UK has also seen improvements and developments in transport – making London an even easier city to get around £6.5 billion has been invested in upgrading and extending transport links. This means there will be a transport legacy that will benefit the country long after the Games have ended. London Underground extra capacity on the Jubilee line with a signalling upgrade extra capacity on the Central Line Southfields step-free and Green Park will be step-free before the Games, a vital accessibility hub Stratford International station, and class 395 high-speed domestic trains that will, during the Games, provide the Javelin® shuttle service between St Pancras, Stratford International and Ebbsfleet. Stratford Regional Station London 2012 is investing £125 million to treble capacity and increase accessibility at Stratford Regional Station, where the number of passengers is expected to double to more than 80,000 at peak hours by 2016. Accessible transport One of the key principles of the 2012 Games is that they will be “the most accessible Games ever”. Cross rail – coming in 2017
Why now Why should you choose a city which has just hosted the olympics – or in fact any major event
What should agencies do to capitalise on their Olympics’ involvement? Agencies that have been directly involved with the Olympic Games should use their experience to harness future opportunities, showcasing their successful involvement with the Games – subject to client and LOCOG permissions – in order to demonstrate their own success and involvement during a time when London delivered the greatest event on the planet. The Olympic Park and other venues have provided an opportunity for live events during the Games, but how will they benefit the events industry post-2012? Ahead of the Games, over £11bn worth of investment has taken place across the city and with that size of economic investment comes a long-term confidence in a city, one which business visitors and event organisers will benefit from long after the Olympic Games has left town. The opening of these great new venues will provide fantastic opportunities for the events industry to harness exposure to new audiences and capitalise on a changing industry backdrop. How you can use the Olympic / major events of the future opportunity Many UK and overseas businesses are planning to bring their clients and staff and immerse them in the celebratory atmosphere, even if they don’t have tickets for the Games / major events themselves. This environment will inspire and motivate, while providing the perfect backdrop for meetings and events . – the same can be said for other major events post Games
Tony Barnard, marketing director for Prestige Ticketing said the company provided a total of 80,000 hospitality covers during the Games. Prior to the opening ceremony, Prestige had sold around 90 per cent of its tickets, but once the Olympics were open for business, interest hit its peak. “We were selling steadily before the Games – but once the hype started, the phones didn’t stop. We had less than 10 per cent left at the time. At that late stage it was mainly UKcalls,” he said. Barnard added the service and standards were a top priority for Prestige: “The response from clients has been incredible – we set ourselves to build a new standard for hospitality – a new class. Olympic legacy By the year 2016, the Olympic Park Legacy Company anticipates that up to 2,000 events will be held annually in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with a real focus on sport and entertainment and will include areas such as a 2,000 square metre event lawn and possible temporary venues for exhibitions and conferences . In total, there’s potential for spaces of up to 60,000 capacity across the Park. There will also be: New and improved venues and hotels A £ 20 billion investment across the London Underground Extension of the Docklands Light Railway Nine new cycle routes Companies should also consider their own legacy . IHG, for example, is working with an academy in the Olympic borough of Newham to run hospitality management courses. “ Not only does it provide kids with a qualification but we’re also training a workforce to potentially manage our new properties in this regenerated area of the capital,” IHG head of London 2012
How incentives were held during the Games Arcor London incentive trip: Momentos Magicos Dates: 6 August - 13 August, 2012 DMC: Brook Green UK The top distributors of Argentine confectionary company Arcor were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime seven-night incentive trip to the Olympic host city of London in August 2012. The trip, for 44 of Arcor’s top sales people, was organised by Argentine agency AV Business & Communication, in partnership with London & Partners, and leading destination management company Brook Green UK, who handled the activities on the ground. The distributors stayed at the four-star London Hilton Metropole, one of Europe’s largest hotel and conference centres, ideally located close to one of the two Westfield shopping centres found in the capital, as well as the theatres and attractions of London’s West End. The aim of the incentive programme was to reward Arcor’s top performing sales people by involving them in London’s summer of Olympic sport. The memories created by experiencing London’s unique cityscape during this historical period would motivate the distributors for many years to come. On the first day, the group headed to Wembley National Stadium to cheer on the sides competing in the men’s Olympic football semifinals. They then dined in one of the traditional English Gastropubs located close to the hotel. The next day, the group were given 12 private capsules on the EDF Energy London Eye, the tallest observation wheel in Europe. After enjoying the spectacular views along the River Thames, the group was whisked off to the North Greenwich Arena (The O2) to watch the quarterfinals of the men’s basketball. After two days of Olympic action, the third day was a chance for the group to spend the morning visiting iconic London landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London, home to the Crown Jewels. In the afternoon, the group shopped at leisure around the world famous stores of Oxford Street, Regent Street and New Bond Street. On day four, the group visited the Queen’s royal residency, Windsor Castle before being transferred back to the North Greenwich Arena for the men’s basketball semifinals. The next afternoon, the group headed for the Olympic Park to soak up the atmosphere and witness an evening of exciting athletics and the roar of the Olympic Stadium. The group’s final day in the capital began with a stadium tour of Chelsea Football Club, followed by more exciting sporting action at the Olympic park. The final evening was spent on board the Edwardian, one of a number of Thames Luxury Charter vessels for a dinner cruise along the London’s famous river. Results Alejandro Verzoub, President of AV Business & Communication says: “London & Partners managed this trip brilliantly in a crowded Olympic period. Our hotel and its service were very professional and its location was ideal for travelling to and from the Olympic venues. “ The most memorable part of the programme was our last day watching the Olympic action and the farewell dinner onboard the Edwardian. As we cruised along the Thames, all the iconic buildings were lit up, which proved a wonderful sight. “ We always recommend London to our clients because it is a truly magnificent city with a lot of cultural, entertaining and unique activities on offer to incentive groups. “ We are always confident of working in London as London & Partners have helped us in the past to bring south American clients to the UK capital before major European meetings shows such as EIBTM. They have always helped us to secure important relationships with venues and hoteliers and vital information whenever it has been required so choosing London as an incentive destination is easy for us. “ I would highly recommend the professional services of Chris Lynn and his London & Partners team in the US, as well as Barbara Jamison and the rest of the team in the UK.”
